A Colorful Life by Louise Sandhaus is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late March.

The biography of Gere Kavanaugh (who had worked with General Motors (GM) in Detroit, then retail shops, then her own self-named design house) with insight as ‘anecdotes’ from her friends and design cohorts. It's studded with personal photos and textile prints - she was really fond of drawing trees with upward, two-pronged branches, creating dazzling home interiors, colorful open-plan shopping malls with lots of flower shapes, particularly daisies and poppies, bulbous hourglass lampshades, boxy chairs, and condensing & presenting a wall or shelf of collected items.

This book takes me back, a child born in the 50s and growing up in the 60s, these are the colour that inspired my day to day. It all seems to be coming back, as all good things do - maybe a little different - but still vibrant and colourful.
Just loved this book, and very interesting to read about Gere Kavanaugh journey into live. I love her designs and really find inspiration from her stylistic designs which would have been a real cry from what came before.

Attractive ~ Enjoyable ~ Escapist

tl;dr: Design is everywhere. Why not make it colorful?

Gere Kavanaugh was so exceptional, only to make it worse that she isn't a household name. This book shares her thoughts about design, as well as the thoughts of peers and clients. Kavanaugh knew lots of big names: Gehry, Eames, Kent, and lovers of those designers should pick up this book. But, anyone who loves beautiful surrounds should find this book. Her big colors and explorations of nature are so au current. Even if you choose to ignore the well-done text, the images alone are worth exploring. Overall, wonderful look at an important designer whose ideas and works should be better known, as they are brilliant.

Thanks to NetGalley and Princeton Architectural Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
