Usually the first book in a series starts the story of the main characters life so that the following books add to the story and the character matures. This series is a little different. This is the second book in this series. The back story of the main character sort of "jumps" around, not following and line of progression. It's not bad, just a little harder to follow. The "bad guy" or bad girl in this case, in this book is the same one as in the first book. As a criminal, she's pretty scary. There's many pieces in each character's back story that cross the other's, leaving the reader having to question the actions of all involved. But, as always, love and justice will triumph, it's just a complex joy ride to get there.

My Review:

The story is the second in a series and can be read as a stand-alone. It is set in Canada and it is very well illustrated. The characters are well done and the overall story has intrigue, a bit of quirkiness, and just enough adventure to keep you interested until the very end.

This book was provided for free in exchange for my honest opinion. And, I can tell you I highly recommend this book, it is definitely a must read.

An escapee that had law enforcers doing jeopardy hoops, and its a female, what would be the odds of that, Jackie had the hound running with his tail between his legs, and the mob taking cover behind trees while the law enforcers did the cleanup job what a joke. Rebecca had her justice and closure for the death of her grandfather but it wasn’t what she had expected as for that of her mother some secrets are better left just as they are secrets. An interesting and entertaining read.

This was a fantastic book. Well done! I have many great things to say about it. The storyline was excellent as well. The pacing was well-done, and it was very clearly that the plot had been meticulously thought out. The story keeps moving at a fast pace, which is what genre fiction should do.. All of this added up to make a well-told tale.

I like quirky characters and plots, but even though I like Hound and Rebecca, the main protagonists in this crime based mystery thriller, and the plot is complex, I couldn’t get into the story.

Set in Canada, the story is full of local dialect and expressions, but it is the writing style rather than the content that fails to resonate. There seems to be a narrator present, telling the story rather than letting the reader learns what’s happening through the main protagonist’s thoughts and experiences.

Despite the action-packed storyline, and the unreliability of the main protagonist, there is something missing for me and the story doesn’t realise its initial potential.

I received a copy of this book from Joffe Books via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

There is a lot to follow in this one and if you haven't read the first one you will have trouble following this story. The characters are interesting. The setting is well written. The plot is complex. The writing style isn't my favorite. Overall it's a good read. You want to know how it's going to end for Rebecca.

This is book 2 to feature Detective Rebecca Bradley of Ontario Police but can be read as a stand alone, although it might be best to read the first book for background detail. Jackie Caldwell has escaped from prison and is hell bent on revenge and killing Rebecca. There are two plots, one is the hunt for Jackie and the other is the hunt for the killer of Rebecca's mother. The action speeds nicely and there are some wonderful descriptions of the Canadian scenery which would make the reader want to visit. A good story. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC. Hound is the second in the series, can be read as a standalone, but some may want to read the first one. Unusual characters, but a interesting plot.

This is the second book in the Rebecca Bradley series, but can be read as a stand alone book.

The book starts off with an extract from Rebecca’s diary 3 years previous explaining how the hurt from her mother’s unsolved murder still haunts her and how she has told her father she is going to solve it. We then jump to the present where Rebecca is still trying to work out who committed the murder.

The book is set in the wilderness of Canada, which makes a nice change from the UK and America, and also makes the location so expansive as there are so many open spaces and places for someone to hide.

This book centres around a woman called Jackie, who is out for revenge against Rebecca as Rebecca’s Grandfather scammed Jackie’s family and has escaped from prison to get her revenge.

This is where Hound comes into play, he is a giant of a man who loves Rebecca and would do anything in his power to protect her. He is soon on the trail of Jackie as he tries to get to her before she gets to Rebecca.

Overall this is an action packed book, which I loved as it was so fast paced the pages flew by.

In book one, Her Dark Path, Detective Rebecca Bradley was instrumental in the arrest of killer Jackie Caldwell for the murder of Abigail McBride (amongst other killings). Abigail's husband Kingsley was Jackie's lover, even though he ratted on Jackie to save himself, and he was betrayed to the police by Rebecca's wealthy father George. Jackie's father was bankrupted in a gold mining scam run by Rebecca's grandfather Stephen, so there are many reasons why Jackie harbours a burning hatred for Rebecca and her family. So lots of history there. Rebecca was helped by a giant of a young man called Hound who adores Rebecca therefore Jackie is also after his blood. Literally it seems, as she murders a prison guard on a break out and heads north to her home town of Conroy at the start of this book. The police need her back alive in order to testify against Kingsley over money laundering charges and in the disappearance of his courier Freddie Stafford, together with the couple of previous deaths of a mayor and a syndicate gangster. They are also more than a little concerned she will kill Kingsley. Rebecca herself is still intent on investigating the death's of her mother and grandfather, events which her father refuses to speak to her about.
There is much action throughout the book as the chase moves up through Conroy and into the eastern Georgian bay forest of Canada. Hound will still do anything for Rebecca and is intent on bringing Jackie down himself, although he does find himself with the surprising help of Matthew, another tracker who lives mainly off the land and another great partnership is formed. This book gives Hound as much of the storyline as Rebecca, him tracking Jackie to protect the woman he loves while she endeavours to solve the murders of her mother and grandfather. The characters are well described and easy to get to know. Some are very likable and some come across as the odious hateful personalities they are meant to be, but all are unique in their own way. The settings are remote and wild, and lend themselves to the chase and hideouts well.
Although this is a great story on its own, I would definitely recommend reading book number one first, as I had a little trouble keeping track of all the history and had to flip back a few times. Nevertheless it is a thrilling read with a most satisfying ending, and I hope there will be a book three.

Ken Ogilvie sets this series in Canada, and features Detective Rebecca Bradley of Ontario's Criminal Investigative Branch. Rebecca Bradley has been left traumatised by the murder of her mother when she was 8 years old, a killing that has remained unsolved. With the help of a huge young man, Hound, Rebecca helped to put a serial killer, Jackie Caldwell behind bars. To her horror, after killing a prison guard, Jackie has escaped, heading towards the town of Conroy and choosing to hide out in the forest to evade the frantic police hunt for her. Consumed by hatred towards Rebecca, Jackie seeks revenge for the financial downfall of her family in the past. Rebecca's conman of a grandfather had conned Jackie's family through a gold mining scam. Hound is determined to protect Rebecca come what may as he chases down Jackie by himself. This is an okay read but it does not really come together as a cohesive novel. A mildly engaging book which could have been much more tightly plotted.

HOUND by KEN OGILIVIE. Second in a series featuring Rebecca Bradley. Felt lost in places with the references to the previous book. An unique novel, well written and interesting if somewhat odd characters.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

Detective Bradley is horrified to hear that a woman she helped put in prison has escaped. Jackie Caldwell murdered a prison guard and escaped to a forest. The most important targets she has is Rebecca, her friend Hound, and her lover of many years.

It becomes a cat and mouse chase .. .Caldwell is extremely smart and very good with a gun. She has no problem shooting people who have done wrong by her.

Although Hound made an appearance in the first book of this series, HER DARK PATH, his appearance in this book is much expanded and the reader learns much more about this giant of a man who is in love with Rebecca and will do anything to protect her. On his own, he's tracking Jackie through the forest,

Rebecca has been looking for her mother's murderer for years ... she now moves a little closer is learning who killed her. She works closely with her colleagues and supervisor.. one of them knows more than she does.

This is a well written crime fiction ... full of non-stop action .. and finely drawn characters. I look forward to the next adventure for Rebecca and Hound.

Many thanks to the author / Joffee Books / Netgalley / Books n All Promotions for the advanced digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is book 2 in the Rebecca Bradley series but it works perfectly as stand alone. Book 1 focussed on Rebecca whereas Hound is more to the forefront in this one.

Rebecca is still trying to find out what happened to her mother and her father is refusing to share what he knows. Her relationship with her father has deteriorated to the level that they no longer communicate.

Hound is a massive beast of a man but one we would all like as our protector and he is in love with Rebecca so is determined to keep her safe.

The setting is the wilderness of Canada with dense forest and remote villages. Plenty of places to hide. Enter Matthew, a unique character who, for the majority of his life, lives off the land. His tracking skills are unbeatable and they play a big part in this book.

It is a steadily moving story with a look back to the past via Rebecca's diary as she continues her quest the past and present work in tandem which makes for interesting reading.

I found it a little complicated in places and had to backtrack to work out where I was on occasions but it is, nevertheless, a gripping story and I am looking forward to book 3.

Rebecca Bradley #2

Rebecca Bradley put serial killer Jackie Cladwell in prison. She had the assistance of Hound, a giant young man who's in love with Rebecca. But Jackie has murdered a prison officer and escaped. She heads north to her hometown of Conroy, where she hides in the forest to evade a massive police search. She is burning with hatred forRebecca, and wants revenge for the financial ruin of her family twenty years ago by a gold mining scam by Rebecca's villainous grandfather.

This is an action packed, fast paced read with a duel plot line: the hunt for Jackie who had escaped from prison and the hunt for Rebecca's mothers killer who was killed sixteen years ago. I liked Hound, a man who will do anything to protect the woman that he loves. You must read Her Dark Path, the first book in this series before this one as it contains a lot of background information.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author Ken Ogilivie for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of Hound, the second novel to feature DC Rebecca Bradley of the Ontario Provincial Police and her friend, the eponymous Hound.

When Jackie Caldwell escapes from prison she has one thing on her mind, revenge on Rebecca for the sins of her grandfather who conned Jackie’s family out of their fortune and for putting her in prison. Hound, who helped put her away, is also in her sights.

I enjoyed Hound which is an action packed read with two plot lines. The first is the physical hunt for Jackie and the second is Rebecca’s hunt for her mother, Sarah’s murderer, who was killed 16 years previously. It should be noted that this novel heavily references its predecessor, Her Dark Path, so I would recommend not only reading the novels in order but reading them close together. I have read Her Dark Path but it was a while ago and the required detail didn’t stick so I often felt a bit lost in this one. The hunt for Sarah’s killer is more self contained and doesn’t require previous knowledge.

This is an unusual novel. It has all the necessary action scenes, twists and oddball characters but it doesn’t quite ring true. The dialogue is clunky at times and the characters’ changes of heart seem odd and designed more as plot devices than believability. It is, on the other hand, a warm novel as Rebecca has gathered a good group of close friends around her and their willingness to support her allied with the optimistic ending give it a feel good factor.

Hound is a solid read.

An interesting book. The second part of two linked books led by DC Rebecca Bradley and Hound - a giant of a man - in Canada. In the first of the books they caught a murderer Jackie Caldwell, at great physical cost to themselves and friends. In this book Jackie has broken free from prison and is coming after them. Interwoven with this is other happenings in their area - Rebecca is trying to solve her mother's murder - which her father won't help her with; and Hound is trying to decide what to do about his father who sent him to Canada when he was 10 and apart from giving him unlimited finance hasn't been in touch since.

A busy, exciting read.

Detective Rebecca Bradley has finally made it to the Criminal Investigative Branch in Ontario. She closed a recent homicide and assisted with the capture and incarceration of Jackie Caldwell, a serial killer. She is feeling good about her career until she learns that Jackie has escaped. Rebecca knows that she is Jackie’s next target. Jackie has a past grudge against Rebecca’s family, that has nothing to do with Rebecca, but that will not stop Jackie from seeking revenge. It is hoped that Jackie is heading for their small town where Rebecca can enlist the help of Hound, a giant young man who is in love with Rebecca. Hound also assisted in the original capture of Jackie and he will be intent on capturing her again and keeping Rebecca safe. Will Jackie hunt down her former lover who also testified against her? As the body count adds up, can Rebecca and Hound stop Jackie before she kills again…and before she succeeds in killing Rebecca? I had not read the first book in this series, but there was enough back story that I never felt confused. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review.
