I am not sure why but I loved this book. I ended up downloading the 2nd one also because I had to know what happened. Tank is a retired cop after some bad things go down but he is part of the "Tin Badges" and still helps out and works on the edges of the law. When is brother and sister-in-law die he is now looking at taking in his nephew who is a teenager. He hasn't spoken to his brother in years and has no relationship with his nephew. I loved the characters and everything about this book!

Tank Rizzo is a former cop who works with a team to solve cold cases. He is given one that's not that "cold", but might lead him to a dirty cop. In the meantime, his brother has died and Tank's teen nephew is coming to live with him. And his nephew thinks his parents were murdered.

After a strong start, I felt the story just fell flat. There were moments of brilliance, and several pieces were intriguing. I loved the part about the nephew working with an online group to "solve" cold cases. The relationship between Tank and an ex-gangster had potential. I liked the idea of ex-cops (one in a wheelchair) working with ex-gangsters and the others on the team and their various skills added interest. I can't really define why I didn't really connect with this story. It's not a bad story, just not nearly as captivating as I hoped. All the pieces fell into place and there was plenty of action. Fans of police/crime fiction will likely enjoy it, but IMHO there are so many more better ones.

What an electrifying ride. This book had me from the beginning. Such a well written book with great characters and enough twists and turns to keep me hooked until the very end. I want more!!

Highly recommend. A definite WINNER.

It was a good book, very entertaining. I liked the characters the setting and the plot. It was a slow and steady pace and some unbelievable cop procedure but still entertaining.

They call them "tin badges" -- cops who have left the department but who are sometimes called upon by the NYPD to act outside the usual parameters. To work in the grey areas.

Tank Rizzo is a tin badge, and he sure has some oddball friends. Really, they are each a sort of savant in their particular/ peculiar areas of interest. And then there is his former partner, Pearl. Pearl runs and Italian restaurant, and has a lot of friends along the lines of Family.... mob-style. And these are the people Tank turns to when there's a case to be handled.

In the midst of the latest case, Tank finds out his brother and SIL have died in an accident, leaving him to take care of their son, Chris. Tank know's he's not a good candidate for ts role, but he knows Chris needs him. Can he keep Chris safe? Will he let Chris help when he shows off skills that might make a real difference in taking down a kingpin called Gonzo?

I admit, I was mentally preparing to sigh and form an opinion about the blurb I read, but my eyes got ahead of me. They just read what was on the page. The writing pulled me in and did not let me form a single sentence of opinion until the book was well and truly played out. I loved every second of it. That almost sigh never happened. I can unreservedly recommend this as a really awesome read. Tin Badges by Lorenzo Carcaterra earned it. Oh and,... more please!

Fans of tv crimes shows will enjoy this book and what appears to be the start of a series. The chapters are short but detailed, the characters engaging and memorable. The world is full of promise that blends crime, family, history and a dash of romance.

The premise of tin badges was interesting and the crew that was put together fascinating. The story had some good twists that were instrumental in creating the events for this case and the cliffhanger was quite intriguing as it answered one question but created a slew of new ones!

Thanks for the chance to read this book and share my opinions!

The book opens with the two partners doing their job while being detectives, and how Pear his best friend ends up in a wheelchair. Now many years later retired Tank is still given jobs by the chief. With his crew or the people that have been in his life, it seems forever, from Carmine who owns the restaurant across the street who is also an ex-mob boss. Connie Carmines daughter also works at the restaurant and is the love interest of Tank’s. to his computer guy Joey. He begins his case about a decomposed body of a teenage girl along the Hudson Park Way.
Before he can even start to get involved with all of that his brother and his wife die in a car accident leaving a teenage boy who has never met his uncle and now is supposed to live with him. Or as Tank says you can go into the system until you eighteen. Really a good bonding tool is Tank’s communication skills.
Once you get going into the story it is a quick read with twists and turns. With all of the different characters adding something to the flow of the story. I found that it was really all of these characters that for me made the book. Overall a good book.

Tin Badges by Lorenzo Carcaterra is a well written adventure story featuring police and expolice fighting killer and drug sellers. Some of the book is cetainly violent but there is a lot of love inthe book as well. The story takes plaace in NYC where two police fficers ben their life long carrer Jack Rizzo and his partner Pearl. Thye trained and worked . togeter but were both hurt in a accident. Pearl was confined to a wheelchair and Jack left the department. He continues to do extra work for the Chief of Police.. Most of the book is about his efforts to stop a serriers drug organization. He is a dangerous rough an when stopping cime. However what makes this book so interesting and different is Jakc's personality. HI brother and sisterin law die right in the beginning of the book. Theyhave a son who Jack has never met but hus brother has made him the sons guardian. This is a huge challenge for both Jack and the boy. Jack is also very good friends with an old gang leader and his daughter. In fact he is in love with the daughter. Its the different sides of Jaack's personality that make the book unique and more interesting thanany common thriller.

Carcaterra's novel "Tin Badges" appears to be the start of an exciting new series. Recommended for fans of detective series, especially those involving the NYPD.

It's always great to find a new action thriller author. My dad and I enjoyed this start to a new series and are looking forward to the next installment. Great action and character and relationship development between the uncle and nephew thrown together.

Thanks to NetGalley, Ballantine , and the author Lorenzo Carcaterra for a digital review copy. This book was published August 27th, 2019.

Tin badges are retired cops who still work occasional cases when the police department needs some extra help. In this book, Tank Rizzo is the tin badge who is tasked with investigating an old assault case. His mission expands into the takedown of a drug kingpin and he is assisted by an unofficial crew of “experts”. If this sounds familiar, it’s because you have probably seen a similar plot on half a dozen TV shows. The book is full of clichéd situations, characters and dialogue. The ending of the book suggests that the story is to be continued in another book. While this one held my interest, I’m not sure that I would read the next book. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

Embarrassingly enough, I will admit that I have not read any of the previous novels by Lorenzo Carcaterra. I have very clearly been missing out. Tin Badges is his 10th novel. I am uncertain if the characters have made prior appearances in other stories, but this definitely has a vibe of being an ongoing storyline. This is a cop story with a lot of heart. Tank and his best friend Pearl took early retirement after a gunfight with neighborhood drug dealers leaves Tank wounded and Pearl paralyzed. Not content to live retired from the job, Tank and his civilian team stay busy taking cold cases that have failed to be solved. The latest case, a violent break in/ assault that left two women physically and emotionally damaged, reeks of something more than an innocent break in. Just as Tank starts to dive into his new case, word comes through that his brother and his wife have died in a car crash, leaving their 15 year old son without a guardian. Despite a rift between Tank and his deceased brother, Tank offers to take Chris to live with him. While they bump heads at first, it becomes apparent that Chris has some tech savvy that may come in handy in Tank’s new case. A case that is evolving into a complicated mess involving a high level drug dealer moving drugs across the city. It isn’t long before the drug dealer takes notice of Tank and his team, and threats are exchanged. After a vicious physical assault leaves a close friend in the hospital, Tank is unable to leave such an aggressive dealer on the streets. He concocts an elaborate plan to take the dealer out or die trying. With the help of all of his friends, Tank moves forward to close the books on one of the most dangerous cases he has taken. A perfect blend of thrills and heart, you wont be disappointed. Thank you to Netgalley for the early copy. Review is posted to Goodreads, LibraryThing, and Amazon.

Lorenzo Carcaterra can weave a story so well but the true mastery is how he depicts people and circumstances. Such a great story, thrill ride.

Story is about an ex police officer and his merry band of civilians . Along with his ex partner they help to solve cases that have gone cold or have no more leads.
Along the way he acquires his nephew as a ward due to the death of the child's parents.
There are a number of characters, some good, some not so much. A decent read even though it moves quickly and in places does not really fully flesh out the possible story..
I would read more of this author

Gosh, I enjoyed this book. I'm a reader who loves my favorite authors and keeps reading their books but get happy whenever I "discover" someone "new".
I didn't know Lorenzo Carcaterra prior to this book, but I certainly will be checking out his other books after reading this one.
In the story, we meet the NYPD detectives Tank and Pearl who get themselves badly hurt at the very beginning of the book and they get themselves involuntarily retired for health reasons, and this obviously changes their lives dramatically. They are being thrown the occasional cold case from the police chief, but the case that we are following in this book escalates well beyond what the initial case appeared to be.
I don't know if the premise and the action in the book are realistic but I really enjoyed the storytelling, the characters, and the excitement. The ending wasn't too my 100% liking, but I'm not the author or maybe even his typical reader. Nevertheless, I read this book in one sitting (on a transatlantic flight) and never felt the urge to put it down.

What a page turner!
What a roller coaster of a story!
I would definitely recommend Tin Badge to anyone that enjoys crime novels.
Tank and his crew bring the story to life along with many other characters. The characters were engaging, the pacing is fast, full of action.
I could not stop reading it and I guarantee you will not be able to put it down once you start reading Tin Badge.
I am hoping for a book 2!
This is my first book by Lorenzo Carcaterra but definitely not my last!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read and give my honest review of Tin Badge.

3 Stars.

This was one wild, heart stopping ride with great characters.

Tank Rizzo and his partner Frank “Pearl” Monroe, who are retired NYPD cops had me on the edge of my seat. Called to look into an open rape/assault case by the department, Tank gets more than he bargained for. On the home front, his young nephew Chris winds up on his doorstep when his brother and sister-in-law get killed. Turns out the kid has some mad computer skills and can help him solve a few of his cases. Who’d a thunk?

Tank and his gang were one heck of a crime fighting team who I’d want on my side any day of the week. “Tin Badges” was one mystery / suspense that kept my pulse high but was well worth it. This was my second novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra, the first being “Sleepers.” I’m glad to have rediscovered him and hope to read more of his work in the future!

Thanks to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and Lorenzo Carcaterra for the arc.

Tin Badges: 'Retired cops who get handed cases when the PD is on overload.'

Tank Rizzo and his NYPD partner Frank 'Pearl' Monroe retired after both were injured during a drug-related shoot-out. Two years later, they are occasionally called upon to work as 'tin badges' to look into open cases that have been put on the back burner by the department.

In this latest instance, they are asked to look into the rape and severe beating of two working girls in their apartment during a robbery. What Tank and Pearl learn leads to a surprising development and involvement in a much more complicated situation than was first thought. Tank needs to call on all his friends for their expertise and various crime-fighting skills--and they are a real motley crew, to be sure! Oh! Did I mention that Pearl is in a wheel chair and living in a nursing home? He insists on being included by phone.

In the midst of this, Tank learns that his estranged brother and wife have been killed in a car accident, leaving his fifteen-year-old nephew Chris without a home. The kid seems to have two choices: either going into the foster care system or living with his uncle, a total stranger. Overwhelmed with grief, neither seems a good option. And what exactly was the problem between Tank and his brother Jack that caused their split? Tank just won't talk about it.

Among Tank's close friends are the former mobster Carmine and his daughter Connie, who run a wonderful Italian restaurant called Tramonti's. She and Tank have been in love most of their lives, although they don't seem to want to admit that, and she encourages Tank to step up to be a father figure for Chris. The going is rocky at first but the gap is somewhat bridged by Chris' interest in solving cold crime cases. He impresses Tank's friends with his considerable computer skills that might be of help with this current case. Or would that be unethical, putting the kid in harm's way?

Short chapters and interesting twists and turns move this thriller along quickly. Having big hearts make Tank and his friends very likable. I suppose you could knock the story down a bit because of lack of believability in parts, but what the heck, it's a fun, quick read nevertheless. I'd be happy to read more in this series if the author chooses to continue it and I'll plan to read his past books as well. I am a newbie to his writing and a new fan.

I received an arc of this new thriller from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I apologize for not getting it read in a more timely manner but better late than never, eh? Thanks for the opportunity!
