Love this book. I love science and history, so the only thing that would have made me not like the book was how it was written. This author is delightful. His tone, attitude and moments of snark make this a totally fun read.

It is chock a block full of facts, biology, history, public health, medical history, insect history and more, The author packages facts with explanation, his choice of vocabulary is excellent. I love his attitude as well, a combination of intelligence, awe and humor.

It is so easy to overlook the impact of such a tiny, yet relentlessly awful creature on world history, Reading this book will change your understanding and appreciation of that horrible yet inevitable little insect.

Recommend enthusiastically!

This book was absolutely splendid. I received it yesterday(!) and couldn't put it down. That hasn't happened to me in AGES. Winegard has made an informative, readable study of the mosquito that also provides a compelling new lens into various stages of history. I was initially drawn to this book because I am researching yellow fever in early America, but I think this is one a book that pretty much anybody with an interest in health and history would enjoy. One thing that did bother me ever-so-slightly was the gendered anthropomorphization of mosquitos as "she," which I understand from a practical standpoint but as a woman found a little bit irksome. That wasn't a dealbreaker, though. I loved it.

Not my typical read, but very interesting. I like how it incorporated facts but in a fun way. I was worried it would read more like a textbook, but that really isn't how it came off. I have a ton of mosquito fun facts to now frown my family and friends with every time they get bitten by one of those bloodsuckers!

What a fascinating book this was!! I kept reading/reciting the facts aloud to whomever was in the room or nearby when I read - there are so many intriguing and surprising things to learn here, that I felt compelled to share them. It took me a while to read - it's long and there's a LOT of information here, but it is packaged very well, although I did occasionally find that I needed to take a short break for something a little less death-and-disease focused (it is, after all, summer and I couldn't make myself or my family too crazy worrying about mosquitoes to enjoy the day!)... But the writing was great - engaging and entertaining while remaining true to the fact-sharing non-fiction nature of its core.
