I love books with lots of emails and text messages, so Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway sounded right up my alley. Told through text messages, emails and journal entries it was a fast-paced chick-lit rom-com that focused mostly on the mother/daughter relationship.

Crystal’s mother, Margot, is pretty overbearing, even inviting herself along on a romantic holiday with Crystal and her boyfriend. This caused a kind of break-up with Crystal and her boyfriend, as well as her losing her job, requiring her to move in with mom. Crystal is a bit of a doormat and her mom is a bit crazy, but not as terrible as it seemed at the beginning. In fact, it’s Crystal who ended up being kind of a bitch and not appreciating that her mom was giving up her independence to take care of her grown daughter.

Some parts of Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend were fun and entertaining, but the journal entries got a bit weird and boring, and honestly, not much happened. Crystal tried to write a crappy book and some dino porn, her mom made marshmallows at the Farmer’s Market and was always failing in competition with a neighbor. This was supposed to be about a robot boyfriend, but he didn’t show up until at least 50% into the book, and it wasn’t really about him, as pitiful as he was, it was more about the mom/daughter relationship.

Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway was certainly different, but the main characters were all a little bit pathetic. I really enjoyed it at first, then it just lost steam for me as I began to feel sorry for all of them. In the end, it was an OK read.

Likes:
•A quick and unique read.
•I love books told via text and email.
•The sisters’ relationship.
•Cute cover.

Dislikes:
•The characters were all kind of pitiful after a while.
•I got a little bored at times.
•The robot part didn’t happen till after 50%, and that was just kind of mean to trick their mom.
•Very focused on appearances.
•The mom seemed overbearing at first but she was a nice lady and didn’t deserve to be set up for heartbreak.
•Crystal was a doormat.

The Down & Dirty:
I really wanted to love Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway. I love books told via text, but this one, after an encouraging start, ended up falling a bit flat for me. I enjoyed the sister relationships and I liked all the texting, but the characters were all kind of sad, and I didn’t root for anyone or want to know more about them. It was a fast-paced, different read that I didn’t really think of stopping, and it was mildly entertaining at times.

This was a super fun and cute lighthearted read! I passed it along to my mom and she also really enjoyed it. I think this would be a great palette cleanser if you need a break from darker reading. I definitely would recommend this to others!

I love epistolary formatted books. Love them. At the beginning though I didn’t feel this book but as I got to advance to the chapters the book started getting funnier and ridiculous—in a good way—and had me rooting for the protagonist in her antics. This book was fun and sweet and enjoyable. Truly liked it.

Special thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for this review copy.

A hilarious read on the relationship between mothers and daughters. The mother has caused all her daughter’s problems, or so the daughter thinks, but when she ends up having to move back in with Mum and her partying friends, life becomes even funnier as daughter seeks revenge! I had a job to put this book down as it was so real and yet so funny

So, I'm a sucker for books with chat, emails, letters as the format instead of the typical text..Since this falls into the category, I was drawn to it immediately, I don't think I have read a quirkier book in my life (Dinosaur erotica?????!!!???) but I did laugh out loud quite a few times. Some parts were a little snoozy (The Rapunzel book) but I thought it had a lot of love, laughs and an extremely original plot....

After her mother hijacks Crystal and her partner's holidays to Hawaii, he decides he needs to take a break. Then Crystal looses her job and, as a result, her home as well, so she decides to move with her mother and focus on finishing her Rapunzel based novel. Is this going to work out? As her mother needs a lot of attention and is very interested in her daughter's life, Crystal decides Margot simply needs a distraction - she signs her mother up as a test person for a "Smart Companion" robot trial. Can you fall in love with a robot?

This book is told fully through messages, emails, letters and journal entries so don't expect the characters to be deeply fleshed out, and as much as the idea of telling this story this way was really good and different, and made the book a quick read, I think I missed depth in it. Sure, under the surface of fun and light - heartedness it deals with oh so complicated and complex issue of mother - daughter relationship but it never digs deeply into it. Crystal seems to be trying to set some limits but it doesn't work, and I think that 4 - hours phone calls daily would also set me on a lonely journey, just like David did.

Actually, after finishing this book, I felt confused, and wasn't sure what to think. It was a different read, that's for sure. I think I'd like the android - boyfriend to appear earlier on the pages, as it happen somewhere in the middle of the story, but even when he entered the scenes, well, nothing significant has happened. The book had some funny moments but overall, I found it a little too flat and underdeveloped in all aspects. The main characters, Crystal and Margot, grew and mature in this story, though I'm not sure if they really managed to solve their problematic relationship. But they were trying hard to give each other so much needed space in those difficult times. Altogether, it was a light, quick and entertaining read.

I found this book so funny, I didn’t want it to end. It read like your funny best mate telling you their life story. Brilliant, hilarious, and un-put-downable. Fantastic light read.

A charming and quirky quick read, strung together with a mix of text messages, emails, diary entries and letters.

Sadly for me lacked the connection and attention that the big rom-coms effortlessly achieve.

A very light-hearted novel about two sisters, their mother and their grandmother. The mother seems to interfere in every aspect of the girls' lives. Crystal works for a tech company that is designing robots that can act and think like humans.Lisa, trying to keep her mother occupied applies for one to test-drive, and her mother thinks she has found a new bo.yfriend. Meanwhile Lisa is trying to write a novel, an adaptation of Rapunzel, but it is not really working.
However, when her sister finds an erotic story-writing competition, she suggests that Lisa enter her "Velocirapture" story. Her mother has given up her job as a dental hygenist, after the dentist wanted to reduce her hours by 40%. She decides to try and make some artisanal marshmallows to sell at the local Farmers' Market.
In trying to do her own website she comes across a man who she dated at school. He is a professional photographer.
All in all this is a frothy story, composed of emails, diary entries, and narrative. The characters are amusing, if a little stilted, and the plot is rather far-fetched, but it does make you smile. Many thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book.

I received this book from net galley in return for an honest review. It is difficult to write such a review when for the most part I hated the book. It was vacuous and lacking in real narrative. Its saving grace was perhaps that it didn't take much reading many pages having fewer than 20 words to them. I am afraid this just wasn't my thing

Thank you to Galbadia Press for sending me a review copy of Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway. It’s a quick, fun summer read with a thoroughly modern twist on ‘the perfect boyfriend’. Crystal is feeling a bit lost, having broken up with her boyfriend and failing to make it as a writer in LA. She moves back in with her mother and that’s when things really start to fall apart (but also get really, really funny).

Anyone with a complicated relationship with their mother will no doubt find themselves laughing and cringing their way through.

The book is written via a series of short ‘chapters’ which are made up of direct message conversations, emails, postcards, journal entries and portions of a novel Crystal is writing. At first I found the format a little choppy and disruptive, but by the end I actually enjoyed the short sections, written in different perspectives, and it made the book easy to pick up and read a few pages here and there without having to stop in the middle of a chapter.

All in all, a really fun summer read!

Really well written in a different style of messages between the characters lots of laugh out loud moments. Everything goes wrong for Crystal and she has to move back in with her domineering mother. I'm sure every reader will identify with the mother/daughter relationship.

Kudos to Crystal Hemingway on her break through first novel. I was hesitant at first by the texting style and character journal but found it easier to read after a few chapters. Totally cute storyline. Sorry I cannot believe it is based on a true life experience but a very enjoyable book. Looking for the next book by her.

This is a perfect fun summer read. The android aspect of the book is amazing, it manages the perfect balance between crazy sci fi and actually... maybe not that far off. It's so easy to suspend your disbelief and be sucked right into the thick of it. Not only is the whole situation laugh out loud funny but the book also has so much heart in the characters.

This book was just okay for me. Maybe closer to a 2.5 than a 2, but I didn't really get drawn into it or care too much about what was happening. It's a cute, light read. Easy to blow through, but nothing really stood out to me and it's mostly forgettable. My favorite part was the Author's Note in the beginning so I had a lot of hope for liking it. At least that makes me want to check out other things she has written because I think there is promise there! This just didn't do it for me. Maybe I just didn't read it at the right time to enjoy it as much as I could. I'm not sure!

Hilarious - Must Read!
I chose this book on a whim. I began reading it and was not sure if I would like it. I was completely sold on it about 5 minutes into reading it. The story is funny and fresh. The family is a bit dysfunctional, yet loving. Different family members go through some harsh situations that the love of the family helps them get through it. Some parts of the book will have you shaking your head in disbelief. There are parts that made me laugh out loud and I smiled through the entire book. This is a good book to read when you are just bored with your normal choices. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.

A cute debut novel by Crystal Hemmingway.

What we have here is a collection of texts, messages, emails ad journal entries, following the story of Crystal and her relationships with her mum, boyfriend and sister. Added to the mix is the discovery of a possible perfect boyfriend for her mother - who happens to be an android.

This was a lighthearted read which I was able to get into straight away and finish relatively quickly.

Though the story may not be plausible (though, who knows in the future?) it was well written, engaged me and I enjoyed slipping into Boople world!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Galbadia Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
