When I started reading the book, I was not sure how it will turn out. But I am so happy that I continued with the book. This is a hilarious read. Once into the book, couldn't put it down. New concept, written as chats, blogs, journal entries, a totally new format. Absolutely loved the book. Hoping to read more from Crystal Hemmingway in future. |

Sorry - forgot to post this review, now going through reviews had written and saved, yet not posted: A little difficult to get into, but when I did, I found this an enjoyable read. A little strange to be written via emails, texts etc, so that didn't help. |
Hilarious! Any lover of Bridget Jones will enjoy Mom's Perfect Boyfriend! It had me in stitches throughout - I just couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next one by Crystal Hemmingway. |

I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy the format of the book, which was a mixture of emails, text chats and journal entries. I actually really liked it and immediately warmed to the characters. The plot was an interesting one and possibly one that could actually happen one day in the future. A nice light-hearted read and I'd definitely read more from the author. |

This was a very cute book! The characters were fun and the book was really easy to get through....definitely recommend! |
Crystal has to move back with her mother (Margot) when she loses her job and her life starts going wrong. Her mother is domineering, but that doesn't alter the fact that this is such a funny book, with lots of out loud laughing. It is written in diary form, text messages and e.mails which may not appeal to some but I didn't mind. With an android boyfriend thrown into the mix and other likeable characters, this book is a good chuckling read. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this delightful book. x |
Absolutely loved the format of this book. Very 21st century. Emails, journal entries, messages, novel excerpts make up the story of this novel. Made for a quick and cozy read. |
This book sounds amazing, but at this time it just isn’t for me. I think it will be great when I am ready to come back to it! |

Quirky, lighthearted feel good read , well written in a unique style, a bit of a slow burner to start with but well worth reading, enjoyable on the whole. |
Thanks to Net Galley for a advanced copy for an honest review. This book is very strange, it is basically written as a bunch of text messages and emails. But it shines on a very dysfunctional family and I loved Mom's thankful s at the end of her journal entries. Crystal has a boyfriend and they are going to Hawaii, guess who tags a long? Mom, then Crystal's boyfriend decides to take a "break" meanwhile Crystal's sister Lisa works for a cyborg dating app company. Crystal and Lisa chat thru messages, which are hilarious all while Crystal loses her apt, job and starts writing a book. This was a strange fun read. |
2.5 Stars I love books with lots of emails and text messages, so Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway sounded right up my alley. Told through text messages, emails and journal entries it was a fast-paced chick-lit rom-com that focused mostly on the mother/daughter relationship. Crystal’s mother, Margot, is pretty overbearing, even inviting herself along on a romantic holiday with Crystal and her boyfriend. This caused a kind of break-up with Crystal and her boyfriend, as well as her losing her job, requiring her to move in with mom. Crystal is a bit of a doormat and her mom is a bit crazy, but not as terrible as it seemed at the beginning. In fact, it’s Crystal who ended up being kind of a bitch and not appreciating that her mom was giving up her independence to take care of her grown daughter. Some parts of Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend were fun and entertaining, but the journal entries got a bit weird and boring, and honestly, not much happened. Crystal tried to write a crappy book and some dino porn, her mom made marshmallows at the Farmer’s Market and was always failing in competition with a neighbor. This was supposed to be about a robot boyfriend, but he didn’t show up until at least 50% into the book, and it wasn’t really about him, as pitiful as he was, it was more about the mom/daughter relationship. Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway was certainly different, but the main characters were all a little bit pathetic. I really enjoyed it at first, then it just lost steam for me as I began to feel sorry for all of them. In the end, it was an OK read. Likes: •A quick and unique read. •I love books told via text and email. •The sisters’ relationship. •Cute cover. Dislikes: •The characters were all kind of pitiful after a while. •I got a little bored at times. •The robot part didn’t happen till after 50%, and that was just kind of mean to trick their mom. •Very focused on appearances. •The mom seemed overbearing at first but she was a nice lady and didn’t deserve to be set up for heartbreak. •Crystal was a doormat. The Down & Dirty: I really wanted to love Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway. I love books told via text, but this one, after an encouraging start, ended up falling a bit flat for me. I enjoyed the sister relationships and I liked all the texting, but the characters were all kind of sad, and I didn’t root for anyone or want to know more about them. It was a fast-paced, different read that I didn’t really think of stopping, and it was mildly entertaining at times. Rating: 2.5 Stars |
This was a super fun and cute lighthearted read! I passed it along to my mom and she also really enjoyed it. I think this would be a great palette cleanser if you need a break from darker reading. I definitely would recommend this to others! |
I love epistolary formatted books. Love them. At the beginning though I didn’t feel this book but as I got to advance to the chapters the book started getting funnier and ridiculous—in a good way—and had me rooting for the protagonist in her antics. This book was fun and sweet and enjoyable. Truly liked it. Special thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for this review copy. |
A hilarious read on the relationship between mothers and daughters. The mother has caused all her daughter’s problems, or so the daughter thinks, but when she ends up having to move back in with Mum and her partying friends, life becomes even funnier as daughter seeks revenge! I had a job to put this book down as it was so real and yet so funny |

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Mom's Perfect Boyfriend. This was such a cute read and I think every mother/daughter would enjoy this quirky funny book. For a easy and relaxing read I hope you all enjoy this gem of a book!! |
So, I'm a sucker for books with chat, emails, letters as the format instead of the typical text..Since this falls into the category, I was drawn to it immediately, I don't think I have read a quirkier book in my life (Dinosaur erotica?????!!!???) but I did laugh out loud quite a few times. Some parts were a little snoozy (The Rapunzel book) but I thought it had a lot of love, laughs and an extremely original plot.... |
After her mother hijacks Crystal and her partner's holidays to Hawaii, he decides he needs to take a break. Then Crystal looses her job and, as a result, her home as well, so she decides to move with her mother and focus on finishing her Rapunzel based novel. Is this going to work out? As her mother needs a lot of attention and is very interested in her daughter's life, Crystal decides Margot simply needs a distraction - she signs her mother up as a test person for a "Smart Companion" robot trial. Can you fall in love with a robot? This book is told fully through messages, emails, letters and journal entries so don't expect the characters to be deeply fleshed out, and as much as the idea of telling this story this way was really good and different, and made the book a quick read, I think I missed depth in it. Sure, under the surface of fun and light - heartedness it deals with oh so complicated and complex issue of mother - daughter relationship but it never digs deeply into it. Crystal seems to be trying to set some limits but it doesn't work, and I think that 4 - hours phone calls daily would also set me on a lonely journey, just like David did. Actually, after finishing this book, I felt confused, and wasn't sure what to think. It was a different read, that's for sure. I think I'd like the android - boyfriend to appear earlier on the pages, as it happen somewhere in the middle of the story, but even when he entered the scenes, well, nothing significant has happened. The book had some funny moments but overall, I found it a little too flat and underdeveloped in all aspects. The main characters, Crystal and Margot, grew and mature in this story, though I'm not sure if they really managed to solve their problematic relationship. But they were trying hard to give each other so much needed space in those difficult times. Altogether, it was a light, quick and entertaining read. |
I found this book so funny, I didn’t want it to end. It read like your funny best mate telling you their life story. Brilliant, hilarious, and un-put-downable. Fantastic light read. |
