This was actually the first book by Leila Meacham that I've read. My library has many copies of Roses and Tumbleweeds, which were book club selections in the past, and I've always wanted to pick them up but never got around to it. But I love, love historical fiction so I knew Dragonfly was probably my best choice to read first. I loved it. I read anything on World War II that I can get my hands on, and this book didn't disappoint. I liked getting all the background stories on the characters before it really jumped into the action; made me more invested in their outcomes. Won't give away the ending, but overall a very good read. |
Dragonfly by Leila Meacham World War II Historical Thriller Fiction. The stories of five government spies who were chosen for their special abilities. This book is hard to put down from the first few pages. I lost sleep because I could not stop reading. Wonderful realistic characters with lives that reflect the era. Everyone has secrets and there are few people worthy of trust. Suspicions are caused by the smallest details for example the nuances of behavior or language. The characters live on the edge because anyone may betray you. I loved this book for its authentic historical details, constant action, light romance and wonderful characters. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I appreciate the opportunity and thank the author and publisher for allowing me to read, enjoy and review this book. 5 Stars |
Dragonfly by Leila Meacham was an amazing story about five young people living in an occupied France during WWII. Leila does an amazing job writing such an emotional and moving story line and wow those five young people were just epic. |
This book was a fascinating story of five brave Americans recruited to become spies in France during WWII. The book started out very strong. I was pulled in from the start as I got to know each character in detail before they were shipped off to France. I couldn't wait to read about their harrowing adventures into Nazi-occupied territory where they were undercover as innocent civilians collecting intel from loose-lipped Germans. The history was well-researched and I cared what happened to each character. I did feel like once I read through the initial detailed descriptions of these characters at the beginning, the story felt more rushed. A lot of the main characters' actual "spy work" had little to no detail. In fact, I felt like these were probably some of the worst spies ever because, by week two of their time in Paris, most of them had already been discovered by the Germans they were deceiving. These Germans, though, just happened to have their own agenda which saved all five of these spies from getting executed. That was just a little too contrived for my taste, and honestly, a little cheesy. Some of the major plot points that I felt should have been given a lot of focus and the ending, especially, was completely glossed over, and only minimal information was given of the characters' lives after the war. Despite these problems I had with the book, I did enjoy the story very much. I could not put it down. I had to know what happened in the end. I liked the characters and the interweaving between each character's story was well done. |

Dragonfly is a book I won't soon forget. Leila Meacham has given us a wonderful saga of five young Americans who form strong bonds while serving in Paris for the OSS. I loved this book. I have long been fascinated by the OSS, and the research Ms. Meacham has put in is readily visible in her novel. The characters are all strong and likeable and believably written. I was sad for it to end. |
I loved this book. It pulled me in from the first page. This is the story of 5 brave young people during WWII who go undercover as spies in Occupied France, the code name for their operation is Dragonfly. These 5 people are all from varied backgrounds but they all have a mission. I couldn't put this down once I started. I highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction. I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me a copy free of charge. This is my honest and unbiased opinion of it. |

This book is so good. Very moving account of 5 young Americans assigned to Nazi Paris as spies. I could not put this book down and will be added to my favorite's list of war historical fiction. I have loved this author's previous books and this one did not disappoint. |
During World War II a small group of Americans are recruited to spy on the Nazis in France. They are from disparate backgrounds, genders and beliefs, but they all form a unique bond as Dragonfly, a group determined to help turn the tide of the war. They risk everything, and some of them will pay the highest price imaginable. I think stories like these are so popular now, in these times, because we need to believe in heroes, and we would like to imagine that even we would rise to the challenge if necessary |
