Icy Roads by JL Canfield is an interesting book about an accident that brings to light horrible infidelity. Ms Canfield writes with much emotional tension and heartbreak. I really loved most of this book. I only gave it two stars because of her decision to use inappropriate, unnecessary erotic elements. It honestly was not necessary because the book really stood well on its own. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own. |
Julie Canfield excels at painting a convincing portrait that's balanced in realistic, relationships, and the ups and downs of love and forgiveness .. Icy Roads is a satisfyingly tight-woven love story with tension that deepens with every chapter.. |
I was intrigued by the description of this book and decided to give it a go. I am a Christian and a lover of fiction, but I typically don't like to read anything labeled "Christian fiction." I picked this up because the themes sounded interesting to explore and the author's previous book seemed very well-received. First of all, the writing is good for moving the story along. I appreciate when the writing moves the story instead of getting in its way because an author wants to impress the literary community with their vocabulary. This author doesn't do that, and I'm glad for it. This story flows well. I appreciate that the story is not too long, it's a quick read and easy to follow. Knowing the story is moving, and knowing that it's not hugely long, will keep a reader interested because they don't feel overwhelmed by the length and the amount of time it will take to finish. So I like that about this book as well. Some (hopefully) constructive criticism: The description of the sexual acts surprised me. Is this Christian fiction? Or is this a story with some Christian themes juxtaposed against those things in humanity that we humans struggle with? Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended. I can handle sex scenes and they don't turn me off or offend my Christian beliefs when I encounter them. They show up everywhere -- in books, TV, news, etc. So I get it. But I can't figure out what the point it. Can this story be told without such description so that you don't turn away those readers who are seeking out Christian fiction to avoid the pitfalls that those descriptive scenes could create? I am typically not a reader of romance novels. I just don't like them. They could be written wonderfully and I still wouldn't like them, so please take this with a grain of salt: It felt a little too "cookie-cutter-romance" in its writing. And there were places in the book where I wish more attention had been given to the writing. I was wishing the writing was more fresh and different. Thank you to the publisher, the author, and NetGalley for providing an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. |
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Icy Roads from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Good book! It took a while for the. truth to come out, but this was an interesting read. Janet was a super sweet character, who really did not deserve the hand she was dealt. I felt a sinister satisfaction with many of the other elements of this novel, however. Parts of the book did not seem 100% smooth, but this might be expected from a fairly a new author--and I just loved the storyline. Well worth the read! Thank you to NetGalley and J.L. Canfield for the ARC! |
This book is full of emotions and suspense. It is very well written and will keep you turning the pages. The author did an excellent job of showing how one lie can destroy lives. Thank you BooksGoSocial via NetGalley for the free copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own. |
Interesting take on an auto accident and it's effects on everyone involved including their family and friends. One friend, the investigating officer just happens to be a friend of the driver of the car that caused the accident. I think we just never think of the effect that investigating an auto accident that results in fatalities, has on the authorities involved. It was hard to read about the injuries caused by careless driving on icy roads. Sad story, but uplifting also, reading about the ultimate acceptance of what occurred and the changes that started to take place with the survivors. Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to read the advanced copy.. |
The book “Icy Roads” shows the reader that life is as slippery as an “Icy Road” once one starts down a road of lies. It is a story of friendship and betrayal that will keep the reader turning pages trying to find out what happens next. |
Icy Roads by Julie Canfield takes place over 2 days. Paul is cheating on his wife Janet, with Ursula. Paul and Ursula are involved in a serious car accident leaving Paul severely injured and Ursula almost dead. Paul’s best friend discovers the infidelity first and must decide how to break it to Janet. The setting takes place mainly at the hospital, with the book centering around the relationships between Paul, Janet and their friends who are horrified at learning the truth about Paul and Janet’s relationship. The novel is about friendship, betrayal and forgiveness. It also has a strong religious theme running through it. #netgalley #icyroads #juliecanfield #booksgosocial |
Fast read. Story moved quickly. Nice book. Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free,it had no bearing on the rating I gave it. |
This suspenseful novel will keep you on your toes and make you think. Canfield presents us with two different viewpoints and makes us question both. The writing is descriptive, and the topic is intriguing. I can't say enough good things about this book! |
