I was very familiar with Frank Lloyd Wright and his Midwest architecture. I was not as familiar with his time in New York and the city's influence on him and his work. The author has written a well researched and easy to read account. There was a lot more to the book than just the Guggenheim. Overall I really enjoyed reading it. This book will make a great gift.

A fascinating and highly readable exploration of Frank Lloyd Wright’s ambivalent relationship with New York, and the influence it had on him and he had on the city. An enormously interesting and insightful account, meticulously researched, written in a lively, entertaining and accessible style, and with excellent illustrations. It covers the rest of Wright’s life and work as well, but New York City is at the heart of the book. Highly recommended.

Frank Lloyd Wright did not like New York City, but his work there saved his career and kept him in business through the Great Depression (though it proved to be very difficult for his clients) and provided the site for the building that ensured his fame for years to come - even though it opened after his death.. The author had access to the recently opened FLW archives and the author used them for his research, thus giving plenty of new information to those of us who already thought they knew everything there was to know about this remarkable architect. .

My hat is off to Anthony Alofsin. His writing brings Frank Lloyd Wright to life for me. I knew about Wright's Guggenheim design, but I wasnt aware of just how long he was in New York, its influence on him and vice versa. I was enthralled by the glimpses into Wright's personal life and of those other New Yorkers profiled. I really appreciated the conversational tone rather than feeling lectured. This book is an effortless read, and I will be seeking out Anthony Alofsin's other writings on Wright.
I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.
