This is a great cozy mystery. It is a fast and enjoyable read. It is the second of the Sugar and Spice mysteries. Sugar and Dixie try to solve the mystery of Alma, the project leader of a town cookbook, murder. I loved the story and the characters. You do not have to read the first book to read this one but I think it would help give a little more of the back story. I am looking forward to the next book..

This is an entertaining, briskly paced mystery with an interesting premise - Sugar Calloway and her best friend Dixie Spencer are in the business of publishing community cookbooks. This gives them the opportunity to work with all kinds of community organizations and leads to a raft of new characters and plot points in each book. In this story they are working with a group of retirees at the Good Life retirement village who are part of the Crack of Dawn breakfast club and putting together a cookbook to raise money for renovations in the local park. Alma Stoller is the leader of the cookbook project so Sugar has come to know her and like her. When Alma is killed, Sugar becomes involved in trying to figure out what such a nice older lady had done to make someone murder her. With likeable characters, a fast moving plot and delicious food, this is a book to savor!

This is a terrific second book in the series. The descriptions of the food were so good my mouth was watering, and I can’t wait to try the recipes at the end of the book! Sugar is a fabulous main character and learning more backstory of the main characters was awesome. The Who-done-it was a bit to easy for me to figure out but the story was so good I didn’t mind. I am looking forward to the third book in the series already.

I was provided an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

When project leader, Alma Stoller, of the St. Ignatius "Crack of Dawn Breakfast Club" is murdered, Sugar and Dixie have to work overtime to make sure they meet the deadline and don't become a murderer's next victims!

St. Ignatius, Iowa is in an uproar and the gossip mill is in high gear! Bad boy Nick Marchant, who broke high school hearts (Dixie's included), is back in town and looking to become reacquainted. Strangers are in town and prowling around Alma's house, threats are made and the ladies have to keep their business going!

I enjoyed this book as much as the first one! Sugar and Dixie's pasts are explored (especially Sugar's father) and the characters continue to develop. The mystery solving duo are smart, independent, don't rush into danger (though it finds them!) and work with law enforcement. The books feature Sugar, in the lead role, and I love the character! She's open, funny, tries to do the right thing and is smart. Dixie is dependable, down to earth and relatable. The two of them make the perfect team!

Of course, there's the lovable feline Ernest, the "on the go seniors" - Greer and Bunny, the Red Hen (where I'd love to eat) and the funny and annoying Mrs. Pickett (you'll love her theory on weeds!) that add to the enjoyment of the series!

I'm looking forward to the next cookbook adventure!

I received an ARC for a fair and honest review of this book.

Kindle Copy for Review from NetGalley, Kensington Books and Lyrical Underground.

I received a free, advance copy of this book and this is my unbiased and voluntary review.

“Sugar” Calloway former magazine editor with blue-ribbon baker Dixie Spicer teamed up together for a community cookbook publisher business. They also have a knack in solving mysteries.

They find themselves involves in the latest fundraising project of St. Ignatius Crack of Dawn Breakfast Club which is known for all you can eat biscuit and gravy fare. But soon someone get more than just gravy as they end up early in their grave.

Throw in the return of the local bad boy, who keeps the gossip and mayhem alive. Will they be able to figure out the killer before the killer turns their sight on them?

A yummy read which makes you want to try the recipes at the end of the book.
