I love Ted Dekker. I have read other books by him and loved them. However, The Girl Behind the Red Rope was not for me. I love a good mystery/thriller book, but am not a fan of fantasy or dystopian books.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book for an honest review.

I tried to read this book but apparently the story is not for me. It did not catch my interest. But I like the cover and it is interesting that the authors are father - dauther.

Unfortunately not the book for me. I started reading it but the story wasn’t gripping me as I’d hoped it would.

Thank you Netgalley and publisher for accepting my request.
This was one of my favourite reads of 2019.
I've read and loved Ted Dekker's previous books and this one did not disappoint. It's full of twists and turns. I found myself completely absorbed in the story and I finished it in one sitting. An amazing thought provoking book.

Not my kind of book, I don't mix well with dystopian (which I didn't know when I requested the book) and the Christian undertones completely put me off. Nope, not for me

This is such a suspenseful story. Fans of the Dekkers will love that the father/daughter duo teams up to bring a unique flavor to this story.

Perfect love casts out fear is the premise behind Rachel and Tedd Dekker’s latest novel, The Girl Behind the Red Rope. It has elements of allegory, but I found myself trying to decide how to interpret it. Near the end of the book, the authors spell it out for the reader, which I found helpful.

Grace is part of a community of believers who have secluded themselves for protection against the Fury, which will destroy the world in the near future. Her estranged father returns to the community and brings the boy Eli, who enlightens Grace to the slavery of fear. The community’s fear is so deeply ingrained that it will destroy them unless Grace can help them to see the truth.

The authors give the reader much to ponder and write in the famed Dekker style, with lots of psychological suspense which keeps the reader engaged.

Fans of the Dekkers or Frank Peretti will enjoy this thought-provoking novel. I received a free copy from the publisher for this, my honest review.

This was a phenomenal book about love, fear and hatred. Learning to know the difference between all three. That’s pretty much the only way I can sum it up without spoiling it. I loved it.

I've read several of Ted Dekker's books, and I have loved them. This one was just okay.

I felt like the story wasn't developed enough, and I couldn't get a feel for what, if anything, exactly happened outside of this religious cult community. Since the members weren't allowed to venture past the perimeter, they only had the word of their leader, Rose, to go on. And Rose was being fed lies by a demon (whom she believed to be an angel) who appeared to her when she was younger and being terribly abused. It was the demon who convinced this group to set themselves apart.

Religious law versus freedom in Christ is the "moral behind the story," but if I were not a Christian, I wouldn't have gotten the point. The message just fell a bit flat, and this didn't leave me with a good feeling for some reason.

I'll still read Ted Dekker's books because this is the first that has not wowed me. Hopefully the next novel will once again.

2.5 stars

The Girl Behind the Red Rope was a bit of a disappointment for me. I've read most of Ted Dekker's previous stories and loved many of them; unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me.

Even though I wasn't a fan of the story overall, there were things I enjoyed. I found the MC to be a likable character and I loved how heroic she was at times (I won't say how, since that would be a spoiler). I also liked the writing style - it was easy to read and held my attention.

I didn't like the supernatural elements or the whole "cult" part of the story. It was just too weird for me and I felt uncomfortable at times.

All in all, The Girl Behind the Red Rope wasn't for me.

This is another book about people who shut themselves off from the outside world to be pure and faithful to the God they perceive. The authors keep you wondering if the characters are angels or demons. If you feel the nudge to stop reading, don't be deceived that it may be the Holy Spirit. The devil works in many of the same ways. I just wish I could read faster and could have read the book in one sitting. I'm glad I read it to the end. The thoughts expressed here will challenge you to think about what you really see and really believe. Do you live in fear and the darkness or do you live in love and the light? Where do you choose to live?

This story lit a fire that burned the haze around my eyes that I didn’t even know was there. Nothing prepared me for plunging into this world and watching it smolder before my eyes. Life is rarely as it seems, but these words carefully and lovingly placed on these pages made my heart ache and my mind race. It brought to light questions that terrified and delighted me, and I was left a bit of a mess while I figured things out. The revelations, terror, and passion that breathes within these pages will burn down your mind, heart, and soul until all that is left is you. The raw and real version of you. It will either comfort you immensely or leave you in a state of sheer panic.

Grace has grown up in her own world. She has learned to never question the traditions, rules, and restrictions that have been placed up on her. Resigned in a state of blank contentment, she moves from day to and day doing what is expected of her. Only one day, everything changes. Her mind wrestles with her heart to unsuccessfully stop the question that rears its ugly head. A question that will change everything if she gives breath to it much less any thought. As the darkness closes in around her, she must decide if it is better to remain silent or seek out the truth she longs for. Is it better to topple your entire world with the truth or live with a gnawing doubt in the back of your mind? When all else fails, we have nothing but our own heart to fall back on. In the end, can we even trust our own heart to not lead us astray?

Intensity that brought me to my knees is how I would characterize this book. What you find is a truly powerful revelation that is beyond human description. Your heart won’t be able to contain the implications and the devastation that you will find within these pages. You will be tempted to put this book down and never come back. Acceptance is something you can’t take back once given, so beware if you think you have the courage to open this book. Your perception and reality will not align. What you will find will collide and demolish everything you know or think you know. Can you stand up against something that will overtake and consume you whole?

Ted Dekker has never failed to shake my heart and mind up with his revelations of the truth. His stories have destroyed my world as only a plant sized earthquake and devastating tsunami can do. I have never failed to lose my heart to his phenomenal characters, and this story was no exception. Adding in his daughter Rachelle was like double whammy. I had absolutely no chance of survival, and I knew that going into this book. However, I was willing to sacrifice whatever was needed to mine and savor the truth that I knew I would find within this wicked twister of a ride. Whatever you do, do not miss this incredible masterpiece! Everyone truly needs this light in their life. Do not walk by and let someone else take your place. Jump on in and savor the ride!

“Evil cannot remain hidden for long.”

“The biggest lie is that fear will keep you safe in the darkness, but fear is the darkness. So round and round you go, fighting darkness with darkness. Better to open your eyes and see the light. In that light, there is no darkness. So you’ve always been safe. You just don’t know it because you’re blind to who you are as the light.”

“My Father is light, and in him there is no darkness. I am the light of the world. My Father is love, and as I experience true love I experience him, he in me and I in him, as one. There is no fear in true love, the love that holds no record of wrong. That love is the evidence of being in the light.”

Fear, he is a liar. This is the message that Ted and daughter Rachelle Dekker offer/cram down our throats throughout. It’s a great message, don’t get me wrong, but it does come across a bit heavy handed. And that’s a shame because there truly are some moments of brilliance from Team Dekker.

Full disclosure. I often find Ted Dekker’s books to be hit or miss, mostly because I like it when books with supernatural elements offer like 90-95% reality with 5-10% supernatural or aspects beyond reality. Give me a believable story with believable characters for the most part and I can extend my imagination for the rest. I loved Dekker’s Three, Skin, The Boneman’s Daughter, and The Bride Collector since I felt they were closer to reality than others. So maybe The Girl Behind The Red Rope was doomed for me from the start! If you like more fantasy, allegory, and supernatural than believable, then this book is for you.

I thought maybe the book was going in a direction of M Night Shyamalan’s The Village but quickly takes a unique turn. I wish the characters were more likable. I never truly felt anything for Grace and her family nor any of the characters of Haven Valley. I felt like their was a really good premise that gets bogged down in allegory and pages upon pages of replacing fear with love. Again, a good message but the overall story for me took away from the message and had me plodding through until the end.

I'd sum this book up as a Christian amalgamation of Stephen King's Children of the Corn, the movie The Village and any cult like commune you've ever heard of. It ou s a good book...but not great.

I will say it is not a read in one setting, nor a read in the dark book. And to truly understand it I think I need to read it several times.

It was enjoyable and I'm proud to have had the opportunity to review it.

Thank you NetGalley for my review copy.

The Girl Behind the Red Rope is a little different of a read I normally read. That being said, I thought it was refreshing to reading something unique. This is one of those books that made me think and take my time to read. I was intrigued right from the start and stayed that way until the end.

I give The Girl Behind the Red Rope four and a half stars. I am recommending it to other readers who enjoy a thought provoking and clean read.

I've read several books by both Ted and Rachelle Dekker and have enjoyed them all. This book was no different. Easy to read and makes you think. I highly recommend this book.

Wow! The Girl Behind the Red Rope was yet another wild ride by Ted and Rachelle Dekker. What truth controls you? In this fictional thriller, Ted and Rachelle probe how our perceptions are molded by what we believe or is it that our beliefs are molded by how we perceive the world around us. Taken at face value as just a work of fiction, this novel is suspenseful and as good as all his other books. As you get to the end, you realize that there has been such deep truths woven throughout the storyline about our beliefs and the spiritual battle that is going on around us. I couldn’t put it down!

I received the ARC of this book, but all reviews and opinions are my own.

First and foremost, I have to mention the cover art. Wow—it certainly captures my attention, and the title draws me in quickly. Even though this isn’t the type of book I normally read, I wanted to know more. I wanted to know who the girl was, and what the rope kept out, or in, or perhaps symbolized.

This story is very different. That’s the best way for me to explain it. It’s Christian, it’s a thriller, kind of dystopian, and strange. It’s difficult to pigeonhole into one category. I want to mention, I’ve never read dystopian novels, and have little if any interest in them, but the eerie, spiritual essence from the first chapter of this book drew me in quickly.

I’ve never read a book by these authors (father and daughter, Ted and Rachelle Dekker.) As I understand it, it’s their first collaborative book together, and that intrigues me. A suspenseful and original story!

Yes Yes I admit I'm a Dekker newbie.
I love the cover of this book! So mysterious looking and the most coolest thing of all is the rope itself on the cover for it feels like a real rope!! I was very surprised!
I think what I enjoyed the most was the many twists, turns and surprises that were in the story.
I know I had to blink a couple of times throughout the story because there were places in it that I found somewhat fantasy? Some was just too questionable.
I did like that Ted and Rachelle made the characters life like amd I could feel their feelings coming through the book. That's why I stayed with the story because I wanted to see what happened to them.
Fear is a very real emotion. You can control it but you can't run from it. Does that make sense? Satan uses that against each and everyone of us. It can lie low or it can come full force. Depending on how you control it is up to you.
Oh and did I say this book is creepy and will give you nightmares? It did me! Made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and now I'm looking in every dark corner of my house lol!! I've left a light on in the bathrooms or have had a nightlight on for years even before this book came out. When I seen Night of the Living Dead that took care of the dark for me!
Yes, I am a believer but I still have insecurities as I imagine we all do!!
But I guess this is what thrillers are all about which is why I gave it 4 stars.
You'll just have to read the book to find out.
My thanks to Revell Reads for this book. NO compensations were received. All opinions are my own.
