'Frankie's Favorite Food' is one that he just cannot pin down. There are too many yummy options!

So instead of making him choose between so many, his teacher lets him be in charge of ALL the foodie costumes!

This is a delightful story of finding who you are and learning to be creative!

Back when the Pandemic lockdown started, I decided that kids who were stuck at home were missing out on their classroom teachers and their school librarians reading to them each day, so I decided *I* would be that reader for them. Kelsey Garrity-Riley's book was one of my favorites that I shared on my daily reading.

Oh my goodness. This is OFFICIALLY my favorite picture book of the year! I loved everything about this one!! The story, the illustrations, the food puns, FRANKIE. Frankie can’t decide what food he should dress up as for his school’s play, because he loves all the foods. (I feel ya, Frankie.)

Mrs. Mellon suggests he should be the costume manager, since he loves all the foods so much. Frankie shines in his role and makes the show a success! And what a show it is – from breakfast to dessert, every food gets to shine, even the preschoolers in their precious little rice and bean costumes. And I think there was an ode to Les Mis in there? Complete with a barricade of fruit?? Did I mention I LOVED THIS???

Also, there are many, many amazing food puns, which I equally adored.

Aaaaand, at the very end, Frankie realizes he can be part of the show after all and comes up with the perfect costume! I had a smile on my face throughout this book, and that ending was just the cherry on top for me! (no pun intended… ahaha jk food pun totally intended)

Final verdict: I'm obsessed with it! I thought this book was amazing! It's now officially one of my favorite books! I shall be shouting about it from the rooftops for days and I am currently recommending it to everyone I come in contact with!

Thanks Net Galley for the preview!

I liked the overall idea of this book and the illustrations were beautiful. My copy was hard to read since some sentences were formatted incorrectly causing 2 sentences to be jumbled. I think my only hesitation with the story is the ending. It's okay not to know what you want and to have many interests but in a children's book I really look for the moral and or message to be one of growth. Frankie was helping his friends and that came close but needed more development to make it a book about helping others.

This was a fun food adventure. Frankie is the opposite of a picky eater, he loves all food. He loves it so much he has a hard time picking his favorite food to make into a costume for the last day of school. His teacher is completely understanding and lets him be the stage manager until he comes up with the perfect idea. The ending is what really makes this book sing. Up to then it was kind of boring, but the ending makes a great meal.

Whether introducing a child to new foods or laughing along as they pick and choose their own favorites, this is a fun and energetic read. A great book for any future foodie!

#FrankiesFavoriteFood is scrumptious and adorable. Frankie is part of his school’s food-extravaganza...only one problem. He doesn’t have a favorite food. He loves ALL of them. Will he find a favorite in time for the big show? Adorable, highly recommend. Thanks to #NetGalley for an eARC

Frankie is the opposite of a picky eater, he likes nearly everything. So, when he has to choose a food costume to dress up as for the end-of-the-school-year play be becomes incredibly indecisive. He pitches some wacky mashups to his teacher (like a sandwich that includes kimchi, pickles, pad thai and cheesecake). Thankfully, the teacher finds creative way to fit him into the play, while he continues his path of self discovery... of his favorite food.

This is a fun book. It is covertly about diet, about the various meals of the day and what components you might find in them. It also references some more cultural foods that could have a young reader questioning them and so they learn new things. All of this is done in a way that isn't ultra in your face with its educational value, the story makes sense and flows in a relaxing way aided by colorful artwork of the food and costumed children.

This is the type of book you'd want on the shelf if you wanted to teach (in a light way) a young child about different types of foods, the meals of the day and if they have issues like being picky or perhaps having the same issue as Frankie - not being able to pick favorites.

"Oh no, my salsa!" says Billy the burrito kid as he takes his break dancing a bit too far, rolling off stage.

Frankie's Favorite Food had me laughing from beginning to end. Maybe it was because I too love food or maybe it was because we all have a hard time making decisions sometimes. Whatever the reason, I think that kids (and adults) will connect with the story and have fun reading it. And in the end, we all love some leftovers!

Frankie's Favorite Food has everything I love in it. One, there are yummy looking food and I feel the same way as Frankie - who could pick just one favorite food? Two, cheesy puns and alliteration are always a crowd-pleaser! And three, the story sends a wonderful message about being different and not necessarily knowing your path, but being able to find meaning and joy!

For the school performance, each child is going to dress up as a favorite food. There is a wonderful array of choices. The only one who cannot decide is Frankie because he likes so many things! His teacher is not in favor of some of his amusing combinations. She suggests that instead he help with the costumes. As a reader, I was not sure that I agreed with the message that sent as it seemed to discourage Frankie's creativity. But..wait until the end to see what Frankie does.

This is a book with very cute illustrations. I did not completely agree with the teacher offering Frankie an option other than being a food, even though Frankie did not mind. If you read this one, let me know what you think.

This was so cute. My 5 year old loved the funny food puns in the story and the illustrations. I always enjoy reading books about different foods to my daughter as I think it helps make her more open to trying new things.

Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for giving me an opportunity to read this eArc.

When I told my son to read this book with me he wasn't enthusiastic about the title or topic. Then I started reading and my 2 year old daughter insisted she sit on my lap for this story as well! Soon we were gathered around my computer screen and started laughing at the cute illustrations of kids dressing up as their favorite food. This book is adorable, funny, with beautiful illustrations and it made my son and I discuss what our costumes would be if we were in the book. That made us laugh some more. I need a copy of this book for my kids and I would definitely buy this as a gift for other kids! It is an outstanding book that left a smile on all our faces. At the end, even my son said that it was the best book ever. 😁 It also made me hungry...😂

10/10 stars this book wins.
Great art
Adorable (relatable!!!!) MC (a brown kid who LOVES all the foods)
Fun cast of characters (all his classmates dressed as foods)
Food puns that cheer others on throughout
And a sweet ending that is again, relatable!

This is perfect for the classroom or for home. It’s simple but in its simplicity it really is a win.

Buying it! / Giving it as a gift / Using in my classroom!

Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Only dilemma is it made me hungry, I’m off to make a big meal fit for a food lover like Frankie!

This was so cute! Loved the art and the story. An adorable story of a boy who can't choose a favorite food to be in his school's play, so both he and his teacher come up with a great compromise.

Frankie’s Favorite Food could easily be written about my son. This was a cute story about a creative boy named Frankie who loves all things food! Taking his passion for food to the stage he creates a wonderful play with his classmates.

The drawings were bright and eye catching and the story was fun and short. A positive food related story in a word of picky eaters!

I think I might Spa-get-ti this for my son to read!

Cute storybook about a boy who loves food so much he can't decide what he wants to dress up as for the school play. He ends up helping his classmates and in the mist of all the commotion he figures out what he wants to be. Delightfully funny and fun to read.

This is a cute story about a kid who loves food so much that he can't decide on his favourite. All the kids at his school are dressing up as their favourite foods for the end-of-year show. But since Frankie can't decide on a favourite, his teacher makes him the costume manager. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as Frankie helps everyone else be their best food-selves and makes the show run smoothly. And when it's all over, Frankie finally figures out what his costume should be!

There are quite a few puns that might go over kids' heads, but adults will get them. The illustrations are pretty cute, and it's refreshing to see kids' favourite foods being something other than chicken nuggets and goldfish crackers. There's pasta, dumplings, fruit, falafel, and a hapless burrito that runs into a bit of trouble. The pictures are simple and stylized, but they work really well to show off all the different foods.

I quite enjoyed this one. I'll have to watch for more fun stories from this author/illustrator in the future!
