The Girl Who Rode a Shark is an absolutely beautiful and inspiring book for girls and generally humans of all ages. I would have loved this as a kid, searching for strong women to connect with and admire, but reading it in my early thirties as I navigate a life that hasn't necessarily turned out the way I wanted has definitely been a rewarding experience.

This is a book for all of us, a reminder that we all can be great, that we all can accomplish something. It's amazing how many of these incredible women had flown under my radar for so much of my life, but it's also like they joined my story at exactly the right time. And I'm all the better for it.

I can absolutely see this being something that I gift the ladies in my life, be they binary or not, be they young or aging.

My fascination with amazing women is no secret. I'm constantly on the lookout for more inspiring figurees, making books like this one thrilling to explore. Ross introduces the reader to more than 50 women, organized by the kind of contribution they made to their society or to the world at large. Each woman gets a couple of pages of information, mostly focused on their achievement. Most will be unfamiliar to readers, so hopefully young readers will be inspired to do more research. At the end of each profile, we are given the names of a couple of women who made similar achievements. So the reader walks away from this book with the names of more than 100 amazing women!

This book was so fun! It has a lot of short one-page biographies of women, then a beautifully illustrated page with an image from their life. It's such a good book to have for a child to read to them in bits and pieces. It is a great tool to help them learn about important, and fun women of history!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The Girl Who Rode a Shark: And Other Stories of Daring Women was written by Ailsa Ross and illustrated by Amy Blackwell. Itis currently scheduled for release on October 25 2019. This non fiction book is a rousing collection of biographies focused on women and girls who have written, explored, or otherwise plunged headfirst into the pages of history. Undaunted by expectations, they made their mark by persevering in pursuit of their passions. The tales come from a huge variety of times and places, from a Canadian astronaut to an Indian secret agent to a Balkan pirate queen who stood up to Ancient Rome. Author and activist Ailsa Ross gives readers a fun, informative piece of nonfiction that emphasizes the boundless potential of a new generation of women.

The Girl Who Rode a Shark tells the stories of some amazing woman. A good many of them I knew, but some (and their exploits) were new to me. I think it is wonderful that people are taking the time and effort to uncover tales of those so often forgotten in history classes. I thought that the short biographies were well written and accessible, and found the illustrations to be colorful and I think they added a nice touch throughout the book. I liked the varieties of woman included, and how they were organized by kind of adventures they had rather than time they lived or location. I also liked that such a nice variety of cultures and eras are included in the book as well. I really enjoyed the read and got a great deal from it, and I think other readers of all ages will as well.

The Girl Who Rode a Shark is a great collection of short biographies about amazing woman. I think this is a great choice for classrooms and libraries to encourage readers to follow their dreams, and to show them that they can do anything with enough effort- no matter who they are.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this anthology of complex female heroes for younger readers. I was pleasantly surprised to see women I have not seen before in similar anthologies and I liked the divisions into artists, adventurers, activists etc. There were also a fair number of fairly contemporary female heroes. I especially liked that after each mini bio there was a list of a more women who did similar things, for the reader to look up or research later. I immediately looked up some of these names and feel it would be very useful for readers super interested in a particular subject matter like female scientists. The illustrations I also felt were very well done. I hope the artist and author make another anthology!
Also I appreciated the glossary, well done and very accessible.

This is a beautifully illustrated book that chronicles the lives of 52 women from all walks of life and all time periods. Some of the names are recognizable like Amelia Earhart or Bessie Coleman, but many of the women featured were not well-known to me, including Shannen Koostachin, "the teenager who fought for education in First Nations communities" and Kimi Werner, "the freediving chef who rode a shark".

I like how the book is organized into different section like Artists, Pioneers, Scientists, etc. Each section in the book starts with a map showing where each woman lived. Then there is a one-page mini biography about each woman. It is a beautiful book, and I can't wait to add this to my library's collection. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy.

The Girl Who Rode a Shark will be an excellent addition to our classroom library full of girl power. The women in this book are bold, brave and wonderful and I am happy to help children learn about these lesser known women. Our classroom will celebrate this book and the women in it.

***Thanks to the publisher and #NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

I've read a lot of books about strong women lately. It seems like there are new editions every day in the Juvenile and Children's section at the library. Most have sharp and colorful illustration and funky font. This book is not much different than other anthologies I've read. It does feature quite a few people I've never heard of before. I appreciate women like Amelia Earheart, but learning about more current heroes, like Jade Hameister, a polar explorer who stood up to bullies and proved that she can do anything a man can do.

A collection of stories about amazing women throughout history. The women chosen come from a variety of backgrounds and regions which makes it a very interesting read and will be inspiring for all girls and boys from all backgrounds as well. The art work is eye catching and they have added maps showing where each of the women originated from which adds more visual detail..

Talk about girl power! This book is packed full of amazing women. There were quite a few women who I hadn't heard about. I enjoyed reading the mini-biographies on each. There were some women that I did know, but I learned even more information about them. After each woman's biography, there are suggestions on similar women to research. This book is beautifully illustrated and designed. Readers will be drawn to the interesting visuals and information.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this copy to read and review.
