The Sunday Potluck Club is about a group of friends in Alaska who met under the worst kind of circumstances- each had a parent in the cancer ward of the hospital. During their time in the hospital, they all found one another and built friendships over their shared experiences.

The main character, Amy, is the motherly and level headed one of the group. Which is why it is so hard for the other women to see that she is not handling her life without her mother well. Not only is she trying to adapt to this new life, when she finally returns to work as a teacher she is met by a student who won't speak and then on her way home she gets into a car accident!

Will Amy's luck turnaround? Will she ever see the handsome stranger from the car accident again? Will we find out the story behind the troubled student?

I enjoyed how well thought out the characters were and how the story highlighted the difficult topic of loosing a parent. Just from the first few chapters I can tell that this story will have great depth and heart-and romance!

Amy was written in a way that you can connect with her even if you haven't been in her exact situation. You can feel the different emotions she must be going through and I found myself rooting for her even by only reading this excerpt.

The only thing I am disappointed about is how I have to wait until 2020 to find out what happens!

This excerpt was a cute little story about how four friends- Amy, Nichole, Hazel and Bridget- formed a bonding friendship while dealing with their hard situations at a hospital. I read a preview of this book, and so far it does not disappoint. Four women (Amy, Bridget, Nichole, and Hazel) are interconnected in one of the worst possible ways, their parents having cancer. What the preview showed left me wanting more. What will become of these four women? Will they remain friends or will their friendship slowly fizzle out? We get a glimpse at how each one is differently affected by their ordeal and how their situations may have possibly changed who they are. I can't wait to read the full book so I can see how this story plays out.

Although this is just an excerpt from the book it drew me in almost immediately. The situation is both unique and far too common,. I love that the ladies have found their tribe through tragedy. I also love the different expressions of grief and the acknowledgement of validity. I think thats a rare thing but its important. I'm pretty excited to see where this one goes!! Its definitely been added to my TBR!

A solid entry in the series. McDermid does not disappoint, always staying on the cusp of new technology and current events. Everyone is moving on in a new direction with Paula being showcased. Character development is moving right along as Tony and Carol' s relationship evolves. A favorite series.

I can’t wait to read the rest of the book and find out what happens to Amy and the rest of the club.

This is a story about friends meeting in the hospital cancer ward while each had been caring for a parent in the terminal stages of the disease. I could totally relate to this as I cared for my father. I loved all the connections I made throughout the book.

As each of the ladies tries to deal with their grief in their own way they are supportive of each other and lift each other up and toward healing, after their loss. I love how this story shows that there is no right or wrong way to grieve. We all find our way through and having support is a blessing.

I enjoyed this preview and am looking forward to the release of the book! The characters are warm, the story-line pulled me in immediately. Friends who meet over their mutual despair over the death of a loved one, and the grieving women bond over food, tears, laughter and fun.

I was more interested to know more about Trent and Olivia then her friends. I wonder if Olivia could be his daughter.

This story starts out very heavy with the death of Amy’s mother from brain cancer. The tone is heavy with bits of humor mixed in. However it felt sad, but relatable for many. I really enjoyed the aspect of Amy being a teacher and the shy girl, Olivia, she meets on the first day. As a teacher I was able to imagine that scenario and put myself in her shoes. I’m hoping as we learn more about these four friends the story will become more light hearted and explore their growing and changing identities and relationships.

Absolutely loved the preview of this book. We meet four individuals whose friendship was born during a time of great hardship and loss. Each of their lives changed forever by the challenge of loving and caring for a parent with cancer. A story thus far about grief, friendship and how we move forward from such incredible losses. Looking forward to reading this one when it comes out in the spring of 2020.

This might be a really lovely novel. The excerpt introduces four friends who met at a cancer ward and lost a loved one to cancer. Amy, the main character, is struggling quite hard after losing her mother to cancer, especially since the disease changed her mother's personality.

It's a book about grief, about rebuilding your life after you have lost an important person in your life.

This excerpt left me wanting more. I liked the humor intertwined in the text, and the friendships were amazing. It feels like the start of an engaging novel. I look forward to the full book.

This was a generous excerpt of The Sunday Potluck Club, with ten chapters I read through all in one sitting! I loved the synopsis for this book, and having all four of these women support each other like they did was so moving. The one thing I didn't enjoy in the ten chapters I read, however, was the main character herself. Of the four women, I actually found Amy to be the least interesting in both personality and job. Based on this excerpt, I'm not sure I'll ever be interested in Amy or her life, but I'd love for the full book to change my mind about her!

This book seems like it will be a light summer read. The story revolves around friends that meet by chance at a cancer ward at a hospital in Anchorage. Each one struggles on how to deal with the loss of a loved one.

Just a taster not the full book but looks good from what I read. Just started to get to know the characters and how they are connected.

It’s hard to rate a book that you only have a few chapters of, but I will be interested for the book release to finish it. Characters need more development but I am sure that will happen in the coming chapters.

I have only read a short excerpt of this book, but so far I have really liked it. Four friends who met while dealing with a parent who had cancer, and now they must try to figure out how to move on with life after cancer. Life as they knew it is no longer the same. Each must find a new normal, Will they be able to do it and stay friends? I look forward to the release of this book.

This was not the full book, but I read the few chapters that were allotted to me. To be honest, the writing was choppy, the characters were not very developed, and the story wasn't very engaging. I don't plan on reading the full book (unless I see higher ratings via Goodreads from others who have read the entire book). Even though I didn't care for this book, I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to review it.

This was only a snippet of the book, but I'm very intrigued and hope to read the entire novel when available!

This follows four female friends who met in the cafeteria / waiting areas of a hospital as they all had parents who were getting treatment for cancer. 3/4 lose their parents, and are struggling with grief in different ways.

Our main character Amy, who is starting to finally feel relatively normal after losing her mother 3 months ago, struggles to see why her friend Bridget, who just lost her mother, has such a positive outlook on life.

There is not much to stay, although I expect this book will deal with a lot of grief, finding yourself after tragedy, friends that become family, and presumably, romance for Amy (given that this is in the romance category).

While Amy seems a bit wound up and unnecessarily angry, the book has a very interesting concept and I am excited to see where it goes.
