Kayla suddenly finds out she’s got cancer
There world is turned upside down .Kayla has an operation to remove the cancer and she then starts on Chemo. But the Chemo isn’t working and it’s making her sicker . So Kayla decides she doesn’t want anymore treatment.
She want to do one last thing for her mum to make sure she goes on after Kayla is gone . So she enrols her best friend and Charlotte to help her do it.
This is such a heartbreaking read but also brilliantly written. If this book doesn’t have you sobbing I don’t know what will.
Brilliant Brooke Harris

An extraordinary book - extremely sad and depressing. Unforgettable and compassionate. Heather, Charlotte and Gavin cope and battle with their 15-year-old Kayla when she becomes seriously ill. A bizarre family set-up as they rally to support Kayla. It must be strange having your husband's ex stay with you. I found it quite an uncomfortable read with the underlying stress of the characters on several levels. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley!

I will say this first. As a mom, this book made me stop and hug my children even tighter before bed. My heart hurt. I don't think anyone could walk away from this book and NOT be emotionally effected. What a beautiful, sad story.

If you read the blurb you know that this is probably going to be a sad story and it is. I would imagine it would be difficult to come away from it emotionally unaffected, but ultimately it is a story of family, love and compassion.

It might be a difficult read for some people but it will make you hug your children tight.

This was beautifully written and an amazing book. It covered a subject that any of us would hope never to experience.
It was written from the prospective of a mum, Heather.and her daughter Kayla, her dad Gavin and his new wife Charlotte.
Chapters were written from each of the different characters perspectives. It was very sensitively handled but making the reader realise that even in the darkest hours there is always hope. I’ll admit at times you need tissues but you will also laugh. The book was very thought provoking and makes the saying Live for today even more poignant
I would recommend this book to anyone
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookoutre, and Brooke Harris for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Forever Gift’ by Brooke Harris in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Heather and fifteen-year-old Kayla are more than just mum and daughter, they’re best friends too. When Kayla collapses playing basketball at school Heather’s whole world is about to fall apart and she comes to rely on Kayla’s dad Gavin, his wife Charlotte and their four-year-old daughter Molly for strength and support. When Kayla realises she has just weeks to live she plans a big surprise for Heather, and with the help of Charlotte and her best-friend Aiden she leaves her a gift box containing a special key ring and a message telling her to live life to the full.

I’ve just finished reading this heart-breaking story and it’s made me feel so emotional that even now I have tears streaming down my face. It’s been beautifully written with love and compassion, and the issue of cancer has been dealt with sensitively and with humour. I loved the characters and wanted the story to go on for longer. Unfortunately I can’t give it more than 5 stars but it deserves every single one of them. Thank you, Brooke Harris, for this truly amazing story which will be hard to forget and will stay in my thoughts for a long time.

This is the second novel that I have read and reviewed by Brooke Harris in the last five months. I’m so very glad I have had this opportunity because I really love both stories. There are similarities in these two novels certainly but the differences are more than noteworthy and of the two stories, this in my favourite. It’s an emotional rollercoaster of a novel as fifteen year old Kayla finds out that she is very seriously ill and is eventually hospital bound. She has everything to live for; she is super-sporty, well liked and is surrounded by good friends and two very supportive families. She really hopes she can get better and live life to the full.
Heather, her mother, and Kayla have the closest of relationships and the news hits them both like a bolt out of the blue. They both shed tears but they also put on a show of bravery and support each other every step of the difficult journey they have been forced by circumstances to take. They are the best of friends and live together in a home full of mutual love, respect and caring. Heather’s ex-husband has remarried and has an adorable four-year old daughter with his new wife. Kayla adores her half-sister Molly and gets on very well with her stepmother. As merged families go, these are excellent role models.
Kayla is so worried about Heather that she initiates not one but two bold plans that she hopes will ease the days when Heather is living on her own. Unable to organise these complicated plans wholly by herself as her condition deteriorates, she recruits those friends and family she knows have the determination, skills, flair and ability to act for her and who she can trust implicitly. These plans take a lot of thought and she participates when she is able to, directing operations from her sickbed. The only worry that she has is that her mother will find out about what Kayla has in mind. She wants the secrets kept until her mother will have no choice but to comply, but as time inevitably runs out, someone unwittingly lets the cat out of the bag and Kayla is worried that her plans will be to no avail. She fears that her forever gifts will fail even before the planning is irrevocably put into place. She prays she will succeed.
This story is about family, friends and love. It is beautifully written with compassion and understanding. The characters within the story are skilfully crafted and developed so that they become etched into your heart and you really care about them, full of empathy and wanting the very best outcome for them. I liked them all, but the two half-sisters Kayla and Molly stood out like beacons, Kayla for her thoughtfulness and foresight and little Molly because she was adorable, funny, caring and wise beyond her years. Although I cried hot tears at times, I ultimately felt sure this story was uplifting despite its sad storyboard. I thought it was inclusive and I liked the way that the author wrote from different viewpoints.
This is a compelling and hugely enjoyable novel. I received it from publisher Bookouture through my membership of NetGalley and in return for an honest, unbiased review. It’s an absolute stunner of a novel. Thanks you most sincerely for my copy. It’s another 4.5* review from me and a very hearty recommendation that this is an excellent read.

Heathers daughter Kayla is fifteen and is her world. She is her best friend and they have a special relationship because it’s just the two of them. Now though, Kayla knows her time is short and she wants to give something back to her mother. With a handful of days left Kayla needs help from people around her to make her last surprise happen. Along the way, the people whose lives have been touched by Kayla’s light will be changed by her loss and by her plan for Heather. As Heathers life starts to fall apart could Kayla’s gift be the key to putting her life back together?

This is easily five stars for me! A very good story, fantastic characters and very emotional. A quick read, but I tried to take my time in reading it, I had to put it down to reach for tissues occasionally so I would use this time to reflect on the story and get myself ready for the next few chapters. A sad but very thought provoking read.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Ive had to walk away and reflect before I could write a review of this book. Not just to reflect but to stop crying, ugly crying.
Saying that you just have to go on this journey.
Some will say a roller coaster,I would say a journey through the eyes of a number of well written characters where you will laugh, cry and most of all ponder how lucky you are. Theres the reflection,to appreciate what you have.

What is the worse thing that can happen to you? Kayla finds this out in the toughest way possible. The experience of this 15 year old is extremely limited but a diagnosis turns her in to the strongest and potentially bravest and most grown up of all in this book. The strength, compassion and descriptions have you championing her and placing yourself quite easily in her position. What would you do? People please or do what you feel is right by facing the toughest decision a person will ever make, but with a twist.
Charlie, the new wife has me feeling a number of different emotions and it would have been easy to write her more favourably but who's to say that isn't actually what you would do.
Molly is a god send throughout this book but get to Christmas day and I won't ruin for you but have the tissues ready.Mollys intertwined humour and naivety is welcome and takes the weight out of the topic but also makes you realise that life continues around everyone when their life feels to be at a standstill encompassed with shock.
As a parent you will identify with Heather and you cannot help but put yourself in her shoes.

I can't say enough good things about this. To tackle a subject like this and still have people raving about the quality, the emotion and the smiles that tug at your lips is testament to the quality of authorship.

Each time I think I won't cry as much as the last book but hey ho its a cathartic experience and not reading this would be worse.
5 easy stars -great story, characters and emotions. A page turner but pace yourself, I took it slow and digested my feelings as well as those from the book. Top tip -home alone or in a room by yourself for the last 20%. Don't drive for that last 20% if this is released on audible- or look for a lay-by.

What an amazing, but so sad book. There are people who will find this book very hard to read, which is understandable but I loved it. Even if I was sitting on the train with tears rolling down my cheeks!

A good read but personally I felt it was aimed at a YA audience.

It is a well developed story, interesting characters and sad in parts but personally it wasn't for me although I am sure I will be in the minority.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. It was an amazing book about a teenager struggling with cancer. But there are some uplifting parts too. I really enjoyed it. It really makes you realize to live each day to the fullest.

This author writes such beautiful books.
I read and loved When You’re Gone by her and so I was really excited to read this one.
The book centres on 15 year old Kayla, a promising basketball player who has her future cruelly curtailed by a life threatening illness.
From page one I was hooked. I love this author’s writing style which just flows whilst also having such depth , content and amazing characterisation.
We read alternating chapters from Mum Heather, Step Mum Charlotte and Kayla herself and through this we see the individual emotions, hopes and fears each are going through.
My favourite characters were Kayla’s best friend and confidante Aiden who bunks off school weekly to visit Kayla and little Sister Molly who keeps the family going with her childhood innocence .
This is not an easy subject to write about but the author writes so sensitively that alongside despair and fear you also see hope and a future.
This book should come with a packet of tissues and also a warning to not read it in a public place.
Thanks once again to the author for an amazing read .

Wow, i devoured this book. It definetly tugged on my heart strings. The style of writing was fantastic and i loved the way it switched between characters so you had a perspective from different sides. Highly recommend this book and will be keeping an eye out for future books.

What a sad but uplifting book, I'm so glad I didn't read the last chapters on the train as I was sobbing out of control and when I wasn't actually crying I had a huge lump in my throat. Kayla and each of the people closest to her tell their own story and how they cope with what is happening, it's like a runaway train there is nothing any of them can do to make the bad things stop. I have read the other books by Brooke Harris but this one has got to be her best, I absolutely loved it.

An uplifting, yet tragic story of a fifteen year old who has her whole life ahead of her and as it is cut short, lives on, and continues to give her gift of love!
I adored Kayla, her family, and friends. A wonderfully strong network of tenderness and warmth that brought me to tears at times.
You won't regret reading this novel and you will stop and think of your own life, family and friends once you finish the very last page!
Excellent!

Oh my goodness where do I even start with my review for this amazing book. What an absolutely fabulous read, there were times I had to stop reading as I couldn’t see the words through my tears. This book broke me in places and yes there was also plenty of smiles too at times. I just loved the characters in this book and how they all coped in their own way with what was happening with Kayla. This is a fantastic read and one I highly recommend. A massive five star read from me.

Where do I even start with this book? So captivating yet absolutely heartbreaking at the same time. I had to read parts in short stages just because I couldn't actually see due to the great big fat tears spilling from my eyes. Having a 15year old daughter myself I just couldn't comprehend being in the situation so utterly devastating. Written with such compassion and straight from the heart I didn't want it to end. This is not a book to read out in public unless you don't mind being a big snotty mess. Brooke Harris you are amazing
