This book is a story about forgiveness and loss and making peace with life. Carol and John have been divorced for more than twenty years. John is terminally ill and re-enters Carol’s life on their daughter’s 30th birthday. John’s final request is that Carol accompany him on the road trip they had planned decades ago but never took. Carol reluctantly agrees to go. The two week road trip allows Carol and John to examine themselves and each other, and to accept blame and responsibility in the tragedy of their life together. This was an enjoyable read, full of emotion, allowing the reader to see the dynamics that brought John and Carol together, as well as the reasons that broke them apart. You will smile, laugh, shake your head, and hold back a few tears while embarking on this road trip. Ultimately, you will enjoy the ride! Some of my favorite quotes from the book: “Nothing could ever fill the void left behind. The hollow shell of what once was whole would never fully recover.” I forgive you,” he said. “For whatever mistakes you made. I forgive you. It would mean a lot if you could forgive me.” “She was simply here, in the moment, coming to terms with the loss...” “Nobody ever sees everything. The world is a big place full of mystery. That’s what makes it amazing. Nobody ever sees everything, John.” “John had made his peace and exited on his terms. There was no other way she could imagine his life ending.” Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. |
Talk about a book hangover. This is one of those books that I had to take from because it was too much at times, Nevertheless,I persisted and it was definitely worth it! |

So good! I had to put it down! Yes Had to put down! extremely emotional read! cried so much, needed time to clear my sinuses !( though not why its titled, was left with quite less water in my tear ducts!) The blurb starts with: Carol Denman divorced her husband over twenty years ago and has never looked back. But on the day before their daughter’s thirtieth birthday, John barges back into Carol’s life with a request that threatens the fragile stability she has built. But Carol is also dealing with the loss of her second husband Tobias! As this story progresses the Author takes you on Carol & John's journey of why John makes this request! and its quite a Journey to have to undertake ! Its a story of forgiveness of others and of yourself! It questions you ;Do you have any unfinished business? this is a very personnel journey of these two people that you are brought along every step of the way! One no one should have to take! though quite an emotional journey, its sweet and a hopeful journey too! Carols mother in-law and family!! wow such an incredible show of support, help and break that Carol needed at this part of their journey! though this has an epilogue, and was not really a cliffhanger ! I wanted more from Carols continued journey, that there was more to tell ( subtle hint to the Author) ;o) I highly recommend her Stonehill Series! Was given an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review ! |
Thank you for the opportunity to read this. I will be posting a full review to Goodreads, Amazon, and Instagram. |
Absolutely adored this book. I felt I lived every minute of the journey. So sad but ultimately uplifting as well. |
This was such a wonderful book. The rollercoaster of emotions and the storyline. It was told very well. Would like to read more from this author. |
A sincere thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for providing me an ebook copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. I enjoyed this story very much and felt like I knew each character personally due to the description of them. I enjoyed the storyline. This is not my usual genre but in this instance I am extremely pleased and grateful for opening up my mind to something totally different. Thanks again. |
I had a hard time connecting to the characters in this book. The writing was good, but I lost interest after the first half. |
I am a bit lost for words after reading this book. I certainly was not expecting to be crying so much at the end. You can feel the loss that Caroline suffered with every page that is turned. I could also feel the pain that John was going through. How far would you go to help someone that ruined your life? Can you truly forgive? |
Carol and John have been divorced for years, neither of them able to make peace with their young daughter's death. Each is surviving but still struggling with the memories, grief, and guilt. So it comes as a surprise when John shows up at Carol's door with a most unusual request. Enjoyable story, made me ask myself how strong I’d be in a similar situation. |

Thank you for the opportunity to read this book, it was very enjoyable. I found the plot line engaging and the characters believable. I have not read anything by this author before but will do in the future! I will be recommending this book to friends and family. |
This book was highly emotional, thought provoking, and oh so good. Grab a box of tissues because you will definitely need it. Many thanks to Pink Sand Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion. |
I read this book from cover to cover and never felt connected to it, either through the characters or the storyline. I don't understand exactly why, but that's the way I feel. Thank you to NetGalley and Pink Sand Press for the opportunity to read and review this book. |
Marci Bolden's emotional book A Life Without Water is a book about relationships - the ones you have with a partner, with a child, and with yourself. While Carol had closed the door on her first marriage, when John comes back into her life, incredibly sick, with a request, she cannot say no. What happens from there is a journey that tests them both and the power of forgiveness. |
Grab your tissues before starting this amazing book. The story covers a difficult subject of disappointment, disillusionment, death , a search for forgiveness and acceptance , and finally forgiveness. Although a difficult subject to read about , the author has handled it with understanding and characters so well written that you have so much empathy for them. the book pulls on all your emotions from anger, to sympathy and finally acceptance with a well thought out and acceptable conclusion. Don't skip reading this book because of the subject matter, you may be able to accept death differently afterwards. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in return for a fair and accurate review |
Unfortunately, I didn't finish this book. I had high hopes for it, but it started slow and stayed that way. The opening pages, when he shows up at her office, were intriguing. Learning of their shared dead daughter was another raised eyebrow. But then we got into her new marriage, and bogged down with details about their past (though with no answers about how their daughter died). They were supposed to go on a road trip together, but I was quite far into the book and they were still only talking about it. Her attitude toward him was understandable in the beginning, but quickly grew annoying. By the time I started reading that he was being discharged, I had lost interest and decided to move on to another book. |
This book was so emotional, it will tear at your heart strings. The author makes this book an emotional journey. I couldn't stop thinking about this book. |
A Life Without Water by Marci Bolden was a book that quickly drew me in. Reading this book was heart-wrenching for so many reasons; the relationship between Carol/Caroline and her ex-husband John, is realistic. Not only does Bolden explore life after loss, she also examines relationships on so many levels. Whilst reading this novel I found myself loving and hating Carol and John at different points, but only because they were written in such a realistic manner; these characters are flawed and imperfect, and these imperfections are what made me care about them as a reader (enough so to cry several times!). Additionally, i really loved the relationship that Carol had with her mother-in-law, Mary, and her family. There was something so comforting about the way this family was written that I found myself wanting to be a part of their family as well. Overall, I truly adored this novel. It was definitely one that made me think and reflect upon my own life, marriage, and family. I look forward to reading more works by Marci Bolden in the future. |
This is a story full of life, loss, regrets, grief, pain, hatred, forgiveness and many many “aha” moments. Caroline and John were married. One tragic moment destroyed their lives forever. She left him in the middle of the night and started another life somewhere else. Many years later John finds her. He wants to take their daughter on a vacation he promised her 24 years ago and he wants Caroline to go with him. Will she choose to go on this journey with a man that she has HATED for so many years? This book was fantastic but not a book I would normally read. Nevertheless, it left me emotionally drained. I ugly cried MANY times! Reading this book was like watching a movie playing in my mind but more real. It was like I was in the RV with them. I felt their anger, laughter, sadness, tears and every other emotion they went through. Believe me when I say that they went through them ALL. Such a sad, BRILLIANT and EMOTIONALLY draining story! |
