Poldark is an amazing show, but the books have all the details and depth that will captivate your soul!

Another fantastic book in the Poldark saga. I wasn’t sure how a setting outside of Cornwall would be, but this was just as engrossing as previous books.

Ok so by now we are pretty far into the series and I love all things Poldark!! Winston Graham is a wonerful writer and he knows Poldark in and out. His writing style is worderful. My recommendation is to read the books before watching the series. Historical fiction at it's best. And wether it is a character that I love or hate I do it with all my heart in this series. Poldark never gets boring. I have never thought to my self when is this going to end. It just keeps getting better.

First line: It had been raining without a stop for four days when Demelza Poldark saw a horseman riding down the valley.

Summary: In the eleventh book in the Poldark saga war appears to be over between England and France but it is a restless peace. Ross is called to Paris as an observer and report back to the British government about the lay of the land. However, while the Poldark family is enjoying a holiday in Paris Napoleon returns from Elba. Once again war has broken out in Europe leaving Ross a prisoner and his son Jeremy on the battlefield. As tensions rise the Poldark family hopes that life will one day go back to normal.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this story. I will be sad when I finally read the last Poldark book because I have enjoyed their saga in the Cornwall countryside. When the story started veering away from Ross and Demelza I was a little disappointed but as I have gotten to know the other characters it has gotten better. I loved some of the little side stories like Music Thomas and Katie Carter. It was a sweet little aside. There were several sad bits and some that made me happy. I love how Graham writes. He really gives the people of Cornwall come to life. I am excited and sad to see how he finishes off the series in the final book, Bella Poldark.

FYI: This is the eleventh of twelve books in the Poldark series.

Ever read a book and then feel bad that you don't feel bad at all when a character dies? I won't say who, but one of the losses in this book actually made me happy. (How very sadistic.)

I have really enjoyed reading this series, and now that I am almost at the end, I wonder what I will replace it with after this. I have come to feel like these characters are part of my life, and that what happens to them also happens to me. Isn't that a sign that it is a great book series? I think so.

Watching the continuing growth and struggles of Ross and Demelza's children in this book was at times humorous, sometimes heartwrenching and always interesting. As much as I'm looking forward to reading the final instalment, I am taking a few days to let the happenings of this book settle in first.

If you have been following this series, this is a crucial book that you don't want to miss. If not, then what are you waiting for? Start reading the series!

"The eleventh novel in Winston Graham's classic Poldark saga, now a major TV series from Masterpiece PBS.

Cornwall 1815

Demelza sees a horseman riding down the valley and senses disruption to the domestic contentment she has fought so hard to achieve. For Ross has little option but to accept the summons - and travel to Paris with his family, as an 'observer' of the French armed forces.

Parisian life begins well with an exhilarating round of balls and parties. But the return of Napoleon brings separation, distrust and danger to the Poldarks...and always for Demelza there is the shadow of the secret she does not even share with Ross.

In his Poldark series, Winston Graham explores the complications of love lost and the class struggle of early 19th-century England with a light comic touch. The Twisted Sword is followed by the twelfth book in the Poldark series, Bella Poldark."

For that post Poldark Season Five fix...

**This review actually refers to five books in this series: Stranger From the Sea, The Miller's Dance, The Loving Cup, The Twisted Sword & Bella Poldark**

I really have no clue what rock I was living under....I have no excuse. But, up until recently, I had no idea the Poldark series on television is based on a series of books! I love sweeping historical family sagas. I have no earthly clue how I missed this one! Rectifying the situation immediately!

There are 12 books in the Poldark Saga, written by Winston Graham from 1945-2002. The books are set in Cornwall, starting with Ross Poldark in 1783 and ending with Bella Poldark in 1820.

It's official -- I love this series! And I'm reading my way through all of the books before I watch the television series. I have a rule that before I can watch a film or television adaptation, I have to read the books first. Then I'm acquainted with the characters and can see what they changed/added/kept true to the original, etc. There are actually two Poldark television series. One from BBC in the 1970s that serialized the first seven books. And then the newer series that started in 2015. There have been five seasons of the new show. I can't wait to watch it! Still reading my way through the books first...and enjoying every page!

The four books listed here are books #8-12 of the series. I had review copies of all 5 novels and read them cover to cover. Binge read them, to be honest. I love the characters...the setting....the history. I had to stop periodically and look some things up as I'm not familiar with the time period or history of Cornwall at all. The one problem with reviewing books is that I'm under a deadline. With historical fiction or family sagas, I like to take my time and let the story sink in and savor the characters. But with five books to read, and not having read the first books in the series beforehand, I was a bit lost in names, places, etc. The story was enough to carry me through! I loved every book!

I'm backtracking now and reading the series from the start....and I will re-read these books when I come back around to them. I will have an even better understanding of the characters and history during my second reading! And then I can watch the television show. I'm curious which books it has already covered and which ones are upcoming -- whether it stays true to the books or goes off course, etc.

Great books! I highly recommend this series to any readers who enjoy historical fiction, family sagas, and just history in general!

Love, love, love! :) Here are some extra exclamation points in case I did not make it clear that I enjoy this series: !!!!!!!!

**I read review copies of these novels from St Martins Press via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.)

The Twisted sword is a part of the beautifully written Poldark series. I do not think words would do the Poldark series justice. The prose is stunning and the story is captivating. The romance and ambiance is truly stunning

A marvellous book ... as indeed are all in the Poldark saga. This one, however, brought me to tears. Ross is asked to go to Paris to report on the political situation, and takes Demelza and their two younger children with him as 'cover'. After a glorious start, the situation quickly changes when Napoleon is on his way back to Paris, and Demelza must decide whether to flee or wait for Ross who is in the midst of the army. I don't wish to give spoilers, but there are some sad events in this book, and for the reader who has followed the Poldark family over these 11 books so far, one of them at least will come as a grave blow. Only one more book to go in the series, sadly for us avid readers.
Many thanks to the publisher for a review copy.

I just couldn't get into this book. I wanted to. I love the series (although as with many long series, it's gotten a bit dry lately) but I just don't love this book. I pushed through and read it, hoping it'd change my mind but it just never did. It's worth reading as it answers some questions, continues the story and acts as a bridge between the other books. But it just felt more lifeless and as if it was just plodding along filling in time until it ended.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't know if I would love this book- Ross and Demelza find themselves in Paris instead of at Nampara (which is one of my favourite "characters"). However, I still rather enjoyed this instalment of the Poldark series! I'm not a military history buff, so I wasn't as interested in Waterloo as other readers might be. Much of the book is still spent on the Poldark clan, though! A wonderful continuation of the Poldark saga!

The Twisted Sword by Winston Graham is the 11th book (next to last) in the Poldark series.

While I have read these books out of order and had already read the last book before this one, I was still on the edge of my seat during this entire novel. I feel as if I have so much invested into these characters, that I am delighted along with them when there are heartwarming moments, and fearful and sad when things are going awry.
This is an action-packed, heart-stopping installment, as Ross and Demelza are in the thick of it in Paris, France along with members of their family. Some of the stunning twists left tears in my eyes. After all that I have read with this series, Mr Graham knows how to stimulate the senses. It is an art unto itself. I learned much more about Napoleon and Waterloo in general because of these books. I am glad I invested my time into reading these 12 novels. Truly amazing.

5/5 stars

Thank you NetGalley and St Martin’s Griffin for this ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.

I am posting this to my GR account immediately and will post to my Amazon, Bookbub, and B&N accounts upon publication.

I have always adored the Poldark books having read them as a teenager. This continues the story and was thoroughly enjoyable.

I remember the series back in the 1970’s and loved it then. As a teenager I thought I had read all the books in the Poldark series but, it seems not. Yipeeee! The new BBC version is every bit as good but the books are better. If you cannot wait for the next series then this release of four books will definitely fill the gap.
