This was an beautiful tale of witches, werewolves, queer love and the magic of friendship. The art is gorgeous, the plot is exciting and the characters are relatable. I'd been looking forward to reading it for a long time and I wasn't disappointed!

This was the cutest most magical and adorable graphic novel ever. The art, the story, the characters. They were all so amazing.

The story picks up almost immediately in a bookshop, a magical bookshop, so I was immediately hooked. We have our family of witches, they are funny, loving, and so diverse. (wlw = witches loving witches) Then Tam, our local enby werewolf, comes back into their lives and things start to happen. I loved loved loved how pronouns were discussed in this story. It just flowed so nicely.

The actual plot of this graphic novel was also done really well. The story continued to progress nicely at a good pace, and I was aware of where the plot was going, but I was still thrown back by the twist. This is probably one of the best endings to a graphic novel I have ever read, because everything was addressed and it in no way felt rushed.

Really, I just loved this a lot and I really hope we get more stories from these characters. (I'm begging for a Nanas prequel.)

The ARC of this book was provided to me by the publisher via Netgalley in return for an honest review.

This book! This book guys I have no words for quite how much I loved it. It has all of my favourite things from queer rep to found family to witchcraft it feels like it was tailored with me in mind. This has just the right balance between the action packed plot and the cute romance which develops over the course of the book, with neither of them overpowering the other!

I cannot wait to get my hands of a finished physical copy of this in October and force it on everyone I know.

This was the cutest thing I've read in a really long time. I loved all the characters and the diversity of them! There's a hard of hearing MC, a non-binary MC, and LGBTQ+ romance in it.

Thank you netgalley for letting me read this ahead of time and giving my honest review.

A young witch and a werewolf rediscover each other and their love for each other enables them to combat a common enemy.

I enjoyed reading this. The artwork is bright and blends in nicely with the supporting text. The story combines magic, adventure and love in a hopeful way and the main characters have a challenge before them which they respond to together.

The characters in the story are diverse which is refreshing and actually enhances the storytelling. Tam is a werewolf and Nova a witch and they were childhood friends. When Tam left their home town Nova tried to find them but she couldn't and she has missed her friend.

When Nova finds a white werewolf in the nearby forest she realises it is Tam, and all the feelings she once had return. Tam has never felt at home since leaving their hometown and they are grateful for the welcome given by Nova and her grandmothers, but there is darkness afoot and a demon on the loose. Nova, Tam and the grandmothers must work together to defeat this danger and the people behind it.

This is a lovely story, beautifully told with lovely artwork.

I don't read graphic novels often, but I'm so glad I gave this one a chance!
Firstly, the art style of this is insanely cute and gave me a whole lot of warm, fuzzy feelings. I was in awe of the obvious talent shown throughout the whole story. There was also so much diverse character design and each character looked like someone you could imagine passing in the street. You can tell that lots of readers will be able to find something of themselves in this comic.
The plot is another thing that gave me fuzzy feelings. For my personal taste, it had a perfect balance of romance, family life, and action. I adored the relationships that the characters had with each other. The romance was lovely to read and the relationships with family and friends were heartwarming and humorous.
Also, can I just say that the forest spirit animals in this book stole my heart. The amount of adorableness is unreal. I want them all as pets.
In all honesty, I genuinely cannot think of anything that I disliked about Mooncakes, so I'll definitely be wanting to get my hands on a physical copy when I can.

Mooncakes is a cute and witchy graphic novel that follows main characters, Nova and Tam, as they work together to defeat evil in their hometown. It touches on a lot of themes of the hardships of growing up, actually finding home, and tough family dynamics.

The illustrations are gorgeous, the colors are vibrant and really evokes feelings of fall. They're whimsical and there are a few pages that I would love to hang up on my walls as posters. I can't wait to see the final physical product in October!

I found some of the dialogue quite juvenile, however, and there were a lot of aspects to the story that I felt were underdeveloped. The characters really liked to just not talk about things that they found were tough to talk about and that kept me from learning almost any backstory about who they really were. I would definitely like to see more stories within this world, though, as it was a very captivating story.

I have seen this book around in the book blogging community, and I am also looking for more comics to read, so I decided to check it out for myself. This graphic novel is a cute ya book about magic, witches and werewolves, but it also had some great representation in it. Tam is a non-binary character who is Chinese-American and Nova is hard of hearing and also Chinese-American. Also Nova lives with her two grandmothers so that was cool to see. Everything is not made to be a big deal and normalizes everything so that made it so great to read about. There is one line where Tam corrects someone about using "they" pronouns and then that is the end of the conversation, so I loved that!

The romance in this one is pretty cute too. It's kind of a second chance...I would argue, but also a friends to lovers romance, and that is one I really enjoy. I also loved Nova's nanas who so knew what was going on and were totally there for it. I love those women!

The plot of this one deals a lot with magic, as Nova and her nanas are witches. I loved the world in this one where witches are doing witch jobs and it is a completely normal thing. Tam is a werewolf and there is something funny going on with them, but Nova and her family want to help them to figure it out. We find out who the big bad is in this one and it's so devastating to Tam. I really felt for them!

I liked that this one is a complete story, so it's not a graphic novel that I will have to try to remember about to read the rest of the story. I think there definitely could be another one about Tam and Nova's next adventures but I did like that this was a complete and digestible story in one sitting.

I really loved the color palette in the artwork on this one. It just gave it this soft and calming feel when I was reading each panel. I don't know if that's the right way to describe it, but that's how it made me feel.

If you are looking for a fun ya graphic novel about witches, magic and a little bit of first love, I definitely recommend this one.

*I received an eARC copy of this book via Netgalley and the publisher Lion Forge. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

That was SO good and so awesome. The artwork in this is absolutely phenomenal.
I love the magic, the werewolves, the friendships, and the fact that this is so fantastical.
I loved the story line, too, it was captivating, compelling, and had me hooked from the first page.
I can't wait to get a physical copy of this to see what the finished artwork is like.
This is easily one of my favourite graphic novels of all time.

5/5 stars

This story was so adorable. It has a little bit of everything from magic
, witches, werewolves, amazing friendships to great representation. I loved the main characters so much. Nova and Tam are so adorable and OTP goals. Loved their banter. Loved Tatiyana and the grandmas. The illustrations are stunning. The colors so bright and vivid. I loved every minute of this beautiful story and how it unfolded. For a graphic novel I never felt rushed or that it was missing something. I also loved the introduction by the authors about their own friendship and how this graphic novel came into existence from their experience. I read this entire graphic novel in one sitting with the biggest smile on my face. This is such a beautiful and powerful story and one that everyone should read. Can’t wait to see what the authors do next.

I'd have say, this graphic novel, gave me all the feels. From witchcraft to villians to a protagonist who is quite brave. I love the obvious connection between Nova and Tam. I'd recommend this to any one who loves a little magic and love in their life.

This book is about two main characters, Tam and Nova: childhood friends who reconnect when Tam comes back to their hometown. Tam is a werewolf and Nova is a witch. As they reconnect, they also work together to figure out who or what has summoned an evil entity out in the woods. It's going to take a tight-knit, powerful group to figure out who's causing trouble and how to stop this stranger's nefarious plans.

This was SO. ADORABLY. SPOOPY! All of the characters are fully fleshed out, and the friendships and found family are believable and heartwarming. There are two kick-ass grandmas, an enchanted forest, and an atmosphere that (if you read this ARC before it releases in October) will have you yearning for the fall season.

I loved the artwork and the color palette: mustard yellow, chocolate brown, terracotta orange, and eggplant purple are the dominant colors and add to the fall atmosphere of the story. I love how the magic was portrayed, and I loved how the panels were structured (and deconstructed?) throughout the narrative.

I learned about Chinese culture through this narrative, as well. I googled the significance of mooncakes because there's a section where Nova's family celebrates the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (Wikipedia had an informative article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mooncake). In case any non-owned voices reviewers like me also didn't know: mooncakes are important to this festival because it's for "lunar appreciation and moon watching" (quoted from Wikipedia).

This book celebrates the magic of autumn, friendship, and (found) family. I highly recommend this graphic novel!

This graphic novel was so sweet! That’s the best way to describe it; the art style, the characters, the story were all super sweet! We follow childhood best friends Tam and Nova as they reunite to rid their town of a demon. Tam is a non-binary werewolf and Nova is a hard-of-hearing queer (unlabelled) witch....and they maybe fall in love?! This is my first time reading about a HoH character in a young adult novel, and while I’m not able to personally comment on the accuracy, it appeared respectful. I will definitely recommend this graphic novel for anyone looking for a quick and easy read with important themes and diverse characters and stories, and I’ll definitely check out more from this author in the future!

For fans of Nimona, Lumberjanes and The Backstagers.

Mooncakes is adorable, heartwarming, and a joyous graphic novel. I’m happy to have read this diverse read, which has Chinese Americans characters, a non-binary character, and a character who is hard of hearing. The art style is wonderful and I enjoyed the variety of color. Mooncakes portrays a great, unconventional family that has a lot of love for each other. Nova’s grandmother’s are the best! Tam and Nova were so cute together. I really liked seeing a strong, healthy relationship like Nova’s and Tat’s friendship.
I wish there had been more exposition and backstory given. I would have loved to have seen Tam and Nova’s relationship develop more. Also, I wish we could have seen more of their friendship as kids, since that’s when their connection starts.
Overall, this reminded me a lot of all the fairytale movies I watched as a kid. It’s a nice, fun, and cute read :)
