Extremely gritty, this takes you down into the dark heart of Glasgow indeed. Perhaps too gruesome for my tastes and a little chaotic in plot and pacing. However, an engaging read.

I tried picking this up multiple times but it was a little too hard-boiled for me. The language and the lingering descriptions of certain things made me uncomfortable.
It is not the kind of book I usually pick up but after seeing a few popular reviews, I wanted to try. Unfortunately, I could only get to 40% before I had to give up.
It is an interesting concept and a dark one but not for the faint hearted like me. I was unable to read it fully and therefore cannot really write a review on social media for it

I absolutely loved this. Dark, gritty, atmospheric. A taut, compelling police procedural. I really hope there are more to come in this series.

Glasgow, 1969. The worst winter in years. The city lives in fear of an evil killer nicknamed The Quaker. DI Duncan McCormack, a promising young detective from the Highlands, is brought in to work the case, but as an outsider he’s less than welcome. This case is the one that will make or break Duncan - not just his career, but personally, too.

This is referred to as noir and I totally see why. It was so moody. I learned a lot about the place and time. I feel like this has been under the radar and that’s really too bad because it was just excellent. Highly recommend for fans of mysteries/police procedurals who done mind a little grit. Absolutely loved Duncan and hope I get to see more of him.

A stunning well written historical crime novel much like his father. I’ve read 70 books this year. Top 5 crime novel. If you enjoy police procedurals this is a wonderful edition. Waiting for more soon.

It's not often I'm drawn into a mystery. But a mystery dealing with a serial killer, cop politics and Glasgow streets brought to life with a dash of history thrown in, and I'm strapped in for the ride. A good thing, too, because the end gets mighty twisty.

Glasgow, 1969 and DCI George Cochrane and his team have been investigating 'The Quaker' case. The deaths of three young woman with no discernible motive or connection to each other. With no suspects D.I. Duncan McCormack is brought in to access the situation and recommend closure of the case. But another victim is discovered.
An interesting and enjoyable well-written crime novel, with some fascinating characters. A very good solid start to this new series. I look forward to the next.

The Quaker by Liam McIlvanney is a murder mystery. The detectives and investigators of Glasgow play "catch me if you can" with bible verse driveling John for the rape and murder of three young women. The way the author allows the girls to speak commands more intensity to the narrative. There is tension amidst the investigators because of the careless and the unsystematic handling of the case. And so, something else ensues.

The ending was clever, and I enjoyed reading this book. I intend on reading more of McIlvanney's work. Thank you Europa Editions for the advanced reader's copy.

A crime thriller set in the 1960's. A serial killer is on the lose on the streets of Glasgow. The police have no clues and soon the body count begins to rise. Enter DI McCormack a loner and he has been drafted in to get results. His new team are not happy and at times confrontational but he needs to catch this killer and time is running out. A slow burner and too much time was spent on the past. An okay read but saying that I am sure other readers will enjoy it more just not for me.
I would like to thank the author, Europa Editions World Noir and Netgalley for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
