An excellent book! The first novel I have read by this author Deborah Lucy and I will certainly obtain her other ones. It features Detective Inspector Temple who is searching for a missing fourteen year old China Lewis. It keeps the reader enthralled until the final pages and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery thriller.

Fantastic and addictive. Couldn't stop reading. This is a new author for me but I will definitely be looking out for more from them in the future!

A fast paced crime thriller which had me hooked from page one, I just had to keep on reading. Atmospheric, gripping, scary and a real page turner. This book kept me stuck to the edge of my seat and tapping my kindle faster and faster. Another new author for me and definitely one to watch. Almost five stars and highly recommended.
I would like to thank the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

Book two follows on the same theme as book one, with Temple's past coming back to catch him, whilst he also has to investigate the case of missing girl.
Since the last book Temple has been relegated back into uniform, hence being given the missing child case, and is even more hated by his boss and colleague. There is also a lot more going on in his personal life, which really adds to the story and brings the character to life more.
Overall this is turning into a brilliant series, which I can't wait to read more of.

There is little I enjoy more than a good police procedural and this is a great example of the genre. I love the main character DI Temple who regularly clashes with those with authority over.him but is loved and trusted by his fellow officers. This is the 2nd title in the series but it can easily be read as a stand alone which I did.I have since downloaded the previous book and look forward to reading it.

This is the second book in the series, but I read it as a stand-alone. For the followers, I would seriously advice against this. I realized later that by reading this book, I had inadvertently read major spoilers of the first book in the series.

While reading this book, I felt that if there was checklist for an author to write a book, this book had it all.

Dos and Don'ts of writing a book in mystery and thriller genre:

Do:

1. make is fast paced. check
2. make the lead a rule breaker (who doesn't love bad boys?) check
3. make the lead lonely, with a wrecked home life (that is completely, totally their fault.)
check
4. make the lead a b*stard in every way other than in their professional life (because how else will you show that the lead was married to his/her work?) check
5. depict violence in graphic ways (because throwing the words rape and human-trafficking and murder just doesn't cut it anymore.) check
6. write from a killer's point of view (because why shouldn't the readers know how sick they are?)
check
7. write from a multiple point of view (when you have already named the killer, how else would you confuse the reader and make them feel they are reading a mystery?) check
8. throw is some personal drama (because missing kids and serial killers hold nothing against angst filled wives.) check
9. pit any and all obstacles against the lead, including senior policemen (how else is the lead supposed to prove himself/herself?) check
10. conjure up multiple villains (because one villain and a single mystery was in old times of Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes.) check

If I had to suggest some Don'ts, they would be not to include spoilers of the first book and not to introduce the killer by his name from the very beginning.

The over-exaggeration and cliches aside, this was a well written book. To be totally fair, if I hadn't read so many similar books I would have given this a higher rating. But even then, it was a fairly nice read and I enjoyed reading the book.

I do wish that Temple was portrayed as a better man in his domestic life. But other than that, he was well written character. The unfortunate thing was, that though so many characters were introduced, most of them were shown in a negative light. Except for Temple. And even his 'goodness' is debatable. It just seems too pessimistic a view.

In conclusion, I would rate this book 3 stars and hope to read more from this author in future.

Really enjoyed this novel. The writing flowed and the characters were depicted very well. Couldn't wait to find out what happens next.

A very dark police prodecural read, a detective whose career hangs in the balance, a marriage that is over sees him living in a cottage with a son he was not aware of and his au pair.

A report of a missing girl stors up an investigation that leads to a trafficking ring with a police officer at the heart of it

A really good book, fast paced, with an interesting storyline and good twists.
Well written detective story with strong characters, hard to put down.

ARC received through NetGalley. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.

I really like DI Temple. He knows that he has made mistakes in his personal life and the higher ups are trying to manipulate things so he is fired or forced to resign but he is tenacious in his battle to find the missing girls. The only reservations I have is with the title as this really refers to the side story. Thank you Netgalley for offering this book for review. I now have a new author to follow.

#2 in the series "starring"DI Temple, sidelined due to a death in custody, he is not in the best place.I can say it is better if you have read the 1st one but it can be read as a standalone, but if the first is read it places the background, so you can understand more.
A missing 14 year old whose family don't have much interest in whats actually happened, a slate of homeless people winding up dead...these are the main strings of the story.Deborah Lucy has brought sex trafficking and homelessness in big dollops and I actually like the realism used. There was the expected twists and turns and there is a cliffhanger ending, which gives us hope about another book #3! Enjoyed this book and eagerly await the next one!

I love Joffe books and when I began to read Dead of Night I expected a police procedural/crime novel.  What I was not expecting (to my pleasant surprise) was a dark and alarming thriller that plays on every parent's worst nightmare in the most disturbing manner - and I loved every uncomfortable minute of it.

Initially the novel introduces quite a few different perspectives and events which take a little concentration to keep up with but once the story gets a few chapters in - it becomes and intense and thrilling read that is difficult to put down.  Told through a variety of characters, the story contains heartbreaking points of view from the children and their parents coupled with some very sinister and nightmarish ones from a killer and various other less desirable characters.  The writer uses her experience of working with missing people cases to create a harrowing tale that is excruciating reading but needs to be told.

DI Temple is an intriguing character with a past, a complicated personal life and a thirst for the truth and justice.  He's a character I fully enjoyed reading about and cannot wait to read more.

Not for the feint hearted but if you like your crime thrillers on the dark side then this one is for you.

With one serial killer on the loose and three missing girls, this book reeks of thrill. DI Temple has his work cut out for him when he goes to review a missing person report and finds out there is a lot more to uncover.
Deborah Lucy lucidly brings the serious real-life issues of human trafficking, drug smuggling, exploitation, forced prostitution and police corruption. The novel, Dead of Night, for most sections followed the concept of telling rather than showing and it went well with the narrative.
The only flaw I found was that the character Katya didn't have any significant importance in the narration even though her part was detailed I couldn't find the reason, other than a different opinion, for her to be showcased in the novel.
I, honestly, loved the book and I would recommend it to those readers who enjoy a good real-life thriller. The novel didn't showcase overwhelming emotions, but it did keep me at the edge of my seat.

Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher, Joffe Books, for sending me a free copy of the book.
I enjoyed the book a lot and I would surely want to read more works by the author☺ Also, I have written a detailed review on my blog.

Fourteen-year old China Lewis has gone missing. DI Temple is assigned to the case. He has matured a lot in this book from the first in this series. I like the way the book explains some of what makes him tick. Hopefully in future stories, we will learn more about him and especially the circumstances of his mother's murder.

What Temple soon discovers is that more young girls are going missing as well. What seems to be going on is human trafficking. While not one of my favorite subjects, the plot is done well and the writing has improved over the first novel.

All in all, it is an engaging read and held my interest until the end of the story.

I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this good book for me to read, enjoy and review.

This is book 2 in the Detective Temple series by Deborah Lucy and although it works very well as stand alone it would be better to read the series in sequence as more detail of events referred to in this book is given.

Temple is in the bad books with his superiors. He is under investigation by IPC following the death of a young man and has also been screwed over by his DCI and also a member of his team. He has been banished to work alone investigating missing persons.

He also has big personal issues. A child turned up who is the result of a short fling many years ago. Left motherless Ben only has Temple to care for him and this has destroyed what was left of his fragile marriage to Leah. He has had to choose between his daughter and his son and since the alternative for Ben is life in care Temple has stepped up to the plate and committed himself to caring for Ben.

As Temple begins investigating missing persons his first case is China, a teenager, but there is a problem. Is she really missing? Her friend says so her mother and brother say no she isn't missing. Temple suspects teenagers are being used to run drugs and sets about trying to find out what is going on. But he has to do it alone.

This book moves at a faster pace than book 1 and is a really gripping storyline that I found difficult to put down. Full of twists and turns it is a book that will appeal to readers of Police Procedurals.

Wow! Perhaps the subject matter is uncomfortable but the storyline and the powerful twists and turns are better than a dodgem car ride. Characters are created with great skill and the background knowledge needed to proceed to write in this genre is so sound and clear. Could not put it down!

Deborah Lucy writes a well plotted and fast paced crime read featuring DI Temple, a man with a traumatic history when as a young boy he discovered his murdered mother, a case that remains unsolved.. Set in Swindon, Wiltshire, Temple's professional career has descended into a nightmare, his superiors are less than fond of him and he faces a disciplinary process, and his personal life could best be described as he undergoes divorce proceedings. He lives with his au pair and his 3 year old son, Ben. Amy reports the disappearance of her school friend, 14 year old China Lewis, and the more DI Temple finds out about her, including her alcoholic mother, the more worried he becomes as he frantically searches for her. Two other girls have gone missing, and Temple's case leads him to drug dealing, abuse, trafficking and police corruption. This is an intense read, that keeps your interest throughout. Many thanks to Joffe Books for an ARC.

Dead of Night will grab you from the first chapter and is entertaining. I could not put it down. Well written and interesting characters.

A book about misfits. From the police officers through to the girls, and boys, that are working a mules for the drug dealers. DI Temple has been sidelined at work, is being divorced by his wife and is settled into a cottage at the graveyard with his au pair and his son Ben.

I found this to be a very touching story - believable too.

I read a free advance review copy, this review is voluntary, true and my work.
