Really enjoyed the book--but I'm a longstanding fan of Vollmann's work and I'm not sure of the extent to which I was just going along with him because I love what he does with the language, or if I was really gripped by the story. I'd strongly recommend it to readers who aren't just fine with style over substance, but who are also willing to surrender themselves to a good writer for a LONG period of time even without guarantee of any kinda narrative payoff.
