I like Martha. She is strong and capable and so sweet. Frank is a protector and has such deep love. The story is unique and well written and the characters are very well developed. The writing is easy and flows gently. The suspense makes the story real and gives it life. This Is a very good book.

Martha Benson is rescued from a raging fire by the one man she never expected to see again, a man who miraculously parts the demonic wall of flames and leads them to safety. Frank Ellis once walked away from Martha to protect from his haunting connection to fire that he did not understand. Now that he’s found her again, he’s determined to harness his mystical power to win her trust and make her his own. In order to rekindle their love, Martha and Frank need to confront their fears and rise from the ashes of their pasts.

A cute, fiery story full of passion, suspense and gut wrenching emotions. Their attraction and their love for each other still stands strong even after twenty years which speaks to readers but their relationship is not so easy to resume considering their pasts and the obstacles that stand in the way which has lots of emotional turmoil flowing from the pages and pulling readers in and refusing to let go, especially since both Martha and Frank feeling are easily understood by the readers. Although a little on the short side, the plot is fast paced and full of suspense with secrets being revealed and an unknown enemy who also has an affinity for flames stalks Martha with ruthless intensity, adding danger and excitement to this deliciously steamy romance that readers can’t take eyes off of.

What a great imaginative story! A very cool twist to the “fireman romance” genre! Or should I say, a very HOT twist?

Although this is a rather short story, there was plenty of background on Frank and Martha to feel their connection. Enough drama to be interesting but the most entertaining was Frank’s abilities and how he handles it.

Definitely a must read for anyone who loves a good romance story!

I've read every book in the Blood of the Drakon series and enjoyed each one. So, when I saw this book on Netgalley, I jumped at the opportunity to read an arc for a promising new series with a phoenix! Thank you Beyond the Page Publishing for the opportunity. My thoughts in this review are given without compensation.

Frank and Martha were in love with each other in high school. Until Frank left without a word. Martha was left trying to put her heart back together and Frank did everything he could to protect the ones he loved...by staying away. Many years later, their paths cross and Frank cannot stay away anymore. But, at what cost?

I liked the story but felt it was a little rushed. I also thought it was very easy to determine the person behind it all. I think if the story had been longer the characters would have been more developed and would have packed a greater punch to this phoenix tale. The adult scenes in the book happened too quickly when considering the traumatic experience Martha had recently lived through. The author's writing had a nice flow and the story was clear and easy to understand. Overall, it wasn't a bad read, but I was hoping for more from the great synopsis.

A short and sweet second chance romance that brings together an emotionally hurt fireman (Frank) and the woman he walked away from to keep her safe (Martha). When he rescues her from the fire in her building, he sees a chance to bring peace back to his life. Will she be able to bring out the animal he is inside or will he allow his fears to push her away.

This sounded good but just wasn’t for me sadly, not my kind of read and I thought it would be.

Well, I really did try with this one. The blurb sounded awesome and read like something I would be very interested in reading. I gave up at 32%.
This was not the book for me.

This was a good but definitely quick read. Frank and Martha are thrown back together when Frank comes and rescues her from a fire. The story line had a lot of promise but I felt like it was rushed in order to keep it a novella and that part of the story was missing. I loved the concept for it and wished there had been more explored. The characters had me intrigued but like I said-it is very short and I was left kinda wanting something more. On a whole it wasn't bad though and I definitely was into the story line and wanting to know more about Frank. Here's to hoping there will be another book!

A fable and a fantasy novella with my favorite mythical bird.

This was a quick read. Ralph Ellis is a firefighter in Chicago with an uncanny ability to go into the most vicious of fires and rescue people through sheer gut instinct. Even his own brigade cannot figure it out but Ralph knows why...

"He knew fire intimately, knew it was a powerful entity to be respected. It called to him, sang for him, but most of all, it was in his blood."

This 'power' comes in extra handy when called to a building one afternoon where he rescues not only a woman about to perish, but it turns out to be the girl he left in high school some 20 years ago, his childhood love, Martha. To say they're both shocked to see one another again it an understatement. Martha still feels the after effects of having been left overnight by her true love and Ralph has never felt an ounce of what he felt for Martha with anyone else. When it turns out that the fire was not natural but targeted arson towards Martha, fearing the arsonist will come back to finish the job and Ralph's affinity to fire, he takes Martha into his care and his home. The big question still looms: why did Ralph abandon her overnight and disappear from everyone including his family. The answer lies within his very special relationship to fire and the fact that he is not a normal mere mortal, instead he is something much more and has spent his life in confusion, shame and fear over something he cannot grasp.

"And if he told them who he really was, what he was, they'd either try to kill him or lock him away. Neither was an option he was willing to entertain. No, he really didn't think the chief would understand if he told the man he was mythical phoenix and fire was his element."

As he gets closer once again to Martha, his big dilemma is how to tell her what he discovered all those years ago and will she still care for him if she finds out the freak he is.

The novella was kind of short for the subject matter and full character development but the idea of a modern day phoenix fighting fires was a unique and oddly touching one. Ralph's loneliness and shame is also tangible and affecting. But I would have liked to have seen a longer story so the pieces had time to meld together instead of rush.

Still and all, rather unusual.

This was an ARC in exchange for an honest review and the above is pretty much how I saw it.

3 Stars for an interesting premise with a deduction for just being a tad too short for me to fully latch on.

This little just over 100 page story packs a punch! It was spicy and hot and full of sexy things. But the main character of Martha could have been better. I really felt like she was just settling for Frank from the start of the story instead of really looking for love. This hint of urban fantasy with lots of spicy romance was one I won't soon forget. But I wished that Martha would have been a stronger woman. The pacing was great and the writing was easy to follow and I don't remember any plot points not getting tied up.

I enjoyed Rescue Me. Martha and Frank were interesting characters. The paranormal aspect made for a good story line. Both had a lot of feelings to deal with and past to overcome which was all interesting to read about. I would have liked to have had a longer book to see how all the details of their lives filled in.

I really enjoyed this book. Bbn I thought the story was written very well and the characters had great chemistry. I thought the author allowed me to be a part of this journey with great writing.

A very steamy story that I enjoyed a lot especially because it has a second chance romance. The mixed of hot love and paranormal elements are a great addition for a unique plot.
I want to read more books like this and will definitely read the previous in the series.

A flame literally burns bright in this short and steamy second-chance novella as fate deals its hand in leading firefighter, Frank back to his first love, Martha.

“...beneath all the anger and pain, love was still there.”

I really need to read more by N.J Walters as what I have read has been thoroughly enjoyable and Rescue Me keeps up that trend, bringing passion and the paranormal to a fast-paced storyline.

“He and the fire were one.”

The only downside to this story was its short length because I could have quite happily read a full length book centralised around these characters. I don’t know if this is the start of a series, but if it is, I’m here for it.

Rescue Me by new to me author N. J. Walters. I did enjoy the possible second chance at romance storyline. The male character being a fireman. Just the right amount of spicy content. What I wasn't crazy about was the fantasy element of fire and the male character that brought my rating down.

I am not even how to describe what I just read. The book said it was romance but it was more of a paranormal. I wish I knew that going in, because I was very confused for the longest time.

This was a sweet novella. I'm not usually a fan of paranormal love stories but I enjoyed this one very much. It was short, romantic and sexy.

Fast and furious. 3.5 Stars

Sometimes I love quick Novellas and when I see one that looks good, I always try to grab them. They are usually hot and steamy and perfect for a break in between reading larger novels.

I was looking forward to the story greatly. However, there were some parts that made it one that just made this one enjoyable rather than compelling.

I love the story premise but it was so short that in this particular book something seemed to be missing. I think it was the female lead, Martha. It seemed like she just settled for Frank while he was completely all in from the beginning.

Overall, the book is a good story and a very easy read. It has the spicy hot scenes we love, with a little bit of urban fantasy thrown in for some additional interest.

This one I really wanted a bit of a longer story to get a little bit more development. But overall a good choice for an afternoon break.

This was a quick reunion read for two teenage loves twenty years later. He is a firefighter and rescues her from a fire. He left all those years ago because he discovered something about himself. Not a lot on what that is, or why, but the story focuses on their relationship, and the attraction between them that flares, pardon the pun, back up again!

I would rate this novel 3 stars! It was short, quick and intense! I enjoyed reading from this author and would look for more of their work again!
