I thoroughly enjoyed The Rebel Bride. It was not only an entertaining read, but also an interesting one filled with knowledge about life during the Civil War era. The characters were great, very well-developed, and the plot was not at all predictable. Although the title hints at the likely conclusion, the journey to reach it was a long and winding one and very well-written. I also appreciated the Christian setting and the inclusion of Scripture.

McNear did such a great job of showing two sides of a story. I think we often see an opposing side as the "enemy" and forget that they, too, are just people. People who make mistakes just like us. This story was rich in history, and a welcome addition to this amazing series.

This is the first book in the Mayflower series that I've read and overall I enjoyed it. It was a quick and easy read and I enjoyed the historical backdrop.

I liked this book. There is bits of history but a lot of fiction. Pearl lost 3 of her brothers and now she is being asked to take care of her last brother and her Pa along with wounded soldiers that are fighting on the wrong side of the line. Pearl struggles with what is in her heart and what she wants to do. I think this book was really good and drew me in from the first pages until the last. Would recommend.

Pearl MacFarlane is given the responsibility of caring for severely injured Union soldiers in her home near Chattanooga, TN. At first, Pearl struggles with what she has been asked to do by her cousin because she herself is a Confederate and 3 out of her 4 brothers have been killed by the Union in other Civil War battles. Her faithful father reminds her to “love her enemies” and so despite her hesitations she puts her whole heart into nursing the soldiers that now take up all the available space she has in her makeshift hospital home. As time goes on, one amputee soldier, Joshua Wheeler, begins to have more than a patient/nurse relationship with Pearl. Despite their differing perspectives about the war, Joshua and Pearl’s friendship blossoms and is tested.

Civil War historical fiction books are always some of my favorites to read. I would recommend this book to others who enjoy reading books in the Civil War historical fiction genre. Furthermore, Civil War readers will appreciate learning Civil War tidbits in the author’s historical notes at the end of the book. This book is labeled as Christian fiction and I didn’t feel like it was overly preachy. The Scripture quotes were encouraging and good reminders about treating others with human decency even if you have beliefs that differ from other people. Overall, this book kept my interest and is one of favorites in the series.

An intricate and in-depth novel that does not shy away from the tragedies of war and the wounds it creates. I was spell-bound by this book, the setting, and the characters. Pearl and Josh made quite the pair as they work together and I enjoyed the way the romance burned slow and built steadily despite the circumstances. I cannot fathom this time in our country, but I found myself drawn into the drama and constant tension between the soldiers as they mend side by side. Wonderfully written and engaging with detail and descriptions that bring the story to life.

I just think this one was not for me, it is from a large series and maybe it was a mistake picking it up? I think its because where I live, and this is in the point of view of someone in the southern states. I just couldn't get into it.

The Civil War. A time discussed often, but only on the surface. Most often the stories of this period are told from two perspectives- one being the plantation owner who wants to keep slaves, the other a person from the North who is fighting to abolish slavery. The Rebel Bride is an in depth tale from very different points of view. Perhaps ones not many have thought about. Shannon McNear definitely did research, and left no fact buried. Historically accurate this novel could act as a sort of textbook. Romantically this book could cause a Southern Belle to swoon. All wrapped up in a neat package, this read is a gift to every reader who chooses to crack open the cover.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for the advanced copy of this story.

The Rebel Bride is a Christian romance novel by author Shannon McNear. The setting is during the Civil War (1863).

Joshua Wheeler is a POW. Pearl MacFarlane lost three brothers to the war. It was Pearl’s job to care for the wounded POWs. A job she did not want.

The Rebel Bride started out dry and it was a bit wordy. At first, I had a hard time keeping the characters straight. However, it didn’t take long for me to become enamored with the story. I read way past my bedtime. I just had to read what happened.

Could a Federal soldier and a Rebel actually be friends? I recommend The Rebel Bride to fans of Christian romance.

As in all of the Daughters of the Mayflower books I have read so far, I love it! Shannon McNear does a great job of picking up a story line from this time period and continuing on the lineage of our nations’s history!
Character development is great, and the plot line moves along at a great pace.

This was a fast-paced read, that I found I did not want to put down! The story was original and exciting with characters that were realistic and likable. It is everything you could want in a delightful stroll through the pages of a historical romance and more!

It takes courage to go against the norm, especially during the Civil war. The main character played the fine balance of both sides when she nursed a confederate and a union back to health. This book is a very interesting tale of the times.

A lovely story of loving your enemies. It had been a while since I read a civil war romance that I enjoyed as much as I enjoyed Shannon McNear's The Rebel Bride!

I found this to be a historically accurate story which I liked even more

Romance, clean, period; Christian faith elements a strong part of the novel. PG-13 due to violence and descriptive injuries.
Well drawn romance set in the South during the Civil War. Pearl, daughter of a family in Tennessee is forced to care for wounded US Federal soldiers by her Confederate officer cousin who is seeking her hand in marriage. This does have battle scenes, horror of war stories and attempted rape (it didn't get very far in the description though). Joshua, one of the wounded is drawn to Pearl as he recovers from losing his hand. The injuries, and historical setting, seemed so realistic. Gorgeous, lush, hurting, hopeful read that will linger long after you put it down. Pearl and Joshua's romance forbidden, but skillfully woven together into the novel, and loved how it resolved. They had many problems to face ahead, but well drawn attraction, kindnesses, and two beautiful hearts made this a perfect read. Strong side characters, and well drawn setting were an additional plus for me as I read this.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review, my opinions are my own.

The Rebel Bride #10 Daughters of the Mayflower by Shannon McNear

1863 Tennessee—the home of Pearl MacFarlane has become a hospital for wounded solders to both Rebel and Yankee. She tends to the soldiers with the Bible truth in her heart and actions: “If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in doing, thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head”. Even so, it is not an easy task, especially with the limited supplies and food; however, she cares for and feeds these wounded men while remaining unmoved to their cause—mostly. One of the wounded men, Joshua Wheeler, soon comes to mean more than a patient should. Can she keep her heart in tact or will she find herself with a difficult decision? Joshua has decisions of his own to make, but will he be able to carry out what he has planned? I enjoyed Pearl and Joshua’s story. A heartwarming story.
