I'm so in love with the new cover of Northanger Abbey. My first Austen novel was Pride and Prejudice, but I was excited to read more of her other novels. Northanger Abbey does not disappoint! Catherine is a really interesting character, and Jane Austen's humour and storytelling never fails to amaze me! |

Northanger Abbey is one of my favourite Jane Austen's and this new edition does it justice. I absolutely love the cover and think the new edition will appeal to younger and new readers, which is a brilliant thing. Thanks so much for the chance to read and review. |
I've never read any classic by Jane Austen but this was just so lovely. The cover is really pretty as well. I thought that the reading style would be difficult to read, given English is not my mother tongue and this is a classic, but I was very wrong. I'll definitely will be reading more of her in the future. Maybe I'll try Pride and Prejudice in the same edition? |
Its Jane Austin! Enuf said..happy to re-read this story with a new cover.. its perfect YA novel! Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for reader’s copy of this novel. |
This is Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' with a fancy new cover. I enjoyed re-reading the classic book and experiencing it again. The original story was unaltered when transferred to this book. |
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a reader in possession of a good taste, must be in want of more of Austen’s novels.” Especially after reading the one and only Pride and Prejudice. It is a novel that is not easily superseded. Published posthumously in 1817, this novel is the second Austen novel closest to perfection, though my heart is still settled on P&P. A concoction mixed by one of the most talented and romantic authors of all times: only this time, it involves a lot of sarcasm, clever and bittersweet remarks of the early 19th century England. Lo and behold for the only novel that can help get over the angst of finishing Pride and Prejudice for those craving for more. The Austenesque genius and wit present itself most elegantly in Northanger Abbey. A story so special with ordinary figures and characters that it is impossible to get attached to one. Do not expect a protagonist like Elizabeth here, so smart and down-to-earth but the core value here is the naïvety of our beloved Catherine, whose folly annoyed me to death at times. Henry Tilney, our know-it-all hero, drawn to her like a moth drawn to fire and keeps cultivating her about the ways of society and cunningness of people. The Thorpes however tortured me until the end of the novel, I still cannot believe how much more anyone can take of them. Two things physically pained me in this novel: I wish Catherine were smarter and more sophisticated and less dull; and I wish that there were more interactions between her and Henry. Their conversations were too few and gave most pleasure, it’s a pity we did not hear more of him. However, a must-read for Austen lovers and definite re-read for first-timers. |
jane austen is.... jane austen. she is my all time favourite writer so... maybe... my review might be biased. this is one of her lesser know novels but still worth reading in my personal opinion. |
Move over Pride and Prejudice, there's a new favorite in town! Northanger Abbey has everything that you love Jane Austen novels for: great portrayal of the 19th century English socialites, a beautiful country setting, and heaps of tongue-in-cheek social commentary about marriage and social expectations. And then, it has so much more. The story already starts off great, mocking the traditional set-ups of romance novels and breaking the 4th wall often. It is just page after page of Austen's brilliant humor and charming story-telling, wrapped up in a beautiful new edition. (Also, a bookworm heroine, who gets carried away with her imagination in conjuring horror scenarios? Relatable!) |
I've started reading classics recently, and I fall in love with this genre even more whenever I read a Jane Austen novel! 💜 This edition of Northanger Abbey is absolutely stunning. Kudos to the illustration team. I loved Northanger Abbey's storyline. The way Jane Austen drew the life of 17 year old Catherine and the things she imagined along the way were really interesting. The writing was a bit on the complicated side, but I grew used to it eventually. I love how this book was filled with humor but presented a different side of viewing society norms. Can't wait to read more of Jane Austen's works. ❤ Thanks to Netgalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange of an honest review. 💕 |
My first time reading Northanger Abbey and what a delight it was! We follow Catherine Morland as she enters the society of Bath and hijinks ensue. The Positives: This was the most overtly comical book by Austen that I have read, which I really enjoyed. It is a satire/pastiche on the Gothic romances prevalent in novels when Austen was writing and from the first lines, I had a smile on my face at the wry tone. The book is really self aware and comments on the value of novels as opposed to histories etc. which was very interesting. I also loved Mr. Tilney! The Negatives: There were a couple of story threads that I felt were left a little bit unfinished and I thought that the ending was a little bit rushed. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves a society romance with a comedic twist. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. |
I was expecting it to be a graphic novel or perhaps it includes illustrations but no - it's just a new edition with a new cover. I'm not going to write a long review about Jane Austen's writing since, well, she's JANE AUSTEN. I'm been a hardcore fan ever since the first time I read Pride and Prejudice. So I'm just going to say that the cover is pretty nice, and fans who are interested in collecting different editions may be interested in bringing a copy back home. |
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I love Jane Austen. I love her work. I am a self-proclaimed Janeite. I wrote my graduate thesis on Austen’s six major novels and a term paper on NorthangerAbbey. I have to admit, Northanger Abbey is my absolute favourite. The satire, the gothic, Austen’s humour and her ability to create a naïve character without making her annoying is quite the accomplishment. I adore Catherine’s evolution from a sheltered country girl to being thrown into the fashionable society of Bath. The characters in general are very rich, interesting and life-like. The attention to detail and commentary Austen provides is astounding and every time I read this story, I discover something new I had missed during my previous read. The jury is still out there on Mr. Tilney being the perfect leading man in an Austen novel, but for me there is no contest. He is perfect in a sense that his character is solid, unfaltering, he knows his manners and morals, and he knows right from wrong. The setting, Bath and then an old abbey, is perfect and really satisfies my delight in gothic storytelling. Austen’s writing is complex, but once you get used to it, you’ll find that it actually flows quite nicely. A word of caution, though, for all us speed-readers: take your time with her works, the experience will that much more satisfying and you will pick up on Austen’s incredible wit and sarcasm a lot easier. Overall, I’m going to stop gushing, because I can go on forever when it comes to Austen’s work. Northanger Abbey was her first finished novel, but not published until much later. It shows her lively youth, optimism and wit; the beginning of a marvelous, yet too short, writing career. I recommend this story wholeheartedly and hope you enjoy it as much as I did. |
I downloaded this book thinking it was a retelling or a graphic novel, but it's just the regular novel and I've read it and Austen never disappoints, that's all i have to say! :) |

I love Austen and this one is my all time favourite. Austen is at her wittiest and most scathing and offers up a fresh new look of what it might really be like to be a woman of this time. She paints us a glorious picture of her own views of her contemporaries which is witty but somehow also filled with pathos. |
One of my favorite Jane Austen novels! This new edition is lovely and belongs on any Austen fan’s shelf. |
I had requested this book because I thought to myself: I should maybe start reading a Jane Austen novel, no matter which one, it should be good. But then I found out that there must be a reason why I had not picked up one, because I simply cannot stand the writing style. It is just not for me, at all. I get lost, read a page at least five times, still drift off at the very same passage, and then just continue with the book and in the end have no clue what happened. I am just not patient enough to keep on reading. I understand and remember maybe about five passages from the book, the rest was a blur. Sadly not my type of book, just really boring, a lot of descriptions and just unnecessary extras. |

Jane Austen is one of my favourite classic authors and I love how she rips into the Gothic stereotypes in this parody novel. It's witty and clever in every way, making insight social commentary. Her writing just feels so unconventional and refreshingly modern, despite being written so long ago. |
Northanger Abbey tells the story of a young girl with a wild and dark imagination. When 17 year old Catherine gets invited to stay in Bath to spend time in society, she meets a host of characters who she spends much of her time with. Flirtations and misunderstandings occur, many Gothic novels are read, and engagements are enacted. On being invited to stay at Northanger Abbey by the handsome Henry Tilney, Catherine fantasised that she is about to walk into her own heroic and dark novel. Northanger Abbey is my favourite out of the Jane Austen novels I have read. I love the characters and the complex relationships that centre around money, class and societal expectation, all being navigated by a young, dreamy 17 year old who is ready for a romantic adventure. Catherine, although naive and childish in ways is also a wonderfully strong woman, who tries to forgo the unreasonable pressures of society. I have always found it wonderful the way that this book was written as a satire against the outrageous Gothic novels that were filling young minds at the time of writing, and yet it is it's own tale to fill that gap in a way. I personally took many recommendations from Catherine and Isabella, and now The Mysteries of Udolpho is one of my favourite books. Overall, if you want a step away from the wonderfully perfect stories of Jane Austen but also love her style, this is the book for you. While still holding to her usual themes of petty culture, society and romance, Northanger Abbey is in fact quite different from her other novels in it's setting and overall feel. |
Forever and ever an absolute favorite. The covers are extremely beautiful as well 😍 Thank you Netgalley and publishers for.providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review. |
I teach this title, so I was glad to see this nicely designed edition. I had hoped that there might be more illustrations in the text, but it works well as it is. I hope this modern cover can attract new readers to this classic. Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for a digital ARC. My opinions are entirely my own. |
