Into the Fire is the 5th book in the Orphan X series. Evan Smoak, known as Orphan X was a part of an off book black-op government sector that has recently shut down. As a personal way to atone for the sins he feels he committed during that time he re-invented himself as the Nowhere Man. As the Nowhere Man, he helps good people fix some series life or death issues they are having. All they have to do to pay him back is pass on his name and number to another good person in need of help.
Evan has decided the next person he helps will be his final mission. Max Merriweather is in trouble. His cousin Greg, gave him some information to pass on if he is murdered. As he tries to give documents to the reporter, he finds that she is also dead and now someone wants Greg murdered too. In steps the Nowhere Man.
I am a huge fan of this series and have read them all. You do not have to have read the entire series to pick up this exciting thriller and enjoy the fast paced roller coaster ride that is Evan Smoak. I highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my advance copy of “Into the Fire” by Gregg Hurwitz – for my honest review

Fast-paced, riveting suspense novel. Evan's human side comes out so much in this novel. You want him to succeed not only so the person he is helping gets out of the trouble they are in by no fault of their own, but also because you want to see Evan be able to have relationships with Joey, Mia and Peter and be free from having to hide behind the facades he has set up to protect himself. The twist at the end?? I can't wait to see what this brings about in the next book! A year to wait is way too long!!

Gotta tell you, I was concerned through the first half of the book. Having resolved so many plot threads in book 4, Out of the Dark, Into the Fire starts out seeming a bit lost. I began to fear this might be a last tie-up-the-loose-ends and end the series book. Wrong. I can not explain without giving away key plot elements. I will only say we wind through a few "Do you need my help" calls. Then things begin to pick up as new plot lines begin to form to replace plot lines terminated in Out of the Dark. The book ends with the familiar old bang, racing dialog, cheer for the hero, and a longing for the next installment to find out what happens next. To Orphan fans, I say you will not be disappointed. Just hang in through the first chapters knowing that it is all going somewhere you will like in the end. Into the Fire is another great read easily earning my 4 star rating.

Riveting, page-turning, fast-paced and captivating novel. Even though this book is the fifth in the Orphan X series, it is a great stand alone read, as it was the first Gregg Hurwitz book I have read. Into the Fire follows the "Nowhere Man", Evan Smoak, a government-trained assasin and now last resort of the truly desperate, help Max, the black sheep of his family and holder of the key to unravel the truth behind his cousin's brutal murder. A brilliantly crafted spiral of a story that follows Evan and Max through deeper layers of a conspiracy that led to Max's cousin's death, All is not as it seems as increasingly bigger players in the conspiracy are uncovered, with twists and turns until the great crescendo at the end.

Even though this is a good ways into an established series that I've never read before, I was able to easily catch up with what was important & get into the story. The characters were interesting and were engaging enough that I want to get the first books to see how they have developed over the couse of the series. Though there were a few predictable parts plot-wise, the overall story more than made up for it.

Another nonstop action page turner from Gregg Hurwitz! Love this series and Hurwitz’s style is fantastic. The characters and story line come to life every time and I just can’t stop reading once I start. Highly recommend the Orphan X series!!!

When St. Martin's Press approached me with a book review request, I jumped at the opportunity. I love Evan Smoak, and I can't get enough of these books.
So we meet Evan again in a new case when his phone rings. But this time, he believes this will be his last case. He wants to stop being The Nowhere Man, and start living his own life for a chance. Maybe with Mia if she will ever forgive him?
This book was like an onion that just kept on peeling and peeling. Whenever you thought things ended, there was something even more dangerous on the horizon. Evan just could not get a break. I was on the edge of my seat all the time.
Based on how the book ended, I can't wait for the next one in the series. It should be interesting...

First of all I want to start off by saying that I really love this series - The Orphan X Series. I rarely give 5 star reviews, and honestly that's more for me than anything - to be able to know at a glance if a book is one of my favorites and to tell me immediately with a glance if I would ever reread it.
I was lucky enough to be given a ARC for the latest book of Evan Smoak's adventures and it did not disappoint. One of the things that I have loved so much about this series is the development that we see in Evan as he is trying to figure out who he is now that he is no longer Orphan X. He knows who he was bred and trained to be; he knows that he will never been what he considers "normal"; yet if you were to peel off his layers, he is a genuinely really great guy. He can be kind, compassionate and he also has an EXTREMELY innate sense of loyalty to those he considers under his protection. Granted, he can also kill you before you even knew it was coming and he HAS left a trail of his victims (mostly scumbags) in his wake ...a very long trail...but he also feels extreme guilt for his past actions, even though they were mostly given under orders. The Nowhere Man has been his attempt to atone, to somehow try to balance the scales for things he has had to do in the past with who he thinks he might want to be in the future.
This book takes us on a journey of what Evan hopes will be his last case as The Nowhere Man but for once, it seems to be never ending. Once you think it is over and the bad guys taken care of, we realize that nope - still more bad guys. Things are bigger and badder (hmmm, is that a word?) than ever.
I long ago realized that when reading this series, you just need to leave reality somewhat a bit behind. I don't mean that in a bad way and the author does a fantastic job on researching everything from facts on guns, fighting techniques, IT and coding capabilities, etc. But, Evan seems to have unlimited resources, unlimited money and always seems to be able to extract himself from any bad situation. Not that this is a bad thing - personally I'm always rooting for him and sometimes my heart is beating so fast as he is ALWAYS around people trying to kill him. But, if you go into this series with the idea that it is a thriller with an amazingly competent protagonist - I think that makes it easier to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
I do not want to give anything away because this book is not scheduled for release until 2020, but you will not be disappointed. This is classic Orphan X...and then some. We see many of the characters that we have learned about from Evan's very small close knit circle and grown to adore. There is a big bad that has many, many layers and once the ball gets rolling in this book, there is not much time for a breather.
Evan's longing to have a normal life is made all the more sad because he does not even really understand what a normal life would entail. It breaks my heart. I want so much more for him, things he doesn't feel he deserves, but he is changing and evolving...all for the better and I am excited for the things that may be in store from him in the future.
If you have not read this series, this is not a stand alone book. I guess you could read it and understand the plot because it does have a story arc with a conclusion, but you really need to go out and start with book 1 to completely understand who Evan is and how he got to be the way he is. You will not be sorry!
Great continuation of the series - I hope this is not the end because we still have so much more to learn about Evan, and after this book - there are things he did not even know that you can bet will be the next case on his agenda.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with and ARC for this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a great addition to the Orphan X series; however, I would have preferred a bit more human interaction with Mia and Peter. The entire story was interesting and holds the readers attention from beginning to end.

Long live Evan Smoak! After Orphan X's last adventure it left one wondering where author Gregg Hurwitz had left to go. But, it just goes to show that Hurwitz is much more clever than I.
Orphan X #5 is REALLY good. But, could this actually be the last mission for X? He seems to be moving that way and as his fans we sincerely hope not.
In Into the Fire, X is considering hanging it up after one more Nowhere Man mission and much internal dialogue to the point on what it would be like to be "normal".
With that, Evan receives the now normal call to help from someone who is already running from those trying to kill him. Max Merriweather is a down on his luck guy who promised his older brother that he would deliver a package to a lawyer if anything ever happened to him. With the older brother's death by torture, Max starts the quest to fulfill an obligation only to be chased and almost killed. Not knowing where to turn, while running he runs into the last X helpee and is given THE number to contact the Nowhere Man. In his typical fashion, X handles the problem fairly quickly, but it seems that that there are others involved and much to Evan's surprise and consternation, each head killed sprouts two more. Knowing that Max will never be safe until the job is completely done, Evan forges ahead into some of his most harrowing experiences yet. Add the reliable standby's of Mia, Peter, and Joey not to mention a new addition Dog, and you are in for a wild ride.

I’ve read every book in the series, and I was worried that this would be the conclusion... but it’s a great plot, and I enjoyed the cliffhanger!

Into the Fire is the fifth Orphan X novel which features Evan Smoak as the hero. Synopsis, Evan was an orphan who was plucked from an orphanage and made into a highly trained killer by a secret government agency. He eventually quits the program and goes into hiding and becomes the nowhere man who helps people with only one caveat, to pass on his contact information should they find someone in trouble.
In this book, Max is given an envelope by his brother, Grant, to be delivered in case of Grant’s death to a journalist. After Greg is killed, Matt soon realizes he’s being targeted and happens to run into someone that the nowhere man had previously helped (Trevon). He calls Evan who seems to have little trouble eliminating this threat but lo and behold with every crime syndicate there is another layer above it. He expertly dispenses all threats while still showing his human side by helping his elderly neighbor that was robbed and reunite too loves who separated for the wrong reason.
A nice bonus is that characters from prior books keep re-appearing and it shows how all the characters are progressing. As expected, this book is excellent. Fast paced and exciting. It did not disappoint. Looking forward to the next installment.

I love the Nowhere Man books and this one was no exception. In each one, he is humanized a bit more, this book more than ever.. Always great to see the real world interactions here as well. Thanks so much to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC. There are some breaks from one character to another that were not easy to identify but I'm sure that will be fixed in the edited copy.

I received this ARC from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve been a fan of the Orphan X series since its debut novel. After the fourth installment (Into the Dark) I wondered what could possibly be left for Evan Smoak to have to tackle? How is Gregg Hurwitz going to continue build after what he set up for Orphan X in that book? This latest iteration didn’t disappoint.
In Into the Fire, Evan Smoak tackles what he plans to be his last mission. What seems to be an easy and straightforward problem to solve, seems to spiral further out of control at every turn. This book is full barrel through to the end, with the last line being a jaw dropping set up to book six. I can’t wait!

This is the fifth book in the Orphan X series. I have read the other books and this one follows along with Ethan Smoak, who was part of a black ops’ government program. Ethan is the Nowhere Man; he helps people who have nowhere to turn. His latest client is Max Merriweather whose cousin was murdered after giving Max an envelope. Ethan goes about neutralizing the threat but after each time something else comes after them. Each threat is worse than the next. To top it off Ethan is fighting with a concussion he gets at the beginning of the book. In this installment Ethan becomes more human, he has Joey, a young orphan he saved in an earlier book, a dog he rescues, and his neighbors that he helps. He is a good guy and trying to atone for his past.
This book is well written and very enjoyable. I must admit there are many far fetched things that happen in the book, but it is a book and he is Orphan X trained spy and assassin. I was glad to see all the characters from pasts books.

HOLY. COW.
X wants out. And he's trying, so hard, to get there... Unfortunately, his latest Nowhere Man case keeps unfolding like an onion from hell, and as he races against his own body and clocks that keep resetting, the options in front of him keep shrinking. Of course, he's Orphan X, so you know he'll wrangle all the pieces together eventually, but there were several points in this one where I honestly didn't see how - even with his mad skills and incredible supporting cast.
Seriously, I don't know how Hurwitz manages to keep ramping up the action AND devising new and incredibly intricate plots for Evan Smoak to unravel, all while maintaining the integrity of the central theme of redemption and never lapsing into any issues of suspended disbelief or incredulity... This is one of my favorite series and this is precisely why: the writing, pacing, characterization, and details are SPOT-ON. Everything Hurwitz puts in the story means something, even if you don't realize what until the bitter end. Every detail about Orphan X makes sense and ties into every detail about the world he lives in (both willingly and unwillingly). It gives the stories an incredible depth and breadth that go beyond its typical genre fare, and really makes them stand out.
This one ended with a FABULOUS twist that I wouldn't have guessed in a million reads. I cannot wait to see where Hurwitz is taking this one - it's a mind-blowing addition to the series, particularly with the conclusion of the latest case and his developing relationships with Mia and Joey. Here's hoping the next installment comes out exceptionally quickly!

This was a great suspense/thriller story. Right from the beginning you jump into the action. Evan who was an orphan and at the age of twelve pick by a government program to be trained with assassin like skills and called
Orphan X. He was able to free himself from the program and decided he would help those in trouble with nowhere to turn and became known as The Nowhere Man. He takes on a mission to help Max Merriweather who was given a thumb drive by his cousin to keep safe should anything happen to him and the next thing he knows his cousin is murdered. Every time Evan takes down what he thinks is the problem another one pops up. He’s hoping this will be the last mission he will do as The Nowhere Man and then he can try and live a normal life but a problem keeps popping up.
This story keeps the suspense going through the whole story and when you think you know who did it you are surprised at the twists that keep coming and the incredible skills Evan has. I would definitely recommend this book.

🤓❤️📚’s❣️

A great continuation in the Orphan X series. The action began on page 1 and almost never let up. I liked the evolution of Evan and Joey’s friendship - their banter and tender moments were great breaks between all the shooting scenes. And oh holy sh*t - that ending!!!! It’s a twist I almost didn’t see coming and I can’t wait to read the next book!

Gregg Hurwitz does it again. Another great Orphan X sequel. This book has everything! Thank you for the opportunity to read and rate this novel.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my advance copy of “Into the Fire” by Gregg Hurwitz – for my honest review
This is the 5th book in the Orphan X Series. I have read all of the previous books in this series, and am a fan.
For those who have not read one yet, They really do no require reading in order as they are a good stand alone read as well.
“Into the Fire” – WOW, what a roller coaster – fast paste and exciting. I am giving this book all 5 starts. It was a fun read from start to finish!
I was a little let down by the previous book - Out of the Dark, but this one was the best so far for me
This was an exciting read, with the main character Evan Smoak “Orphan X”, who is an ex- black-ops government asset.
The storyline will not let you down!
