"Cinderella and the Glass Ceiling" by Laura Lane and Ellen Haun is a modern retelling of the classic fairy tale that cleverly blends fantasy with contemporary themes of feminism and empowerment. In this updated version, Cinderella isn't just a damsel in distress waiting for her prince to rescue her — she's a savvy businesswoman determined to break through the glass ceiling and make her dreams a reality.

Lane and Haun's witty writing and sharp humor breathe new life into the familiar story, offering a fresh perspective on the challenges faced by women in the workforce. Through Cinderella's journey from rags to riches, the authors skillfully explore issues such as gender inequality, workplace discrimination, and the importance of female solidarity.

What sets "Cinderella and the Glass Ceiling" apart is its ability to entertain while also delivering a powerful message about female empowerment. The characters are dynamic and multi-dimensional, with Cinderella herself serving as a relatable and inspiring protagonist who refuses to let societal expectations hold her back.

While the story retains the enchanting elements of the original fairy tale, including a fairy godmother and a charming prince, it also subverts traditional gender roles and offers a more empowering narrative for modern readers. Lane and Haun strike the perfect balance between fantasy and reality, creating a story that is both enchanting and thought-provoking.

Overall, "Cinderella and the Glass Ceiling" is a delightful read that will resonate with anyone who has ever dared to dream big and defy the odds. Lane and Haun's clever reimagining of a classic tale is sure to inspire readers to break their own glass ceilings and pursue their passions with courage and determination.

These are not your childhood fairytales! This collection of re-imagined stories were witty, smart, and positively enjoyable. It is the perfect mix of commentary and entertainment.

A satirical take on fairy tales. In each story the author highlights the problem with the fairy tale as a whole and attempts to fix it in a modern way. Going into this I assumed it would be more of a straight retelling and be appropriate for all ages. While reading it I realized that wasn't true, they are fairy tales for adults. Which I am totally fine with. The concept is interesting and it was enjoyable to read through.

Such a fun book! I can’t wait to give a copy to my 21 year old daughter! Definitely not a kids book but extremely clever and entertaining!!

I LOVED this book of short stories! A retelling of classic fairy tales with a feminist twist. Includes hilariously adapted classics such as 'The Little Mermaid gets a vagina' and 'Sleeping Beauty gets woke' in which Prince Charming is given a lesson in consent (NOT cool to kiss a sleeping lady!) I laughed from start to finish of this short read. This is perfect for feminists both male and female and while hilarious and good-natured, a few lessons could be learned from it.

A funny and thought-provoking rewriting of some well-known tales. With a definite feminist angle, the witty heroines of these stories learn important lessons, from Mulan to Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Sometimes a bit too on the nose, but it makes excellent point while highlighting the problematic original storylines.

I loved Cinderella and the Glass Ceiling!! My young adult daughter has loved Cinderella since she was 2, so we have read every Cinderella story we could get our hands on . We read this book together and we both loved it. This book is so fun and we laughed so hard. We really enjoyed this version of Cinderella and highly recommend it!

Who would’ve thought fairy tales needed a revamp?! A modern, funny and very apt re-telling of the classic fairy tales that we grew up listening and seeing! The hilarious side definitely took the edge of the stories. About time!
Thank you NetGalley, the authors and publisher for the ARC.

4.5*

Okay, this wasn't perfect but I definitely had a hoot reading this.

A modern and funny retelling on Cinderella, Mulan, the Evil Queen of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, the Princess and the Pea, Rapunzel and Goldilocks.

I could have read this in one go since it's about 2h long in total but I was falling asleep when I started it and stopped at 20%. Read the rest just now.

If you want a good time, try it out 🙂

This book is hilarious. That's really the best (and only) way to describe this book. It was a hilarious, feminist journey of just some of the things women, POC, and LGBTQ people have to walk through with their lives daily. The authors did a good job in their individual stories to make everything feel cohesive and interesting. The stories were quick reads and not too long. It was a breath of fresh air to read about fairytales and disney movies I've seen all my life in a new way.

Who would have thought fairy tales could be so hilarious? I love how the authors took the traditional fairy tales with women being "saved" by a man and turned them into fairy tales with independent women that can take care of themselves! It was such a unique premise, but it worked!

A hilarious yet meaningful book on fairy tale retellings. It's short and to the point. Every story included has something to be learnt, not only on feminism, but on race, respect (or the concept around entitlement) and the rigidity of social expectations. I hadn't expected to be smiling away while nodding constantly at how true the messages stated were. They are relatable to me as a woman, and I find that everyone, especially those with more traditional mindsets, should read this. Respect a woman's choice no matter what. She doesn't want to get married? Let it be. No children? Let it be. I think it also helps to think what these situations would be like when it comes to men, because believe it or not, it is not that difficult to do.

The writing style is crude and direct, but extremely fun. You'd think with mention of masturbation and vaginas that it would be seen as vulgar, but everything fits. Then again... why should these subjects be seen as 'vulgar'? I love how the author has managed to include all things taboo and somehow make this experience for every reader a memorable one — and in a good way.

Telling of the classic stories with a modern twist. Shorter than I’d like but great bite sized stories that pack a bunch.

This book was hilarious! Well, most of it. I ended up getting annoyed 3/4 through because they were just weird. I think if they had been longer and less "in your face" all at once it would have worked better. Cool concept, bad actuality. 3 stars.

I didn't love those stories as much as I thought I would. While I love a good parody here and there and the idea to re-write famous fairytales from a feminist point of view was brilliant, the execution didn't work for me. It was way over the top.

I liked the idea of "Cinderella and the Glass Ceiling" but, unfortunately, the writing style just didn't work for me. The retellings were just way too over the top for me.

Thank you to Netgally, the fabulous authors and the publisher for this free review copy.

When I first showed interest in this book I suppose I really didnt pay attention. As soon as I started reading it I knew I would love it.

It's so sarcastic, humorous and "now". It has taken societal standards to a extreme and the result is pure empowerment and hilarity.

If you are looking to read stories where the humans are empowered, this is the book for you. If you are easily offended then you are not the target demographic for this book.

I would give this book 10 stars if I could.

Feminist, witty and modern retelling of famous fairy-tales. From The Little Mermaid finding her own "pearl' to Cinderella kind of being a dummy about glass slippers and then breaking the glass ceiling, each retelling is funny and powerful truths on modern women.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this fun book.

Just. Freaking. Wow. Such a quick but ENTERTAINING read. Way to take all of the most prevalent fairy tales and asking the question - is it truly ok to kiss a princess while she is sleeping? She doesn’t give consent. Did Ariel truly understand EVERYTHING that obtaining legs entails? This book literally had me cracking up the entire time and I cannot wait to see what else this author releases in the future.
