It took me a while to follow the different managers however the writing style is quite prosaic and easy to follow. It was fascinating to read about the different managerial styles and think about the way the contrasted and think about how they compare to modern times. I liked the fact that featuring three managers offered far more than a standard one person biography and it was great to reflect back on times when football wasn’t about money but about sport and pride

Enjoyed reading about the legend that was Bill Shankly, a truly extraordinary man who changed the fortune of Liverpool FC forever!! Interesting how his life crossed over with Matt and Jock.

This is a beautifully written book. One of the best sportsbooks I've ever read. They manage to intertwine the lives of the three managers in such an enjoyable way that it's a pleasure to read. Honestly, you don't even need to be a football fan to enjoy this book, the stories are so interesting. I think this will be the perfect Christmas gift for the sports lover in your life. Easily 5 stars!

I have enjoyed several of Leo Moynihan’s previous books and this is another excellent addition to his portfolio.

He tells the story of three of the greatest post war UK football managers in Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Jock Stein.

So much has already been written about these three legends yet much of what is written here appears fresh and new, testimony to the author’s writing skill and deep research.

He explores the key connection between them all. The fact that all three were born within a stone’s throw of each other in Scotland and shared a family mining background that surely shaped them. .

Seemingly hewn out of granite the three Kings of the Underworld - a wonderful description of miners invented by Richard Burton - took the football world by storm testimony to their talent and background.

Moynihan has woven a fascinating tale that deserves to be read by all serious football fans.
