A beautifully illustrated book. In the Red Canoe engaged my 7 year old and he happily shared the moral of the story with me after reading this. Highly recommended for folks with young children.

Such a pretty book! A child reflects on the time spent with their grandfather, paddling out on a lake in a red canoe, and all the magical sights nature offers. The rhyming tale is perfect for bedtime, and the beautiful illustrations offer lots of detail to look at and different perspectives to enjoy. A real treat!

I remember skimming this book and it not really catching my attention. Without going back and reading the synopsis I couldn't tell you what it was about. 🙈

EDIT: Okay, this is definitely not the book I thought it was. I thought this was a chapter story with a similar name. If this book doesn't release until next year, why has it already been archived? I try to read and plan/write my reviews based on release dates because it keeps me more organized which is why I hadn't gotten around to reviewing In The Red Canoe yet.

This is a delightful book of observing nature as a young child goes out in the red canoe with his or her grandfather.

They dont' talk much, they just observe all of nature around them. And they see a lot, from beavers to osprey to dragonflies. The day gradually moves from bright to dark, and the colors of the book change as well.

A delightful book to show children nature that is around them.

This is a lovely picture book which celebrates, in accomplished rhyming verse, a child’s experiences with her grandfather in a red canoe out on the lake. The girl’s grandfather introduces her to the abundant life in and around this watery world: beavers, ducks, osprey, frogs, and water lilies. Artist Laura Bifano represents the various scenes beautifully—from above, from below, and at various angles. I particularly love how she presents the reflections of the two canoeists (the old man and the young girl) in one of the early illustrations in the book, but my favourite pictures are of swallows whirling above the canoe at dusk and of the pair’s nighttime rides when the lake becomes indistinguishable from the sky. (They reminded me of the scene in the film Immortal Beloved in which the boy Beethoven runs out into the night and floats in a pond that reflects the stars—and becomes the universe.)

I hope Leslie Davidson and Laura Bifano will team up again.

This is a beautifully illustrated rhyming story about a child who goes canoeing with her (or his? the child has a pony tail but could be either gender) grandfather. The artwork is stunning, and it does a wonderful job of portraying the wildlife and beauty they encounter. Readers see a beaver building a dam under the canoe, frogs leaping out of reach of playful hands, baby ducks with their mama and many other birds, fish, animals, etc., all accompanied by poetic text that tells the story.

"An osprey's wings beat like a fan.
She circles, then she drops.
Grandpa and I, we hold our breath
when, in a flash, she drops."

This would make a wonderful book for read-alouds, nature study or bedtime.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review purposes.

The illustrations were stunning. This was a short and sweet children's book about a child's canoe ride with her grandfather. The animal and nature scenes were sweet. Very basic plot line, best for little children.

I received this ARC from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is a beautifully illustrated love story between a grandfather and grandchild and their relationship with the natural magic the red canoe affords them. I loved this story and think it will be well loved in many families.

A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.

4.5/5 - Really liked it.

This was a magical book, which captures both the magic of a loving relationship with a grandparent and the exploration of a wild natural world. The illustrations are beautiful and enchanting (especially the one with the moonlit sky!) and the narration flows elegantly into short, but exhilarating rhyme. I may not be a child, but this book filled me with a childlike wonder and made me wish that I was rowing downriver in my own red canoe. I'm filled with a warm glow after reading this lovely story.

I would certainly purchase this book for any parents with young children.

In the Red Canoe is a lovely, relaxing look at nature through the eyes of a child and their grandfather. The rhyming text highlights all sorts of creatures that the pair see on their day-long canoe trip: frogs, beavers, birds, and fish.

The illustrations--especially the nighttime ones--are lovely and really convey the magic of the natural world. I like the fact that the child is drawn as rather gender-neutral, which makes them relatable to a lot more readers.

This is a really nice picture book with a distinctly Canadian feel (which isn't surprising given the publisher and the background of both the author and illustrator). But this would likely appeal to anyone who enjoys getting out in nature and exploring its wonders.

What a lovely tale of a little boy and his grandpa! A young boy and his grandpa spend a day and evening together paddling in a rowboat, stop to observe various creatures along the river. The illustrations are lovely. makes me wish I could spend a day like this with a loved one! Some littles are going to love this book.

This is the first time I have reviewed a book for this publisher and it will not be my last. I was hoping for a great story to read to my daughter and I absolutely found one! Where to start? The illustrations by Laura Bifano are GORGEOUS. I hope she wins an award for her work because it is exquisite. The colors used are so beautiful and her illustrations match the text perfectly.

On to the story - this could be read to anyone I'd say 6 or younger (but I think the sweet spot would be 1-3 years old). I can't wait to add this to our bedtime story collection as the text reads like a poem and beautifully highlights what is on the page. It's also a very soothing nighttime read. Not only are animals and their environment appreciated here; so is the special bond between the young boy and his grandfather.

I absolutely adored this book and I know my daughter will too. In March 2020, run out and buy this for the young person in your life!

Thank you to Netgalley, Orca Book Publishers and Leslie A Davidson for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.
