This was very well-paced and so dramatic but I think what really stood out for me was Maggie. Almost two years ago, Nina's husband Glen disappeared from his fishing boat one morning. Following his disappearance Nina starts to learn that their relationship may not have been as good as she once thought. Insert, cool new guy Simon, everyone thought it was too soon for Nina to move on, but knowing these secrets about her husband, Nina doesn't believe so. Nina is absolutely smitten by Simon, and her son Connor gets along with him great. It is only her daughter, Maggie that knows things are off.
.
Maggie is determined to show everyone the "other" side of Simon, the other side that only she keeps getting glimpses of. Maggie will do anything, to prove that there is something off about Simon and that her mom shouldn't trust him. This was not only a book about domestic abuse, but it also covered the subject of bullying and a surprising new friendship between Maggie and a friend. The New Husband, will keep you guessing, and you won't be able to stop reading. If you're looking for a twisty, smart, and entertaining read, then this is for you.

The New Husbsnd by D. J. Palmer is a phenomenal book! I couldn’t put it down. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat, heart pounding and dreading reading on. You are compelled to turn those pages and see where the story is taking you.
Palmer’s writing style is unique. I have never read a book that made me hold my breath. I was scared for several of the characters and actually had to pick my tablet up and finish the book before I could relax and go to sleep.
This was the first book I’ve read by D. J. Palmer and it certainly won’t be my last. His book was a thrilling adventure I don’t think you will want to miss.
I received this book from the publisher for a fair and honest review.

Loved this book, full of suspense and many twists that I didn’t see coming, Highly recommended ! One of my favorite books that I have read so far this year

The New Husband (out April 14!) follows a very typical domestic thriller setup. Nina Garrity moves in with her new boyfriend, Simon, two years after her husband Glen mysteriously disappeared. Her children, Connor and Maggie have extremely different views of Simon. Connor loves him, while Maggie is increasingly scared of him.
This book was almost 400 pages and the first half really dragged for me. When the second half of the book hit, however, I was completely shocked. The twist was not at all something I saw coming, and the plot became next-level messed up.
The push and pull between Maggie and her mom was extremely frustrating, but in a good way. I couldn’t wait to see how Maggie would be able to convince her mom that Simon wasn’t all he seemed.
By the end of this thrill-ride I was totally hooked, but the distribution of the action and excitement definitely felt uneven to me.
My Rating: 🍪🍪🍪.5

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This was a sick and twisted psychological thriller. I don't usually like them this twisted but this book was very good. For those who like such depravity I highly recommend this book. Enjoy! 📚

This book started out really slow for me - which seems unusual for what I would call a psychological thriller. That being said, I put it down and came back a couple of weeks later and things started to pick up with it. Simon turned out far more evil than I could have anticipated and the ending definitely delivered. I can understand Nina having a difficult time navigating everything in her life once, as the reader, I understood the depth of how she had been manipulated. There were so many layers to Simon's deception, it was amazing Maggie ever saw through them.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the eARC.

Thanks, NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my ARC.
Too good to be true. Sounds cynical, but, more times than not, this adage fits.
Nina's world changed when her husband was declared missing. It was a routine weekend morning, until the police officers showed up at her front door, bearing good news...and bad.
Then, a couple years later(too soon for some), Nina finds a new love in Simon. Although she' is wary, Simon isn't exactly a stranger(he teaches at her daughter's school and they had previously met at a school event). But he's evasive about his past, claiming it was too painful and Nina doesn't want to pry. She should have.
In the best of times, a blended family is an adjustment. But, add to that, a shift of residence and the uncertainty surrounding Glen, Nina and her two children, Maggie and Connor, have a lot to grapple with. Granted, Glen was far from a perfect husband and father but still...they feel the loss, acutely. But, the Glen they lost is far different from the Glen who is missing.
Her family and friends mean everything to Nina. They are her support system and she just wants everyone to at least TRY to get along. And, she wants to take a stab at rejuvenating her social work career. As a modern, independent woman, being totally reliant on a man does not sit well with her. But, balancing personal and professional life is easier said than done. Something's gotta give and Simon's mixed messages aren't helping. As expected, there are conflicts and Nina often finds herself caught in the middle. She ignores her instincts, to her detriment
Told from varying perspectives, the plot shifts smoothly in time from the present to flashbacks. Even though I could often predict what would happen next, it was an entertaining read with some good life lessons.

I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was quite the read! It was an absolute page turner. I could not put it down. I really loved how intense the writing style was. It went well with the pacing and the story structure.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.

The nre husband is a mystery with lots of twist that will keep you guessing until the end. The characters are deverse and you'll be trying to help them make the best choices.. You'll be wondering how they get to the right places and finds all the answers.

Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and DJ Palmer for the chance to read this in exchange for my honest opinion. Another wonderful twisty read from DJ Palmer. I didn’t want to put it down, grabbing every chance I could to read more. I did see the twist coming once it started but was still very intrigued to see how it all played out. I liked how it all wrapped up and especially appreciated the epilogue.

Nina Garrity was flattered by the attention Simon Fitch, a middle school history teacher, paid to her after the disappearance of her husband Glen. Heartbroken at Glen’s infidelity and the financial troubles he had hidden from her, Simon’s love and adoration was soothing her troubled soul. Her teenaged son, Connor, welcomed Simon’s attention and basked in its glow, bonding with Simon in ways he had never done with Glen. Her daughter Maggie, a student at the school where Simon was teaching, was definitely not a fan of Simon or of his intrusion into her life.
Simon was just getting over the suicide of his wife Emma when he and Nina met on a dating website, and he thought Nina was the perfect woman. There were little things that marred their relationship, but doesn’t every couple have difficulties at some point? He objected to Nina’s career as a social worker, but only because Maggie was having such a hard time adjusting to the changes in her life. Simon wanted Nina all to himself, and was prepared to do anything to make it happen.
I’m conflicted on this book. The first half captured my attention, and made me care about the characters. Was Nina really going to give up everything for Simon? Was Maggie overreacting, or was Simon really a creep? And then…the plot twist. I found myself shaking my head at the unrealistic scenario I was expected to buy into, and my attention wavered. Without going into spoiler territory, let me just say that I was disappointed in the way things played out in a story I started reading with high hopes.

I realize I’m in the minority with my opinion but gosh this storyline was far-fetched and hard to believe. I liked it well enough up until 50% into the book when a major twist is revealed and the “yeah right” factors just took on new levels. I skimmed though the 2nd part just to see how it ends, with so many 4 and 5 start reviews please don’t let me stop you from reading this one and decide for yourself, Thank you netgalley and publisher for this arc in exchange of an honest review.

I enjoyed reading the New Husband by D.J. Palmer. The book was a little slow to start but it picked up and held my interest. This book is about Nina who is trying to move on after the death of her husband. The writing was good, and the plot was interesting. I would recommend this book If you are looking for a good psychological thriller.

Nina Garrity was shocked when the police arrived at her home to tell her that her husband's boat had been found adrift with only their dog Daisy aboard, and the deck covered in blood. Fast forward a year later: Nina has reluctantly begun to move on with her life since her husband Glen is presumed dead, and things have come out about him that have shocked her and made her ready to cut ties to the past. Nina & her two teenage children are moving to a new house with Simon, a history teacher from Maggie's school. Connor, the older of the two is in high school and was never as close to their father so he is enjoying the closeness of the new father figure. Maggie however, sees something dark in Simon and is determined to expose him before her mom marries him and it is too late.
I loved this book. I kept wondering how Nina did not see some of the things Simon did as gaslighting, but I had to keep reminding myself that when you are in that situation you don't always see things clearly or rather you don't want to face up to them. I really liked Maggie. She had a lot of grit and determination and was very mature for her age. The chapters were told in the voices of the different characters so you got a 360 degree view of the story. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves a good thriller.

This was just an ok read for me. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters and it’s not really different from what I’ve read lately.
Nina’ husband and father of their two children goes missing under mysterious circumstances. Nina falls for Simon and moves her children and herself in with him less then a year later. Simon becomes controlling and manipulative.
I don’t quite get the title The New Husband, since Nina never married him and I don’t think they were officially engaged. Nina was whiny and self pitying the first half of the book but turned around half way. I did like her 12 year old daughter. She wasn’t falling for the same crap her mother did.
It wasn’t bad it was just the same old story.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for giving me the advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

Woweeee The New Husband was an awesome read and a great psychological thriller! I am not a night owl but I was up late reading this book, it was truly hard to put down! From page 1 I was invested and although at points in the book it was predictable, the way it was written created suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat. The New Husband follows Nina, who's husband Glen mysteriously goes missing. After Glen's disappearance she meets Simon, a teacher at her children's school, and quickly falls in love. Things move quickly between Nina & Simon but throughout the book we learn more about who he really is and what his motivations really are.
I read this book in less than 48 hours, it was really hard to put down! I definitely recommend this book for a quick read and an engaging thriller :) The New Husband is releasing on April 14th! Thanks to St Martins Press & NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.

Wow - best physiological thriller! It keeps you enthralled from page one! And everyone should read Maggie's words in the epilogue and live them! The world would be a better place!

This book was insane, in the best way possible. I didn't like it at first; one of the characters rubbed me the wrong way out the gate. But by the end of the book I was absolutely hooked, sitting on the edge of my seat to find out what would happen. The climax of the story 100% made up for my misgivings; it was phenomenal. And the ending made me really happy. 4.5 stars, rounded down because that one character was so freaking unlikeable it drove me insane. All in all I cannot WAIT for Palmer's next book!

Nina and her two children, Maggie and Conner, have just suffered the immense tragedy of losing their husband and father. Glenn has been presumed dead after a fishing accident, however they never did find the body. Nina and Conner are convinced he is dead, but Maggie isn't quite sure.
Amidst the original search for Glenn and then decision that Glenn was presumed dead, much of his past life was drug up in the mix. It was revealed that Glenn had an affair and also drained the bank account belonging to him and his wife, Nina.
Flash forward about a year, Nina has moved on and finds herself in a new relationship with Simon Fitch. Simon is a social studies teacher and Maggie's middle school. Nina's friends thought she was being too presumptuous about moving on so quickly, but Nina just felt that it was "right." Connor, in high school, and Nina are completely on board when the two move in together creating a new dynamic of a household. Maggie, on the other hand, has her many doubts about who Simon is as a person and doesn't believe he has the most true intentions.
I love how this book was told from multiple perspectives, mainly switching between Nina and Maggie. The plot was constantly driven forward and gave me that heart thumping feeling that I crave out of a thriller novel more than once. This was a true page turner for me and did not leave any unanswered questions which I appreciate. It is very frustrating to me in a thriller novel if there are still unanswered questions at the end.
I found the characters very easy to relate to from the aspect of Nina wanting to see the best in people and seeking happiness but also Maggie's hesitant behaviors.
Overall a fantastic read that you will tear through!

This new thriller by DJ Palmer may take a bit to get going, but once it does, there is not a dull moment! It definitely fits the definition of a thriller.
When Glen Garrity goes missing, everyone assumes he must be dead—even his family. His wife Nina eventually begins a relationship with a middle school teacher named Simon. The children, Connor and Maggie, have two distinctly different feelings about Simon.
As time goes on the relationship between Simon and Maggie becomes very tense. Simon and Nina are having trouble as well, because of Maggie and because of Nina’s lingering feelings for Glen and her reluctance to go ahead and marry Simon.
Eventually Maggie gets Connor involved in a scheme to find out some things about Simon. Things within the family soon reach a dangerous level and thankfully Connor is able to make a decision that saves his family.
Along with the family’s loyal dog, Daisy (my favorite character), they all soon learn what really happened to their dad and what secrets Simon has been hiding. The ending was so tense, that I had to put the book down and walk away for a bit!
For sensitive readers, there are some violent scenes and references to domestic abuse. Readers who love a great thriller, will enjoy this one. It may be a bit predictable, but I still found it quite an exciting read.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read an advance copy and give my honest review.
