The New Husband is a domestic and psychological thriller story with obsession, suspicion, and deceit. It touches up on how the lies we tell ourselves in order to accept certain circumstances are the lies that threaten us the most. Nina, a single mother of 2, has suffered for the past year and a half. Her husband is missing and she discovered that he was living a double life with another women, now as she is trying to move on with her life with the “perfect” Simon, she ignores the troubling signs and concerns from her friends and family. Will Nina, wake up and see the red flags on time?
This novel takes a bit of time to build up, the reader can sense the impending doom around the corner. The best part I enjoyed in this novel was Maggie, Nina’s daughter, POV chapters, they really kept me going. I do think many people will enjoy reading this thriller, can be enjoyed on a cozy night in.

This was a fun, suspenseful ride. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what was going to happen next.

I want to thank the author, the publisher and #netgalley for the advance copy, which did not impact my review. I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more from this author.

This story is just okay. The story itself is about a woman whose husband dies during a fishing trip and she has to pick up the pieces and carry on taking responsibility for their family. She has not had the chance to confront him about details of his life that affect them both, such as adultery, him losing his job two years earlier without telling her, etc. She then becomes involved in a relationship with a teacher from her daughter's school which feels rushed and awkward. It has clearly made her daughter's life uncomfortable as well. This man seems so perfect, but is her really? The frustrating thing about this book is the toughness of the protagonist when her husband goes missing versus her weakness at other times. The "thriller" aspect of this book wasn't really where I wanted to see it. The story could have been better if it was.
This is a good story but could have been better. The last book I read by this author was Saving Meghan, and that was excellent. So, it is entirely possible that the subject matter difference wasn't really my thing.

Oh boy, this book frustrated me at times, or rather, Nina frustrated me. My goodness hasn't she ever read or seen a movie? Of course something is wrong with Simon - he is just too good to be true. Most especially after that no good husband of hers. Doesn't she ever wonder how he knows everything about her? This frustration got in the way of my enjoyment of The New Husband. Many people will enjoy this book but ultimately it wasn't quite the right book for me.

I had a tough time deciding on my rating for this book... For the longest time, I was definitely at 2 stars. The pace dragged and the characters were extremely predictable. The daughter Maggie was the only exception and I enjoyed the chapters from her point of view the most.

After a huge twist at around 65% into the story, the action and suspense increased and I quickly finished. Not a fantastic read but it did redeem itself somewhat by the conclusion and I'm glad that I finished.

A missing husband with financial troubles has left behind wife Nina and her two children. Picking up the pieces for them are local teacher and do-gooder Simon. A year and a half after her husband's disappearance Nina is looking forward to moving on with Simon and her children in their new house. Simon is thoughtful, thorough, encouraging, and supportive, until he isn't. Nina has her doubts about him but has trouble believing her gut, her daughter Maggie has no problem voicing her concerns but is soon blamed for actions that put doubts to her credulity. The New Husband has an interesting story line, but the lack of intellect on many of the characters made it hard to believe.

Oh my goodness, I stayed up until 3 am reading this and didn't even realize how much time had passed!

This is a story with so many twists and turns, that (spoiler alert) takes gaslighting to a whole new level. Kudos to D.J. Palmer for keeping all the moving bits and pieces on target - there are complicated relationships between newly abandoned mom Nina as she and her new boyfriend move in to a new house with her two kids. There is the mystery of the missing husband, Glen. Throw in some teen angst and some creepy vibes and some real cliffhangers and you've got one heck of a story. I loved that this book was unpredictable and so, so twisted!

D.J. Palmer crafts a wonderful story of love, betrayal and strong friendships. Not so much a thriller but more of mystery. Nina’s husband goes missing and there is a new man in her life not long afterwards. He is perfect in every way but he doesn’t seem to get along with her daughter Maggie. Maggie loses all of her main friends but makes a new one named Ben. Ben stands by Maggie’s side and listens to all of her problems. I loved Ben and Maggie’s characters. Can’t wait for her next book.

Eh. This thriller was a bit heavy handed. The reader was too much on the outside, so all of the red flags were very obvious. A good domestic thriller should you put so deep inside that you are just as blind sided as the protagonist. Not my favorite Palmer, but I’ll give her another go. #netgalley ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a domestic psychological thriller that really got you into the mind of and wanted to pick apart and dissect Simon. I usually don’t read in this genre and it takes a good one for it to keep my attention! I loved this story and kept finding myself wanting to know more and read more to see if my suspicions were true. Highly recommend!

This one didn't do it for me. I didn't love the characters, and it was a bit repetitive. I also found it to be very predictable. I obviously read it wrong because it got great reviews otherwise!

The New Husband by D.J. Palmer is the perfect example of 'don't judge a book by its cover'. Ah, but I'm not talking about the actual book here, rather the new husband, Simon. He is good looking, well-groomed, and seems to be perfect in all ways, always knowing exactly what to do to impress Nina, his 'cover' seems too good to be true. In reading The New Husband, you will find out just how much Simon actually strays from being the ideal husband, his 'book' is not as good as one would expect. There were a lot of twists and turns in this story that kept me wondering what would happen next. Maggie, Nina's daughter, is a spunky fun character that I especially enjoyed. Be prepared for a lot of creep factor to this book and do not expect to know what the biggest twist is, it sure surprised me!

I always find it difficult to review mystery novels, because I live in fear or the spoiler, and I know mystery lovers like myself will be able to read between the lines and pick up on clues that may spoil the experience for them as well. So this is why I just leave vague feelings of the book and hope it helps a little.
Pretty predictable, with a few twists I didn't see coming, though in hindsight I should have. However, I enjoyed the writing very much and I liked several of the characters. Not overly gratuitous in the love scenes or the violent scenes so readers averse to overly graphic descriptions of either will be pleased.
All in all I will read more of this author as they do have a nice style, and I would recommend this to anyone looking for something more than a cozy but not some gritty thriller.

The New Husband definitely gave a new spin to the psychological thriller genre. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and was genuinely surprised at the final twist!

Twists and turns. I love psychological thrillers. Enjoyed every page. I'm excited for D.J Palmer to write more!!

After her husband disappears one morning while fishing and a body is never found, Nina learns that he’s been hiding secrets from her. As her world is falling apart, a teacher from her daughter’s school sweeps her off her feet, and Nina quickly finds herself in a new relationship with Simon, much to her daughter Maggie’s dismay. I loved that part of the story was told from 13 year old Maggie’s perspective.

This is a great domestic thriller- my favorite genre of books. While parts of it may seem farfetched, which will bother some readers, it kept me engaged from the beginning and had me on the edge of my seat at the end.

Simon: *walking red flag*

Nina: What a great guy.

It took me forever to read this book. I was just never excited to pick it up and finish. The first half is incredibly slow, that by the time something finally happens it's just a let down.

Nina is a single mother - who lost her husband when he mysteriously disappeared. About a year and a half later she meets one of the teachers in her daughter Maggie's - Simon Finch, the two hit it off. They move in together Maggie just has this feeling about him - could she be right?

I was really looking forward to this one, but it was just okay to me. The premise is familiar, but one that I love so it didn't bother me. It was very much a slow burn and had a ton of build up to the ending...which I guessed about halfway through the book. I was bummed to find out I was right. Someone who doesn't read a ton of thrillers would probably love this one, but more experienced readers might be better off moving to something else.
