Thankyou to NetGalley, Pan-McMillan Australia and the author, Robin Cook, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Genesis in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
I thought this book provided a good read.
The storyline was well written with well drawn characters . Have always found this author to be a good read and Genesis is no exception.
Worth a read.

Dr Laurie Montgomery is the chief medical examiner for New York City and a routine autopsy of a social worker, followed quite quickly by her good friend, raises suspicions that both may have been drug users and victims of the opioid crisis. Adding to the mystery is the surprising finding that she is 10 weeks pregnant. Laurie gets a final year medical student, Aria Nichols, who has been causing problems with her brusque personality and has been missing her observation classes to conduct the autopsy. As Laurie hoped, Aria becomes interested in tracking down the father of the baby to determine his involvement in the drug overdose. Using data from genealogical DNA tests, Aria narrows the search for the father.

Using DNA to solve cold cases is becoming more common in real life so this plot is taking on a topical angle. Easy to read and grabbing the reader's interest early enabled me to zoom through this book. But I was disappointed by the writing itself which needed some good editing. The very first chapter or prologue felt like it was tacked on as an after-thought and read like a summary. It was very off-putting and not like the rest of the book. There was too much repetition of material with one section outlining the way a problem was solved and then immediately repeated by telling another character what the reader had just read. Completely unnecessary to have wade through what we've just read again. And the ending was very abrupt. So while the plot was generally good, the writing needed polishing.

Laurie might be the chief medical examiner but she spends more time doing the paperwork than spending time in the pit. Just when things can't get any worse she has a pathology resident that isn't doing what is required of her, her son JJ is having problems at school and she has to send her husband Jack to the school to talk to the teachers. She is worried though as Jack isn't always cool-headed and she just hopes that he can keep it under control. Aria Nichols doesn't want to do forensic rotation but she has no choice so she skips most of it but now she has no choice but to work with Laurie on a case. There is something about this case that speaks to Aria and she knows that she will stop at nothing to find out who gave this mother to be drugs. Laurie hopes that she has made the right decision by allowing Aria to follow through with the case. Aria isn't your typical resident she is rude and wants to do everything her way and she makes no friends but she is clever and knows her stuff. Could this be the case that changes her mind?
Aria knows that she needs to find out the truth about Kera and who the father is of the dead baby but is she prepared to follow the rules? She finds out from Kera's friend Madison that there might be a way to find out who the father is but before hey can start working on it Madison is pushed in front of a train. Is there a link there or will everyone just assume that it was an accident? Aria knows that she is on the right track now with the DNA and she hopes that she can find out the truth. But the killer isn't about to allow loose ends to be left so he needs to silence the last two women before they get together again. Will the killer be revealed before someone else dies?
A good interesting read. I was lucky enough to receive a copy via Netgalley & the publishing house in exchange for my honest review.
