I was so excited for this book and it did not disappoint. I have been eagerly waiting for it ever since I finished the first book, A Reluctant Bride. The Runaway Bride is the second book in Jody Hedlund’s new series, Bride Ships. This book picks up on a character who has left you with many questions. Arabella Lawrence is a runaway bride, but what exactly is she running from?
You meet Arabella Lawrence in the first book, but you really don’t know much about her. All you know is that she is one of the more wealthy women to travel on the ships. She is not like the poor women and that sets her apart. But in a way she is not better off, she has been held captive by the rules of her class.
Peter Kelly is a new character, this is the first time you read about him. But I fell in love with him at the beginning. He had made mistakes before you met him, but he has done his best to make amends and turn his life back to God. He is now a respectful baker in his town and well loved by most. But he is not without his demons and there are some who seem to only want bad for him.
I thought Arabella was sweet, she had gone through a lot back in England. She was just trying her best to learn how to survive in this totally different world. It was so cool to see her learn to see that class is not everything and that she didn’t have to be the kind of person who lived under the high standards of England. She learned that it was better to be kind than to care about what others thought about her.
Pete was a great character, he was unique and himself. I liked that even though he gave off an air of confidence, he was still a humble guy who loved God and loved to help people. He didn’t let the fear of man stop him from doing what he believed was right. He knew that he had his faults, but he did his best to honor God. I really liked how he really loved Arabella, he wanted what was best for her.
I also really enjoyed the fact that Mercy was in this book. It was really interesting to see Mercy from a different view, since the first book was from her perspective. There were a couple of new characters and they won my heart, but I was so happy to see that Mrs. Moresby played a big part in this book.
This book had so many good quotes and so many good reminders. Some of my favorite quotes are, “Character is much more important than class” and “The world around us will always shift their definitions of what’s right and wrong. But God’s word never changes. His truth is steadfast. Why build my life on sinking sand when I have something much more solid I can live upon?” This is such a good reminder that God will never change and we can rest in Him.
This was an amazing book, I loved it so much. The Runaway Bride reminds us that we need to fear God and not man. Arabella struggles with letting what others think of her lead her life. Will she choose to do the right thing, or let her fear of man lead her. I read it so fast and it kept me up late at night, even though I had an early morning the next day I could not put it down. I definitely recommend this book and I can’t wait for the next one to come out.

I finally got around to reading this book after more than a year. I liked it a lot, and it was quite strong for the second novel in a series.
Arabella and Peter were both great characters and the story did a good job of exloring some of the social issues and condiitions facing the characters. Arabella was meant to represent a woman of the middle classes instead of a working class poor woman. For the most part, her character seemed realistic, although I think her secondary love interest was a bit of a charicature.

I didn't think the faith messages were heavy handed either. The characters had doubts but they did not seem contrived, nor were they condemned for having them.

I was not sure about all the langauge. The term "bakehouse" seemed to be an Americanism, but I did not notice very many of these.

Thanks to Bethany House for allowing me to read this title. I was not required to write a posiitve review and all opinions expressed are my own.

I so enjoyed this book! Not only is there a fantastic romance but it contains much historical information that makes me want to learn more about this time in history in beautiful British Colombia.

This is the second in the Bride Ship series by Jody Hedlund but it can he read alone. Unlike the first book, which follows one of the lower class women, this book follows Arabella Lawrence, a daughter of a wealthy banker and a true lady used to servants and a life of ease. While I knew from the first book she had come on the ship with painful scars, in this book we learn the truth of those scars and the events that prompted her escape on this ship.

Unlike the last book, which primarily took place on the ship as the women ventured to British Colombia, this book follows Arabella after she arrives in her new home. As a woman in the higher classes, Arabella expects to be sought after by some of the gentleman in the community, and she is! Handsome Lieutenant Drummond, one if the top officers stationed in British Colombia takes a quick interest in Arabella. He treats her well and accompanies her to all the events in the colony.

Understandably, when the ship first arrives, Arabella feels a bit overwhelmed. This is a Bride ship after all and there will be 10 men to every 1 woman in this British colony (hence the need for ships like these). Arabella, needing a respite and courage, flees to the dining room to give herself a pep talk. Here she encounters Peter Kelly (who quite enjoys her talk) the town baker and recently reformed Christian.

While Arabella believes Peter is unsuitable for her as a suitor due to his lower class standing he soon becomes a friend and opens her mind and heart to a different way of living, one which Arabella comes to appreciate. When she encounters a native girl in need of help, Pete is who she turns to. Pete is a charismatic and blunt man who decides from his first meeting with Arabella she is the one for him! Despite their class differences, his good heart and willingness to help all around him draws Arabella in. But could she really turn away from her upbringing and live without servants and higher class comforts?

This is a fantastic novel that not only has a enjoyable romance but provides many historical details of this time in British Colombia, especially the colonists interactions with the natives and the spread of small pox. Now I want to plan a trip here to see the beauty and learn more about this wonderful location! I cannot wait for the next books in this series which will be released in the coming months.

An interesting book about women who sailed to a whole new world to be brides. I did appreciate that they didn't get married immediately, but have to admit I hated the idea that they were basically women at auction when they arrived.

I loved the friendly banter and flirtation between Arabella and Pete but found a few of the scenes to be a little unrealistic for the time period.

I really loved how they both had a heart for the native americans though. I also loved how well they worked together.

I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the love triangle aspect, but for anyone that loves that trope this is the book for you!

Overall it was a good story.

I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. This is my honest review.

Another great novel by Jody! She leaves me swooning with the love story and I love the twist and turns. Including the funny way they get married. Would so be enjoyed by any historical romance, or romance readers!!

This book was a delight. I always enjoy Jody's stories. She just has a way of brining the reader in and making her characters come to life. I wish I would have read this book sooner. Arabella is a strong character. She comes from a wealthy family and knows that she has a place in society. However, when her fathers arranges a marriage for her, she rebels (for good reason) and jumps on a ship to British Colombia. There she enjoys her freedom and finds out what truly makes her happy. This is such a great story I recommend it anyone that loves a soft, romance. Happy reading my friends.

I was so glad to return to the Bride Ship Series. These girls enter your heart and you want only the best for them. You don't need to read the first book in the series before this, but you'll want to. In each, the characters search for God’s purposes and plans for them, and find strength in His courage. And they're thoroughly entertaining, keeping you engaged and holding your breath to the end. This story is about Arabella, a wealthy girl who had good reason to run away from her betrothed and go on a Bride Ship to seek a new opportunity on Vancouver Island, where men far outnumbered women. Pete was a baker there, with a love for the native population in the area. He battled the injustice of the English navy stationed there, controlling a smallpox outbreak by denying vaccinations to the natives and scattering them, wiping out much of their population. There are always people who see injustice and fight to expose it, but that doesn't mean it's easy. These people struggle to do what is right in God's eyes and persevere.

I received this book free from the publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Zoe travels to British Columbia on a bride-ship and finds it a challenge to figure out just where she belongs and to whom she should marry. When she thinks she's asking a pastor to marry her, she finds herself married to the pastor and not the man she was asking him to marry her too. Action, suspense, delightful children and characters that warmed my heart and some who I cheered against!

I requested this book through NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. My review is voluntary.

Jody Hedlund has a Bride Ship series, in which this one is the second in a series. That is sometimes okay and while you can understand what is going on with some of the characters, it is best if you have read the prior book to this one.

The scenery and details of the journey across the ocean intrigues me and made me want to research the area on my own.

The two people, Arabella and Pete, weren't quite the match I wanted. Even so, they were still fun to read and watch develop within the story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.. All opinions are my own.

I have tried to read this over the course of two weeks. I just am not hooked into the book. I’m sure it is great for others, but not for me. Maybe I’ll pick it up again later.

This is book two in the Bride Ships series, however I feel it is a stand alone book. If you enjoy historical romance you will like this series.

Arabella has fears and a past to overcome all while trying to find her place. Should she stay with her rules and class or dare she trust her heart. Lieutenant Drummond and Peter Kelly have a past that clashes already, so when Arabella enters into the picture their differences really show. I enjoyed the history, chemistry, and story line in this book and look forward to book three.

Jody Hedlund won me over in The Runaway Bride, #2 The Bride Ships, with her hero. He is Pete Kelly, a baker who is well-liked and charismatic. He also has a keen eye out for injustice done to his fellow-man and is quick to get involved. He is kind, has compassion even on his enemies, and is really trying to live for God. Which brings up his biggest question for God: if he’s living according to God’s plan, why is his life so tough? Pete must decide if living life God’s way is worthwhile if it doesn’t always result in a life of ease or happiness.
Arabella is one very confused lady. She certainly seems to have a severe case of indecision. She brought to mind that verse in James about a double-minded person that is “blown and tossed by the wind.” (James‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬) Just when I thought, “Now she’ll come to her senses and understand which direction to go,” she would falter and backpedal faster than a carriage whose horses are spooked. Thank goodness for Hedlund’s author’s notes. Hedlund assures us she’s aware we 21st-century readers might have difficulty understanding a 19th-century English woman’s hesitation to step outside of societal norms. By the novel’s end, Arabella develops a very strong spine and I wondered if I would be that courageous.
This is a nonlinear story, so we are fed a bit of the present story, then a memory bite of the past. Eventually, the dichotomous storyline is completed after much danger, soul-searching, and exciting adventures with a few clean romantic kisses, plus a nice ending twist.
Perhaps the players I most admired stayed in the background. Mercy taught Arabella so much by her example. Mrs. Moresby and Hayward were ladies I really wanted to meet and enjoy knowing.
One other note. Hedlund’s historical research is impeccable and a reader can learn a great deal about Victoria in the 1860s.
Notable Quotables:

“He’ll give you courage like no other can.”

”I always figured if God thinks the condition of a person’s heart matters more, then I should, too.”

”She’d been satisfied with eating crumbs in her relationships when there were feasts that awaited if she just had enough courage to partake.”

”...when we stand up against injustice, we’ll likely suffer for doing the right thing.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Bethany House through NetGalley. This in no way influences my opinions, which are solely my own.

The Runaway Bride is a typical historical romance but lacked depth. The characters seemed stiff and the romance seemed to focus more on the characters physical attraction than anything else. I had a hard time finishing.

The Brideship part of history is one that has intrigued me for awhile, and ye I still don't know much about it. So I was thrilled when this book came up or review.

It was definitely interesting. The plot, while predictable, was still engaging, and I enjoyed reading of Arabella's exploits with the baker. The courtship of Arabella, and the love triangle, were even enjoyable, and served to aid the story along, not slow it down, as happens sometimes.

The attitude of the settlers towards the Indians were hostile, and I hadn't read about the small pox epidemic in Canada before. It was heartbreaking, to say the least, and I was glad to see Arabella's strength of character in caring for one such orphan despite severe back lash.

Romantically-wise, there were a few parts I skimmed over. One bedroom scene, in the middle of the night, when a friend -- also an Indian -- comes for a visit and catches them together. Granted they weren't doing anything, but still -- it was too close, and too detailed, if you get my meaning. There was a part int eh midst fo that that *did* further the story -- my initial skimming session turned into an almost-read session when I realized I was missing vital information. So, it was needful, but more discreetness would have been appreciated!

Because of this, and the several kisses, I would definitely say that this would be a book for older young adults from a conservative home -- maybe 18 or so would be good to read it, with parents discretion.

To my older friends, who are okay with romance, this is definitely a book I'd recommend for the historical value.

I am thankful to the publisher for a copy of this book!

Wealthy Arabella Lawrence flees to British Columbia on a bride ship still wearing the scars of past mistakes. One of the few single women in the boomtown, she immediately has suitors, but she is determined not to find herself trapped again by a poor choice.

Vying for her hand are two very different men. Lieutenant Richard Drummond is a gentleman in the Navy and is held in high esteem. Peter Kelly is the town's baker and has worked hard to build a thriving business. He and Drummond not only compete for Arabella's affections, but clash over their views of how the natives should be treated in the midst of a smallpox outbreak.

As Arabella begins to overcome her fears, she discovers someone in dire need--a starving girl abandoned by her tribe. Intent on helping the girl, Arabella leans on Peter's advice and guidance. Will she have the wisdom to make the right decision or will seeking what's right cost both her and Peter everything?

This was a book about choices. Does Arabella think she is above marrying a baker who is below her station or should she try for the Lieutenant who is a gentleman. She is already running away from an arranged marriage. There was also the issue of propriety when Pete and Arabella were alone. Christian standards were expressed. This was a good clean book and I recommend it.

I was given this book by Bethany House Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

Courage. Redemption. Love. Forgiveness. Humility. Belonging. Mercy. These are the themes in this story.

I enjoyed this novel for the most part, but there is one thing I would change. I’ll share it at the end of my review.

A woman, Arabella Lawrence, who is brought up as a lady, is forced into a horrible betrothal, but courageous enough to flee in time.

A man who was brought up to fear the Lord, but fled like the prodigal son from the Bible. But God found him, and Peter turned completely back to God. Peter had the heart of a missionary, even if he wasn’t one in the story. Constantly reaching out to those who were less fortunate. Even though he didn’t really have all that much. But because the law at that time was on the opposite side of the natives that Peter helped … well, Pete found himself in prison quite often because of it. But his heart of mercy for the natives is one of the things that made him such a likeable character, and had me cheering for him to be the hero.

And let’s not forget Drummond. Horrible man. And that’s all I will say about him. Well done, Jody, making that man unlikeable.

I don’t want to spoil anything for readers, but my absolute favorite chapter of this story was the final one. The humility, forgiveness, redemption and reconciliation melted my heart. Absolutely beautifully done.

What I didn’t love. This is hard to say, because I know not all will agree with me, but I have to be honest. There was too much chemistry … a wedding was needed a whole lot sooner. More chaperoning was definitely necessary. And even though they didn’t kiss until later, the hero couldn’t quite keep his hands to himself. If he was going to honor her as he seemed to want to, he should have kept more propriety between them. And although I appreciated his struggle (as a man who was once a womanizer), I felt he took advantage of Arabella. I found that one thing made it harder to like him.

For that reason, I’ll give it a 4 star. Otherwise I would have given it the full 5 stars—which I would love to have done. Because overall, it was a great story.

Another lovely book in the Bride Ship series. This is Arabella's story - who we got to meet in book 1 - while getting to quick up-date with character's from book one to see how they are getting along. Such a compelling story that delves into the history - the bride ships, a smallpox outbreak - and a sweet romance along the way.

This is an entertaining Christian historical novel that highlights a unique period of history in Vancouver in the year 1862. The stories of the real women who came over on the Bride Ships must have been interesting, and I like how Jody Hedlund has represented the brides in this series. Arabella represented the “upper class” type of bride. I liked Arabella. She didn’t look down on the other women who came from a different economic status as her own, but accepted people on their own merits. Pete, although he was a charmer, was a genuinely good guy. Arabella’s attracted to him, but was understandably looking for someone from the social status she knew back home in England. The author also works into the storyline the smallpox outbreak that occurred during that time and how it affected the Indians. I’ve enjoyed this series and would recommend it to those readers who enjoy Christian Historical fiction.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Eeeeep! Another Jody Hedlund Book!!! She is a FOREVER favorite and I will literally read anything she writes! A fabulous FABULOUS escape from this crazy life right now. Although it DID take me much longer than normal to finish...due to life upending...this story is rich and delicious. Like biting into a piece of rich dark chocolate that melts on your tongue.

The land...the people...the story...the romance...(Can I just say...baking bread...mmmmhmmm)...Jody Hedlund has a way of portraying the emotions and feelings in a way that touches the very core of your soul.

Pete Kelly...All the feels y'all! His compassionate heart. His sense of justice. His passion and determination. Combine that with the God-fearin' man that he is...and WOW! Where is my fan???

Arabella comes to British Columbia battered and bruised with scars deeper than the eye could see. Her self worth was shattered and she believes that all she has left is to find a "good match" among the upper-class society of this new land.

If you are in need of a GOOD read...One that speaks to your heart. Portrays beauty in a multitude of ways. And makes you weak in the knees...Grab The Runaway Bride now! (Kindle version recommended for immediate enjoyment since Amazon is delaying delivery of most orders right now. 😭)

I received a complimentary copy of The Runaway Bride from the publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Any book by Jody Hedlund is good book and this one is no different! I had never heard about the British bride ships that sailed to Vancouver, British Columbia back in the mid 1800's so this was a great way to learn more history while enjoying a fun read. The Runaway Bride is the second book in this series and is about Arabella, a middle class lady who meets Pete, the baker, At first she feels Lieutenant Drummond would be her best choice, because he is from a higher class as well. But as time goes by she realizes they don't always see eye to eye.

The Runaway Bride has both action and romance, This is a book you won't want to miss!

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.
