Very well translated and although clearly academic it is also highly readable. It is clear, informative and very much worth a read. |
While the idea of collating and reproducing the ancient sources to give a fuller picture of the Persian War is a welcome one, the format of the book works against it. Sources are reproduced in passages of varying lengths, predominantly Herodotus interspersed with some ancient authors, with additional commentary by the author. At times, Shepherd adds valuable insight, at others, it felt like I might as well just be reading the Herodotus. The format is bitty and repetitive, it's hard slog to push through it. Far from bringing the 'clash of arms vividly to life', it does the exact opposite. A handy book to dip perhaps, but not a good read. ARC via Netgalley |

This book is a perfect follow up for anyone who has read Herodotus. I have always felt that of all the ancient historians Herodotus was the most readable as long as you took somethings with a grain of salt. This book helps with that aspect. I would strongly reccomend it for any lover of Herodotus. |
A long book. Good for those who have an interest in Herodotus, Persian war or that area. Nice analysis of his work. |
As a history teacher and classicist I was thrilled to get a copy of this book and I was not disappointed. The subject is treated sensitively and with great understanding. The author I believe is a military historian and the insights he offers are fascinating. |
