Jane has told her best friend Marnie seven lies, and as she “confesses” each lie we learn a little bit more about Jane and her childhood, and the things that have shaped her and that have prompted the lies of the title. I was sucked into the beginning of this book, and couldn’t wait to find out the particulars of each lie. Jane is, on one hand, a bit pathetic, and clingy, but on the other hand, there are some pretty compelling reasons for her attachment to Marnie. The writing is well-paced, but some of the characters could use a little more fleshing out, and the journalist character seems to have been added simply as a plot device, a way to carry the story forward, but without much conviction. At first, I was annoyed by the seemingly random “asides” in Jane’s story, but there comes a point in the story when the reason for the asides become clear, and that is when the story begins to carry a little more suspense. A well-done debut, and Elizabeth Kay is definitely an author to watch!

Though this felt very promising, I feel like this book fell a little flat. I thought it was beautifully written. And I feel like this is absolutely an author to watch whose books I will continue to seek out. 3.5/5 stars for me.

This was in the genre psychological thriller, but it really wasn't. I disliked the narrative style, and never really felt any great tension at all.

I hate to say it, but I don't know who'd I recommend this novel to.

Ugh. I despised the narrative format/technique. And it wasn't a "psychological" thriller as described.
Pass on this one, or at least get it from a library if u must read it.

This book has been marketed as a psychological thriller, but it didn't really have the tension and twists I was expecting. It's more like a slow burn in which the author gradually develops the main character until her true self is revealed. It is definitely dark and creepy. I did particularly enjoy the ending, which I felt was suspenseful.

I was extremely annoyed by this 4th wall thing the narrator kept doing...until I realized she wasn't addressing me at all. Unraveling the who there was absolutely the highlight of this faintly sinister novel.
