A cute and sweet story about a little boy (Ollie) and a very large dog (Augustus), who are the very best of friends. They do everything together; sometimes they annoy and irritate each other, but they always make up. Ollie becomes worried when it's time for him to start school- won't Augustus get lonely while Ollie's away? He hatches a plan to find Augustus a friend, but none of the potential dogs they audition work out, which makes Ollie sad and worried when he goes to school. Augustus, however, is just fine, for he knows Ollie will always come home.
This is not exactly a new story, there are variations on the first day of school/separation anxiety theme, and I feel bad for Ollie and hope he doesn't continue to worry, but this is a good addition to the trope. The illustrations are what really make this book- the soft, sepia-toned art, tinted with pale splashes of color, has an adorable, sketchy feel to it, and tells the story of the friendship of Ollie and Augustus so well. The end papers show their history together, from babyhood (and puppyhood) to the present day, and the love between the two is apparent throughout the story, and the warm ending will bring all the happy fells.

Ollie is a small and Augustus is his very large pet and companion. Despite the disparity in size, the two do 'most things' together. although Ollie prefers digging while Augustus likes to collect sticks. And sometimes Ollie is annoying to Augustus, and other times, Augustus can be irritating, but even when they get mad at each other, they usually make up by lunchtime. Now, however, it's time for Ollie to begin school and he worries that Augustus might be lonely with him gone all day. The solution - advertise for a companion for Augustus. But none of the dogs who show up are just what Ollie is looking for. On his first day of school, Ollie spends time sad and worrying about Augustus. And Augustus? How does he spend Ollie's first day of school? Well, not the way Ollie thought he would, that's for sure. This is an amusing look at separation anxiety and school, and shows readers that even if circumstances change, best friends are always there. The visually pleasing pencil, watercolor, and gouache illustrations are done in a palette of earth tones, and each one compliments the spare text, capturing all aspects of Ollie and Augustus's days together. A perfect book for helping sooth first day of school jitters.

Ollie's best friend is Augustus, despite his size and the fact he's a dog. They do absolutely everything together. When Ollie has to start school, he's worried about Augustus being lonely, so he takes out an advert for a doggy friend, with some funny responses. Ultimately, none of these are the perfect fit and Ollie is sad. The book has a happy ending. It turns out Augustus is quite happy at home and has plenty of things to do. Rather than being about replacing friendships or spending all your time together, it's a book about strong bonds and how you can do things apart and still have a great friendship. It's a lovely story about both friendship and bonding with animals, with charming illustrations that are guaranteed to make children smile. The writing is simple and effective. I read this to my three year old who loved it.

Ollie and Augustus is the story of a pet who gets left behind when his owner goes to school. It's a story I've seen done before... and better. Still, it's not without its charm.

Ollie is a small boy. Augustus is a huge dog. When Ollie has to start school, he worries that Augustus will be lonely. So he puts out an ad for a new friend for Augustus. Unfortunately, all the dogs who answer the ad are... well, dogs. And nobody can replace Ollie in Augustus's mind.

Jean Reidy's Truman tells a very similar story about a child going to school and leaving their pet behind. I think I preferred that one a bit more. While Ollie and Augustus is slightly more reassuring to kids who are worried about their pets, I almost felt like it went a bit too far. Ollie spends the day worrying, while Augustus has a fun day playing and relaxing without even seeming to realize his boy is gone. (Is anybody going to tell the poor kid that he doesn't need to give himself an ulcer worrying about his dog?)

The illustrations are kind of cute. I have no idea why Augustus is the size of a small car, but it kind of adds to the quirkiness of the book.

Overall, this is an okay story. It would be good for kids who are worried about leaving their pets behind when they go to school. I might pair it with Truman for a bit of extra reassurance.

Ollie and Augustus by Gabriel Evans is precious. While it's not a groundbreaking story, my students love books about dogs, and I can already think of the conversations we'll have while reading this book together!

This picture book is so pure. It shows how much a child and dog bond. They care so much about each other and even though life is changing, they still have each other. The illustrations are adorable and I hope they make an Augustus plush because I need one in my life. This can make for a great going to school book if your child is worried about your dog. I would take the time to read this book because it will just warm your heart and maybe go run and hug/pet your furry friend.

When Ollie starts school, he is concerned that his dog/best pal Augustus will be lonely, and interviews prospective companions for him. Endearing, humorous illustrations of boy-and-dog hijinks.

This is a cute story about a little boy who's starting school and a big dog who may or may not be lonely while his friend is gone. The story was very fun and sweet, but it was the illustrations that really stood out. I laughed out loud multiple times while reading this story!! I really think kids and parents will all enjoy this book... there's something for everyone!

This was a really good children's book about staying friends even when you're apart. Ollie is worried that his dog, Augustus, will be lonely while he's at school. The characters are adorable a d the illustrations are great.

I was worried, while reading this, that the book would come down to trying to find a new friend for Augustus, the giant of a dog, and that would be the point of the story, but the point of the story is that friendships can survive being away at school for the day.

Ollie does everything with his dog, despite he being small and and Augustus being huge.

And school is not going to break up their friendship.

Which is an excellent story to tell young children who are afraid that their pets are going to miss them while they are gone. Yes, they will miss you, but they will be waiting for you when you come home again.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

Ollie and Augustus are the best of friends despite their differences. Soon Ollie will be headed off to kindergarten and he worries his best friend will be lonely. To help Augustus, Ollie sets his friend up on a series of doggie dates, but will he be able to find an adequate day time replacement? Ollie and Augustus is a cute book that lets kids explore anxiety over beginning a new school as well as looking at the qualities that make a good friend. The pictures are simple, yet compelling and an air of whimsy to the adorable story. I would recommend this book for toddlers up through early elementary.

This was a terrific story about a young boy, Ollie, and his rather large dog, Augustus. Ollie and Augustus are good friends and get along well. Ollie worries that Augustus will be lonely when he begins attending school. He tries to find another friend for Augustus, with no luck. Ollie worries about Augustus, but Augustus has a great time by himself. He feels safe because he knows Ollie will come home and they will still be good friends.
This book has applications for social emotional learning. It is about relationships and how Augustus has developed the trust in his friendship with Ollie that keep him secure even when Ollie is gone.

Thank you to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really loved this book. The illustrations are fun and the story is very warm. A little boy Ollie has a best friend named Augustus who is a huge dog. The book outlines their relationship and all the things they do together. Ollie has to go to school away from Augustus and is worried the entire day. Meanwhile, Augustus is happy and cozy at home and is sure that Ollie will be back soon, which is just what he needs. This is just a sweet, warm story that I think kids will enjoy.

This is a super cute book about a boy, his dog, and their friendship. Ollie worries so much when he has to start school and has to leave Augustus alone at home. I love the illustrations that match and enhance the text perfectly. I read this via NetGalley, courtesy of the publisher.

This is a great book about a small boy and a big dog. They do everything together all the time. Until Ollie starts school. He tries to find Augustus a dog friend to keep him company while he’s gone. I loved the unexpected ending of this book!

Ollie and Augustus is a very cute story of one boy's pursuit to find a companion for their dog while at school. Great story for any preschooler or kindergartner leaving their pet behind for the first time.

Cute book! Love how the author uses the friendship between a dog and a child to help with anxiety and school jitters.

Ollie and Augustus are two best friends. They love doing everything together - from painting to gathering sticks. When Ollie begins school, he becomes worried Augustus will be lonely during the day without him. Therefore, he creates a "Wanted" poster for a day companion. None of the dogs who show up are the right fit, though. Once at school, Ollie is worried about Augustus being all alone but he truly has nothing to worry about.

Cute story-line. Illustrations are okay. Would recommend for children ages 3-6 who are worried about going back to school without their pets.
