This ended up not working for me. Something about the writing just didn't capture me, and also, I didn't feel like the two main characters had much chemistry? Maybe as friends they were ok, but anything else just didn't feel authentic. Not a bad book at all, juts fell kind of flat.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of this e-book in exchange for a honest review. I gave this read 3 stars.

Marva spends her day helping Duke make his vote count. They encounter a lot of issues throughout the day.

I liked the spotlight on Black representation, interracial relationships, importance of voting at 18, and being active in politics.

I didn’t like that it covers just one day, the side story about a missing cat (it took away from the story), the weird love story (it was predictable and they knew each other for less than 24 hours), and the name of Duke’s band. Lol.

I also feel like if I had read this in high school, I would have related more and swooned over their one day adventure and relationship but unfortunately, these days I’m more realistic.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I loved the subject and themes in this book especially because they are current event topics. The romantic story was sweet but parts felt like a Saturday morning cartoon PSA that was painful to watch over and over and over again.

Another great read from Brandy Colbert. This book manages to engage with the political and personal lives of young Black characters in a way that feels authentic, individual, and never preachy. I think it also manages to name the violence and trauma experienced by these young Black people, while keeping the focus on a "day in the life" story filled with romance, low-stakes conflict, and interpersonal relationships. It's touches on serious topics while still allowing characters joy and youthfulness. I can hand this to any student who likes contemporary YA and know they will enjoy it. Bonus points: Just like her young characters, Colbert's parent/adult characters are never archetypes or one-note; She writes with humanity and authenticity for all of her characters. Recommend for purchase along with her other titles.

I was given a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Marva has been active in getting the vote out movements through school. When she goes to cast her vote at the polls and sees a guy being turned away from the polls, she makes it her sole purpose to help him cast his vote on election day. After several different polling locations, different things getting in the way, Duke is finally able to vote. However, after all they've been through, they may not part ways just yet. #TheVotingBooth #Netgalley #brandyColbert

Brandy Colbert is seriously THE BEST and this book was fantastic. This is a cute contemporary romance as well as a strong statement about voter suppression and race in America.

Yes, I will use The Voting Booth in classrooms. Brandy Colbert has quickly become one of my favorite authors and this book did not disappoint. The Voting Booth kept me interested and ready to read on. Colbert's character development and the way she moved the plot was fantastic. The relevance of this book this past year just added to the power of Colbert's work. I purchased a copy for my ELA teachers and my Social Studies teachers to have in their classroom libraries.

I wasn’t sure what to think going into this book. The election and everything political was in the news 24/7 so I was a little hesitant to pick it up. However, this was an excellent read and entirely relevant for the past year. I enjoyed it immensely.

The Voting Booth is a short but interesting novel about the obstacles Black Americans have to overcome and contend with to ensure they get the right to vote. For someone with almost zero knowledge of how polling stations work in the US it was quite an eye opening novel.
This is the second Brandy Colbert novel I have read and I've really enjoyed both. The Voting Booth is definitely an important read, but I think it misses out on being a powerful novel in YA fiction. At times the voting situation felt like it took a back seat to some of the other events in the story although Marva did initiate some important discussions.
I'll definitely be reading more Brandy Colbert novels.

A really cute realistic fiction/ romance perfect for election year! I appreciate how the author wove in themes of racism but didn't make it the key focus of this story, because it is so important to feature realistic fiction in the classroom library that represents people of color in day-to-day stories. I did feel like the romance between the two main characters was perhaps a little rushed just because of the fact that one of them was already in a relationship when the story began, but it was still an enjoyable outcome!

I don’t usually like books about politics but I liked this one a lot because it was told just over one day. I think it hit on a ton of important topics in such a short time frame and I really liked it

I really really enjoyed this book and they way it managed to take a neutral stance, despite the climate of the election that was happening about the time this book came out. It touched on a lot of wonderful topics, but it still managed to have an adorable and almost carefree air to it. Wonderful!

honestly, i didn't go into this book expecting I'd love it as much as i did. i feel like all of the books about voting are why to romance heavy, and they aren't 100 percent about voting. but, the whole book is all about voting and how all younger people need to get out there and vote, since they can change the world. and that is something i really liked, since a lot of them don't really deal with them actually voting, its just a topic of conversation. and i also really liked the romance. since it wasn't punch in your face, and it wasn't the main thing that was happening, it was like a little side thing, and it wasn't the biggest issue in the book. but, i also really liked the whole cat thing, even if it wasn't that big of a thing, and was kind of stupid, but it was still cute. and thankfully the cat didn't die.

I received this as an ARC and loved it so much, I decided to purchase it for myself.

A lot happened in a day ! I loved the real ness of the characters. I enjoyed the writing and I hope there’s a part 2 to this book. I recommend for all. This book tackles voting, the “fear” of being pulled over by the cops, death in a family, the whole nine. I loved it

Earlier this month I picked up The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert, a young adult novel that follows two teens on their day-long mission to cast a ballot. Marva Sheridan is incredibly passionate about voting, and when she sees Duke Crenshaw turned away at the poll, she decides that she’s going to do whatever possible to help him vote. This is my first Brandy Colbert book, and it definitely makes me want to read more from her. Colbert does a fantastic job of exploring the importance of voting and the barriers that people face when trying to cast their votes (covering injustices big and small such as the fact that Americans aren’t given time off to vote or polling places being shutdown without notice). It was timely, poignant, and gave me the hope and energy that I hoped it would!

I really wanted to love this book - the timeliness of it, the plot, the cover. Unfortunately, it didn't land well. It was incredibly predictable and the characters were nothing original (which in the YA world is a must). The book got super political which is tricky for students who aren't yet old enough to vote. Thank you for allowing me to review this - it just didn't get much love from me.

It's Election Day and Marva can not wait to get out and vote before school. At the voting booth, she overhears a poll worker telling a boy he is not registered, even though he believes he is. Marva has been campaigning and preparing for this election for the past two years and steps in to help this boy - Duke. Duke thinks he might be registered at his old address and after his car doesn't start, Marva agrees to help him, after both deciding to skip school to do so. However the day doesn't go quite as planned. Marva's cat goes missing and she has been having relationship troubles; whereas Duke, is still dealing with the loss of his brother and his parents divorce while trying to get ready for his band's show that night. Over the course of Election Day, Marva and Duke set on a journey to vote, find a cat, and work out their own problems.

This book was really great! It was able to perfectly show the issues within the American voting system and the government in power. It deals with so many important issues and topics such as the importance of voting and having your voice heard, racism and racial discrimination, loss of loved ones, and toxic relationships. I loved the way the characters had their backstory filled in through brief flashbacks, it for sure helped add to the story. The characters were super likeable and it was great to see their day play out.

I was not the biggest fan of the writing. At points it felt a little too juvenile for a book about main characters who were 18. It did not take away too much from the novel but did affect it a little. I also could tell what would (and did come) at the end and I wasn't super mad about it but kind of wish it didn't come so fast.

I have never read a Brandy Colbert novel before and I can not say that I am disappointed. Would for sure recommend this novel to be read by all!

This book was so cute and perfect for election season. It gave me hope but also talks about real issues people face when just trying to cast their vote. I loved the characters and found them to be complex while still being just teens. I’ll read anything Brandy Colbert writes! She’s a fantastic YA author and I can wait to read what she writes next.

Obsessed with this book. First, I want to be friends with both of these teens. Second, I loved reading about characters so excited to vote in an election year. Their families were great secondary characters, and I loved every second of this madcap journey to exercise the right to vote!

This book was a super cute read ( and much needed break from the ACTUAL election)

Marva and Duke were the most adorable couple. I loved their banter and their passion for what they believed in. I liked that although this is a YA romance the author brought to light very important issues. 10 out of 10 definitely recommend 👌
