I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

This started with a body found in a burning cottage, but then extended back to a past train robbery, diamond heists etc. It was all very complicated with a cast of thousands. The hero, Jack, was a bit of a muddled character; I think we were meant to be fond of him, but I found him irresponsible and petulant. I would only recommend this book to people who think old-style East End gangsters are admirable 'in their own way' and who think armed robbery is brave and exciting.

I enjoyed reading this book. It had a good story to it. I liked the variety of characters in it. I have read other books by this author and liked them too. I look forward to the next book by this author.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This is the start of a new series about a British policeman, Jack Warr, struggling to find himself and who he wants to be. The body of a man found in a burning building leads Jack to two unsolved mysteries from the past and a mystery about his own past. The story was interesting and did keep the reader wanting to know more. The mystery wasn’t really such a mystery to me as I read but it was still a fun story. The perspectives changed between Jack and various characters in the mystery and was at times a little confusing as some were clearly marked as changes and some weren’t. All in all this was a good story that has inspired me to look up more by this author.

A suspicious fire at Rose Cottage reveals a murder victim and a huge amount of cash from a train robbery 24 years ago.. DC Jack Warr has recently moved to London with his partner Maggie. This cold case has major implications for Jack. Having read She's Out the story of the great train robbery I loved this follow up. The characters are so real and loveable. I really wanted them to escape with their hail but I also wanted Jack to get his promotion. Absolutely brilliant cleverly written page turner. This is again Lynda La Plante at her best and I will definitely be looking out for more Jack Warr cases.

I really enjoyed this British crime novel. The story was unique and the hero wasn’t perfect, I liked that he had his flaws. I also liked the fact that the story involved some very strong women. It was a fast paced story that kept me intrigued the entire time. This is the first book in a new series that I think will really take off. I highly recommend this book to all those looking for a can’t put down novel.

Lynda La Plante's book tend to be hit or miss for me. I think that "Buried" managed to be more middling than most of her other works. I had higher hopes but it was an overall okay read.

DC Jack Warr is the main character in the first book of a new series by Lynda LaPlante. The book is fast paced and many characters were introduced in the first few chapters. I wish I had started with a character chart. I found I needed to go back and write down something. Jack and his girlfriend, Maggie moved from Devon to London to advance Maggie’s career as a doctor. Jack seems a little lost with no gumption to get a promotion. He was adopted and finds out his adoptive father is dying of cancer. He receives information about his real parents.

The police unit receives a case where a woman just released from prison is found dead in a fire in a cottage. There is also a lot of charred money found. Does this have something to do with a train robbery of millions in 1995. I was quickly drawn to Jack and I really liked Maggie. I think this series would make a great series. At times I felt like I was actually reading a script. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Thank you Zaffire and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was so excited when I found out that she would be starting a new series and she doesn't disappoint. It starts out with a bang and just doesn't let up. It's a must read. It's heart pounding and exhilarating so don't pass it up. Happy reading!

"On the obliterated sofa, part-melted into the springs, lay a dead body, charred and blackened beyond recognition."

A burned body is found after a fire gutted Rose Cottage in rural Aylesbury together with millions in banknotes.
36 Year old DC Jack Warr is part of the team who looks into the case because it seems to be linked to a train robbery that took place years before. How is this linked to The Grange and 5 women who were staying there at the time of the robbery and what happened to the money?

Jack is at a crossroad. He still has to find his passion and is trying to juggle a lot at the same time. His adopted father is dying and he has decided to find out more about his real father. This is interfering with him doing his job properly and he is more than once in trouble because of this. Will he be able to find all the answers?

It is the start of a new series and I really enjoyed it. I found the characters well rounded and the storyline very interesting. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bonnier Zaffre USA for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

New series, New protagonist. Detective Jack Warr, adopted, searching for family and a place in his career; is on the case of a train robbery when a burned body is discovered along with charred bank notes. Old habits, old nemesis, old wounds will either make or break Jack, in this thrilling book, by Lynda La Plante. This book is character rich, family loyalty and secrets aplenty. Searching for identity is a theme which will affect each character in kind. S
I enjoyed this book and anticipate a warm response to this new series from a well-known a beloved author.

Buried
By: Lynda La Plante

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
I'm a fan of the author's previous work with the Widow's trilogy. Those books were fantastic, so I had high hopes for Buried. Fortunately, I was not disappointed. The character of Jack is great. He is strong, intelligent and likeable. The story had action and surprises without being overdone. This is a great start to a new series, and I recommend for fans!

Absolutely loved this first in a new series. The Widows trilogy was amazing and the fact that the legendary Dolly Rawlins makes an appearance in this book is extra special. Lynda La Plante has a way of writing that just gets my gripped. I can't wait for the next Jack Warr book!

Buried by Lynda La Plante.
DC Jack Warr and his girlfriend Maggie have just moved to London to start a new life together. Though charming, Jack can't seem to find his place in the world - until he's drawn into an investigation that turns his life upside down.
A brilliant read. Lots of action and suspense. Had no idea who did it.
I liked Jack. He was my favourite. 5*.

A new series populated with some characters familiar to readers from Lynda LaPlante's book The Widows which was a 5 star read. As she introduces us to this new community and their concerted efforts to be the first to claim the lost millions. When their actions result in murder, a new police investigator will keep everyone, friend or foe, on their toes. As he moves closer to bringing the criminals to justice, Ms LaPlante will throw us a couple of clues that prove again that she's well worth my precious reading time.

In this first book in a new series, LaPlante introduces us to new characters, including Detective Constable Jack Warr, an unambitious copper who should have taken the sergeant’s exam years earlier. Jack, and his doctor girlfriend, have moved to London from Devon to further her career. DCI Ridley decides to take a chance on Jack and hires him to be a member of his small team of detectives. When the team is called on to be part of the investigative team of a fire that includes a charred body and millions in bank notes, some of them expired, Jack comes alive at the challenge to solve the crimes.

This book has all the makings of becoming a popular ongoing series – unique well-drawn story line, complex characters, and a mystery all set in England. The author introduces a bevy of characters in the early pages of the book without focusing on any of them and not giving enough information for any reader to begin to form a liking for her characters. She soon sorts them all out. The book starts off slowly but is soon racing along.

If you love starting a new series with book one, this is the book for you and should be high on your to-be-read list. If you love British procedurals, this is the book for you. You may find yourself wanting the second in this series to come sooner—like next week—rather than later.

My thanks to Zafire and NetGalley for an eARC.

An arson murder and a cold case involving a bank heist opens this new series by Lynda La Plante. DC Jack Warr is a classic- he's struggling with a move to London, his love for Maggie, his ailing father, and now the idea that his father is not his bio-dad. Oh, and he has a real twister on his hands. Working with Laura Wade and Anik Joshi, he delves into long held secrets under the direction of DCI Simon Ridley. This is a fun team I'm looking forward to spending time with in the future- their interactions feel very realistic and while this is only the start, you can feel the roundness of the characters. Maggie is also a treat. No spoilers on the central procedural part of the mystery, which involves old enemies. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A very good read.

*received for free from netgalley for honest review* First heard of this book on bookish first and later found it on netgalley, I did really like this book and only want to read the first book in this series even more but I did have one big problem with this book and it was the excessive fatphobic comments. they were just never ending and so so uncalled for! giving it a 4 star but only bc im rounding up from 3.5.

Although I have seen Lynda La Plante's TV work I don't recall ever having read one of her books so I was excited about this ARC.

As I knew La Plante's name I did have high expectations and, while I have some critiques they are small and I generally enjoyed this novel.

Overall, the book was fast paced with an intricate plot and many key characters who the reader gets to know throughout the course of the book. The characterisation is strong and I am keen to read more about DC Jack Warr.

The plot is also strong but I did take issue with Jack somehow shoehorning his own personal mystery into the crime he is investigating professionally. It just seemed that the connection was plucked out of thin air and he lucked out when there was indeed a link.
Maybe I just missed something but when challenged by his boss about what he was investigating he made up that it was relevant to the case. Just seemed a bit too convenient and tenuous to me.

Aside from that, it was a page turner of a read and I really enjoyed getting under the skin of each of the characters.

Thanks to Bonnier Zaffre and Netgalley for this advanced readers copy.

I’ve not read any of Lynda La Plante’s books, I have however been captivated by several TV series featuring her work, so was quite keen to get my teeth into this one, a new detective series featuring Jack Warr.

I enjoyed the plot, great plot, but didn’t enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. I’m not sure what I was expecting however this didn’t keep me turning the pages as quickly as I thought it would. Maybe I should have read the Widows series first?

To be honest the storyline dragged on a little bit and I had to keep going back as there are so many characters to get an appreciation and understanding of, I kept getting confused, as to who was who, so it took me some time to get into the book.

What did impress me in particular was how seamlessly the story changed on a regular basis as there are two storylines. There is plenty to keep you guessing, lots of twists and turns.

I enjoyed reading about the relationship between Jack and his partner, Maggie, and his parents, who adopted him when he was a toddler. Very loving and caring relationships, which brought a human element to the book. Adding a personal thread.

Excerpts which touched me include:

‘They sniggered like naughty schoolkids, thinking they were being completely silent when, in fact, they were making a terrible racket.’

‘Suddenly, his laughing turned to crying and he had no idea how to stop. Safe in the knowledge that he was surrounded by strangers, he let the tears roll.’

‘“DC Jack Warr. Remember the name. You ever need anything, you let me know.” By the time Jack left the room, Darren was a different person.’

Interesting end, did I expect it, no.

Hopefully Darren will become a key character in the subsequent issues of the series....

Would I recommend, yes, however no where near as gripping as Martina Cole for me. Will I read more of Lynda La Plante, yes, of course..... she’s an award winning author and screen writer so I need to read more to appreciate why.

4**** From me.

Thanks to Netgalley, Zaffre and the author for this ARC provided in exchange for this unbiased review.

This is a story of when the past meets the present as well as good versus evil in the first book in this new series. A murder links present to the past and DC Jack Warr needs to figure how and he will get quite the surprise when he finds out the many ways.

The characters in this book clearly delineate how the past and present are represented and the smoothness in which the story changes direction between those two times is fantastic. There is plenty of action, suspense, mystery, and whodunnit to engage even the most picky reader and the ending will either take you by surprise or having you go "Yes, I thought so".

I had heard of Lynda La Plante before and have some of her books on my tbr but hadn't read one until now so I can tell you I will definitely be reading another book of hers soon as well as stay on the look out in the next book in this series.
