An omnibus of stories is always going to have good and bad in it. Personally, I liked the way that these were all linked together but there were certainly some that piqued my interest more than others. Of course, because they are novellas rather than full-length books there is something of the Mills and Boon vibe to them where insta-love and Happily ever afters are the order of the day. but for a little escapism and some swooning heroes. I would recommend it.

Too busy to read the individual reviews of each story in this collection? Here’s the short version. I enjoyed The Time Traveler’s Desire, A Knight’s Desire, The Angel and The Prince, and Highlander in Her Dreams. All earned 5 star ratings. The Wicked Lady was disappointing and would have been better left out of this collection. I give it 2 stars. The Angel and the Prince was one of the better stories I’ve read in a long time, earning 5++ stars. I loved it!

More Dangerous Heroes:
The Time Traveler's Desire - Amy Jarecki
5 stars
I was surprised by how quickly and completely I was caught up in this story. As historical fiction, it captured my imagination and carried me into the past. I loved the characters: Lachlan, Christina, Andrew, Sir Boyd, Hamish. All of these characters, with the exception of Hamish, were multidimensional and intriguing. As the hero, Lachlan was the most compelling of all. The relationships he developed with Christina and Andrew were nuanced and relatable. I cannot find any fault with this book, neither in the writing nor in the plot.

The Wicked Lady - Brenda Jernigan
2 stars
Aside from the ridiculous plot, characters behaved in a manner that was unrealistic and incompatible with the time period. A few times, I considered skipping over this story to get to the next one, but I was intrigued by what was going to happen next (even though I thought it was silly). I’m embarrassed to say that I'm not really sure why I kept reading it. I am going to list some of the problems I had with the plot/writing, but there are likely to be SPOILERS:
Kristen’s hair is repeatedly described as a brilliant red with golden highlights, but then it’s described as auburn which is very different.
Kristen was kidnapped as a child. Why on earth would they keep her first and last name the same?! Also, if she was kidnapped so young and raised by English parents, why would she have such a strong Scottish accent?!
Writing was trite with phrases like: “he wouldn’t have her any other way,” and “he loved every minute of it.”
It drove me crazy that Kristen kept referring to Trevor’s grandmother as an “old bat.” Once might have been okay, but the phrase was used multiple times.
Trevor’s friend Rodney was at his wedding. So was Hagan. Much later, Trevor introduces Hagan and Rodney as if they’ve never met before.
Overall, the story wasn’t very good and wasn’t very well told either. I was disappointed.

A Knight’s Desire - Catherine Kean
5 stars
A really enjoyable story of soulmates, separated by a jealous rival. Detailed historic descriptions made me feel a part of the time period. The characters were wonderful, especially Ash. I loved that he called Rosetta Briar Rose. There was ample opportunity to add more angst to the story and I am glad the author kept it to a minimum. Knowing a happy ending would ensue made it easier to read when plans went awry.

The Angel and the Prince - Laurel O'Donnell
5++ stars
This was an amazing read and well worth the price of this collection. If you read nothing else here, read this one. It pits England’s Prince of Darkness (Bryce) against France’s Angel of Death (Ryen), enemies to lovers in the most literal sense of the word. Despite their clear attraction and respect for one another, there is no possibility that they can find happiness together, unless one is willing to become a traitor to his/her country. As knights, that is not an option for either of them, who value honor above all else (even love).

There were some wonderfully descriptive passages in this story:

“The red glow of the setting sun stung his eyes as the light attacked him through the windows in the hallway.” (I might have preferred that the light stabbed his eyes, but still, it was good.)

“Like the pickets of a fence, numerous armored guards were stationed on either side of a wide path that stretched from Bryce to the other end of the hall.” (Great depiction of a frightening scene)

“She did not feel the chilly air as it tried to wrap its frigid fingers around her bare shoulders; her body blazed with a blanket of anger.” (Love the personification!)

“Lightning ripped the sky in two, striking the barren field far off to their left. A cloud of dust exploded upward from the impact of the sharp spear of energy.” (An apt way to describe a bolt of lightning in a time when swords and spears were commonplace.)

“His entire body was caked with mud, his skin barely covered by a tunic and breeches that were so torn and ragged they hung from his thin limbs like an old cleaning cloth that had long outlived its usefulness.” (This description is so visceral, it made me shudder.)

The plot is full of twists and turns and I spent the better part of a day trying to complete daily tasks, but being continually pulled back to the story to find out what would happen next. I don’t want to say I wasted a day with my nose buried in my Kindle, but my family might argue that’s what I did. I was incapable of focusing on anything else until I had reached the end of this story, and when I did, I just said, “wow.” Seriously, WOW.

I had two issues with the plot, although by the time I reached the end, I was so blown away, I didn’t even care anymore. However, they are fairly significant so I feel I should mention them. Unfortunately, they are spoilers. I would never spoil a surprise simply to summarize a plot. I mention these because they are important “mistakes” and they happen to illuminate surprise plot points. I don’t think reading them in advance will ruin the book for any reader unless surprises are their only reason for reading. Personally, the quality of the writing itself is what makes or breaks a book for me. That said, here goes:

**SPOILERS**
Ryen is in a semi-comatose state for several days. In that time, I wondered how Bryce kept her hydrated and assured she remained clean (since she was clearly unable to use a bathroom while unconscious). Caring for someone who is unconscious involves a bit more than simply transporting their body from one place to another.
The English king killed all prisoners except Ryen because Bryce pleaded with him to allow him to take her. Later, we find out that he also has Lucien, Ryen’s brother. There is no logical reason why he would not have been killed with the others. I realize he needed to be there to further the plot, but it didn’t make any sense.
**END OF SPOILERS**

Toward the end, I was terribly worried that I was about to read a Romeo & Juliet ending. I love that story, but I was trembling as I pictured the events that would lead to the death of both of them. I just didn’t want that for them—they had already suffered so much. Thankfully, Laurel O’Donnell concocted a much better ending, one I could not have imagined, which was perfect. I’m afraid this book might get lost in a collection like this one, which is good but not outstanding (aside from this story). This is a story I want to tell everyone to read because the plot is incredible, the writing is evocative, and the characters are memorable. They came to life and I will not forget them. I’m sad to say good-bye to Bryce and Ryen, but I’m so glad they finally faced their love for one another and figured out their happily-ever-after.

Highlander in Her Dreams – Sue-Ellen Welfonder
5 stars
I didn’t think anything could compare to The Angel and the Prince; I was wrong. Despite the far-fetched concept of this story, I was thoroughly convinced that it could absolutely happen. Time travel was described in a way that was clear and believable. The love between Aiden and Kira was timeless and swoon-worthy. Furthermore, the descriptions regarding how one might react to sudden immersion in a world centuries apart from your own was touching and relatable.

I have never desired travelling back to a time devoid of indoor plumbing and hygiene, to name a few modern expectations. When the author describes the smells of medieval Scotland, I loved it: “Their scent leaned toward armpit and old leather. Wool and linen that hadn’t been washed in the saints knew how long, the whole charming effect enhanced by the slight whiff of stale ale, horse, and dog.” Phew! I really don’t want to go there.

Thank goodness for happy endings. I worried that Kira would be pulled away from Aiden, and on more than one occasion, it seemed likely. I also worried it would be one of those “it was all a dream” endings, which would have really aggravated me (and resulted in far fewer stars in the review). Instead, the book ended happily and with all loose ends resolved. However, I was a bit confused by the two characters depicted at the very end. I’m sure they were familiar characters from some other point in the story, but I couldn’t quite figure them out.

Great collection of authors and stories. Amazing stories about all different places and settings. Something for everyone.

I chose to read this collection of historical romances based solely upon the fact that all of the contributing authors are favorites of mine and that I had not read any of the books included. I am so glad I did since each book was fantastic! I wouldn't be able to choose a favorite if I were asked to. Amy Jarecki gives us a time-travel story with some truly unusual twists which is then followed by the delightful tale by Brenda Jernigan that has comedic undertones throughout. Catherine Kean brings us a bride abduction and a second-chance love story set in the time of the Crusades. Laurel O'Donnell never seems to disappoint and this is a medieval enemies-to-lovers story between a French lady knight and English warrior. The collection is completed with a tale of Highland magic, time-travel and a bit of sorcery involving visitation of true love in dreams. Just wonderful!

This is really an outstanding collection and the only negative aspect was that the formatting was not good at all, with words being hyphenated that shouldn't be and other types of disjointed sentences or beginnings to chapters. etc. which made the books difficult to read. If that ever gets corrected, this will be a set of books worth the highest rating.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

There were books in this collection and I enjoyed reading all of them! One book was one I had already read and liked it the first time that I read it but it is in a series and when you read the whole series, there are so many things that you understand better - so just a plug to read the whole The Ravenscraig Legacy series.

There were two books that while were entertaining, it was kind of hard to believe that two people from totally different world views in one, the other two different classes in society and yet they overcame this difference. The Wicked Lady had a pickpocket married to a duke and lots of drama throughout the book.

The other was The Angel and the Prince - this one was harder for me to get over their differences because she was French and led a French army and he was English leading an English army. They were back and forth captives to each other. She seemed more agreeable than Prince as he was just kind of a jerk rubbing her nose in the fact that he sat with two castle whores for his meals and she was at the servants table.

For the price of 99 cents, you are getting five books for a great price and if you like more than one of these books, then it was well worth it! I liked three of them more than the other two but all of them were entertaining and kept my interest in the romance, intrigue and drama.

More Dangerous Heroes

5 Historical novels with over 1600 pages of reading material to keep anyone happy for hours and hours. I read Amy Jarecki’s The Time Traveler’s Desire when it came out under a different title and gave it five stars – it is just as good today as it was then. I have met a few new authors and not having yet read all of the books look forward to reading the rest just as soon as I can. For the price this anthology is a bargain!

Thank you to NetGalley and BookBuzz for the ARC – This is my honest review.

4-5 Stars

USA Today & Award-Winning Authors present 1600 pages of Romance, Adventure, English Lords and Highland Warriors.

Welcome to More Dangerous Heroes. If you enjoyed the first Dangerous Heroes collection, you'll love this one. Bold, larger-than-life heroes are irresistible. Dark and dashing, they stride across the page, setting hearts ablaze as they whisk you away on thrilling journeys of adventure, passion, danger, and love.

Join them and their equally daring heroines as they lead you across mist-swept moors and moon-silvered seas, into the torch-lit great halls of medieval castles, and even along cobbled alleys in Regency London.

The Time Traveler's Desire - Amy Jarecki

A man's life can fall apart in an instant...

Tougher than oxhide, Lachlan Wallace can take about anything except a breakup call from his wife two minutes before competing in the Karate Championship of the World. Arriving home with a loss, he agrees to watch his uncle's cat over the holidays. Or so he thinks--until he awakes on a fourteenth-century battlefield beside a woman fighting for her life.

My Thoughts:
I grow more in love with books by Amy Jarecki with every new one I read. This is book #3 of the Guardian of Scotland series. I own one of the others in paperback, but this is the first one I've actually read of this series. I have read one other book by this author for review through Netgalley and although I gave that title a 5 star rating I still feel this one was better.
This tale begins with our hero who has recently received a break up call from his wife suddenly being thrust back in time to medieval Scotland. Talk about a surprising event.
His time in the past begins near Christmas and stretches out for a year with many things he previously did not know about himself and his linage being revealed along the way.
I found this to be among my favorite time travel books. I would compare it favorably with one of my favorite authors, Lynn Kurland books in her MacLeod Family Series like "A Dance Through Time" & "The Traveler".
As I indicated I gave "The Valiant Highlander" a 5 star rating and this one is it's equal if not better.
I am giving "The Time Traveler's Christmas" 5 stars as well.
I received a digital ARC of this book directly from the author before being approved for this title through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
My thanks goes out to Amy Jarecki for sending me an ARC while I was still awaiting approval for this title at NetGalley.

The Wicked Lady - Brenda Jernigan

When Trevor Claremont is blind-sided by a pickpocket, he isn't prepared for the feisty redhead whom he finds is one wicked lady. Seeing a solution to his pressing problem of finding a bride to please his dying grandmother, he offers her a deal: marriage to him...or prison, never imagining that this little cut-purse will also steal his heart.
My Thoughts;
I haven't read many Brenda Jernigan books in recent years but I did find this one very good in spite of formatting difficulties with this bindle. I would give this book a 4.5 star rating as an individual title.

A Knight's Desire - Catherine Kean

Lady Rosetta Montgomery is on her way to her wedding when she's kidnapped by a rider dressed all in black. She discovers her abductor is Lord Ashton Blakeley, her first and only true love, who left her to go on Crusade. Ash is a changed man now, with disfiguring scars and agonizing secrets. As rumors of lost Anglo-Saxon gold and treachery unfold, and Rosetta grows to understand the man Ash has become, will she help him fight for their love, or will the danger surrounding the hidden riches cost them all that they treasure?

This book was not a favorite but got 4 stars from me.

The Angel and The Prince - Laurel O'Donnell

In this exciting medieval romance, the French lady knight known as the Angel of Death wages a battle of wills and desires against her dreaded enemy -- the English warrior known as the Prince of Darkness.
This one was not my cup of tea. I will not rate.

Highlander in Her Dreams - Sue-Ellen Welfonder They met through Highland Magic, can true love keep them together?

After stepping through a magical gateway, Kira Bedwell finds herself in fourteenth-century Scotland, face-to-face with Aidan MacDonald, the irresistible Highlander who has visited her in dreams. As their romance transcends to reality, it will take all of their courage and will for their love to survive beyond time itself...

My Thoughts:
I read a paperback of this book some time back and enjoyed re-reading it. I love Sue-Ellen Welfonder books. This one gets 4 of 5 stars.

I had previously read the Amy Jerecki title and reviewed it two years ago. It had been retitled in this collection but I recognized it at once since I loved the Time Travel.
The rest of the collection was difficult to read due to the bad formatting. Since I am a fan of most of these authors I struggled through the remainder of this anthology. I liked what I read as a rule. This opinion has little to do with the stories themself but just the reading problems. I found little writing errors just that I found it hard to find the end or the beginning of each story.

I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
