Dream Maker
by Kristen Ashley

I enjoyed reading my first Kristen Ashley book, the DREAM MAKER contemporary romance book and a spin off story. This looks to be the start of a series, DREAM TEAM Book 1 - and look forward to reading more of KA works in the future. I can see why Ashley has such a great following. Her books are great read and completely swoon over her characters and it is quite unputdownable too. This was funny, romantic and a fun read.

Unfortunately, not having read the Rock Chick stories, I felt a bit disconnected from this book. Evan “Evie” works multiple jobs to provide for her selfish family's constant needs, even though she is trying to save for school. One of her friends sets her up on a blind date with Daniel “Mag”, and although they are as different as night and day, their chemistry is off the charts Mag is an alpha "commando", a term which he doesn't like, who goes on classified missions with his team. When he realizes how much trouble Evie is in, trying to help her incarcerated brother, he steps in to help. Whether she wants it or not. Enjoyable romance.

Special thanks to Read Forever for providing our copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.

Unfortunately, this one didn't work for me. Initially, I chalked it up to timing on my part, but I just couldn't get invested in the story & this is a DNF for me.

Thank you for the opportunity to be an early reader.

Dream Maker by Kristen Ashley is a book that I’ve been looking forward to since the release announcement! First of all, I love Kristen Ashley books. She was the author who first introduced me to adult romance with The Gamble, and she’s one that I’ve stuck by and reread (all-too-often) ever since. Her books are so fun, swoony, usually have a heavy dose of romantic suspense, and they feel like a warm hug 💕

Dream Maker is the first book in the new Dream Team series, a spin-off of the original Rock Chick series, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, here. The Rock Chick series is a romantic suspense series that’s full of shenanigans as if follows the members of a badass private investigation team (nicknamed the “Hot Bunch”) in Denver, and their romances as their soon-to-be women (inevitably) get entangled in dangerous situations. It’s a fun series, that’s as hilarious as it is action-packed and full of friendship, family, sass, and shopping bags. Dream Maker followed this legacy with ease.

This one follows Evan “Evie” Gardiner, a computer and math genius who has spent her whole life weighed down by her criminal, idiotic, and abusive family as she pulls them out of scrape after scrape, loans them money when they need it, and as a result works two jobs (one of them stripping) as she’s still putting herself through school to get her degree at 27. She’s matched on a blind date by fellow dancer Lottie (from prequel novella story Quiet Man) to Daniel “Mag” Magnusson, one of the commandos who works for Hawk Delgado (from Mystery Man). It’s on this blind date that Evie (and subsequently, Mag) find out that Evie’s brother put her in a dangerous situation, and thus starteth the cycle 🥰

Kristen Ashley has a style, and she has a type. And while it varies series-to-series, her books are easily identifiable by their contents, even if you don’t see her name on the cover. Evie and Danny (Mag) will not come as a surprise to KA-lovers, but they are refreshingly unique in their own ways :)

Evie was a fun heroine – nerdy, quirky, klutzy, hilarious, and she has a big heart. The hero was still definitely all alpha-hot-man-commando, and one who is still having trouble from his time overseas, but Mag was also a bit of frat boy, which was very fun to see :) They were excellent together, just like the banter was excellent 🥰 This book, true to KA form, is an adventure, and watching Evie and Danny fall in love amid it all was just icing on the cake, honestly.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a new KA book (I’m still waiting for the last two Chaos books to be released in mass markets!) and this one reminded me how much I love KA’s writing, and all the themes she presents. KA always writes with a large cast of characters, which would probably be overwhelming for new readers (read Rock Chick series, then read the Dream Man series, then read the Chaos series, and then start this one for full understanding), but really this cast just felt like a giant family. I missed the KA Sisterhood and the Alpha Males 🥰 No one can write those like Kristen Ashley!

A page turning story with all of the goodness, excitement, hotness, and the feels, that one can expect from a Kristen Ashley book. I don't have the words to describe how much I enjoyed reading this story. Evie and Mag were awesome. I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

A spin-off of Ashley's awesome Rock Chick series, this title won't disappoint Rock Chick fans.

What I loved:
-that Evie is super smart and nerdy, yet also sexy (why are these traits so often portrayed as opposites?)
-the complicated nature of Evie's relationships with her family members
-the complicated relationship Evie has with dancing
-Mag's appreciation for Evie's complicated-ness (lazy he is NOT!)

I wasn't a huge fan of how clueless Evie was at times, but overall, another huge winner by one of my favorite authors.

Dream Maker (Dream Team 1) by Kristen Ashley
1st in a new series that connects to many others (see below). Contemporary Romance.

Let me start by saying that Kristen Ashley is my hands-down favorite author. There are books I like more than others of course, but her original alpha books still stand as my favorites. That’s great, because Dream Maker seems to be written for fans like me. Dream Maker is 100% a Rock Chick Series/Dream Man Series match-up with a new generation.

PHOTO: Dream Maker by Kristen Ashley Bookstagram

The story in Dream Maker is actually set up in Quiet Man , Lottie and Mo’s book. Though this is a new series, and you technically don’t need to read anything before it, there is SO MUCH crossover from the other two series, I can’t imagine that a new reader wouldn’t feel just a little lost or overwhelmed. But for a fan, Dream Maker was like coming home. I deliberately had to stop reading because I didn’t want it to end.

“Did anyone read those Rock Chick books?” Hattie asked. “Those women got kidnapped all the time. Maybe they’re like an…I don’t know. A how-to. As in, how-to-behave-when-kidnapped type a thing. Or how-to-know-whether-you-should-attempt-to-escape-or-not.”

The Rock Chick and Dream Man books (as well as many of her others) have a certain formula. That formula works spectacularly for me, and Dream Maker got back to the original formula with a sassy heroine you can’t help but love, an amazing girl posse, and over-the-top protective alpha, insta-lust, the alpha protecting and claiming the heroine before she knows what hit her, and some action right up till the end.

Lottie is a stripper at Smithie’s who found love with a commando named Mo (Quiet Man). Now she is out to set up all of her stripper friends with Mo’s fellow commandos. Mag (Danny) and Evie (aka Evan) are the first up.

Evie is a genius that has a shit family that drags her into their messes. So much so that she needs to strip because she spends so much money getting her brother and dad out of trouble. Alpha-grunty commando Mag reads her texts on the first date (in real life this is a no-go, but hey, that’s what KA alphas do), and he also saw her clumsy but cute personality. At 5% into Dream Maker, he was already all-in.

“I’m not your baby,” I breathed. His gaze shifted back to my eyes, and he rumbled, all sexy, hot and sweet, “Oh yeah, you are.”

Right from the beginning, Mag’s protective instincts kick in and all of Hawk’s Dream Team commandos are there to help. And with Lottie also came the Rock Chicks, and we got to hang with all of them.

“She thinks I’m a new Rock Chick,” I told him.
“She’s wrong,” Lottie decreed, snatching the bags out of Mag’s hands. “You’re a Dream Maker.”

And when the trouble really starts to brew, we get Tex! I love Tex!

“Well, all right!” Tex boomed. “We’d hit such a long, boring patch, I thought I’d have to eBay my grenades. Trust my Lottie girl to stir things up.”

Danny (Mag) was a great hero. Sure he is overbearing, but he is not too “he-man”, in fact he insists on cooking breakfast every day. And he takes care of Evie in so many ways. When she realizes what it’s like to be taken care of for the first time its both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I cried.

ART: Quote from Dream Maker by Kristen Ashley

As I write my likes and dislikes, I realize that despite a few little annoyances there is a feeling I get when I read Kristen Ashley that no other author gives me. That feeling alone is worth 5 stars to me. It’s like coming home.

"All my life, you know?”
“All your life what, baby?”
“Until you.”
He curved both arms around me and his voice was growly when he asked, “Until me, what?”
“The people I loved made loving them hard. Until you.”

Likes:
•I immediately got the KA feel.
•Danny was a great alpha-hole at the beginning, but he turned into just a great alpha.
•Though it was formulaic, it’s my favorite formula!
•The set-up for the rest of the books in the series.
•I laughed, I cried, I sighed and I swooned.
•Despite there being SO MANY side characters, it never took away from the main couple.
•Seeing all the Rock Chick and Dream Man and Chaos characters.
•The greatest girl posses.
•Set in Denver with many scenes in Fortnums.
•1st person female, 3rd person male.

Dislikes (more like nitpicks):
•There were so many characters, even a Kristen Ashley fan may have trouble keeping it straight. I’m not sure how a new reader would do.
•OK, so Evie is a millennial - she kind of banged us over the head with it at first.
•It may have been just a little too much of a campy homage to the originals. I’ve said it previously, but the Rock Chicks having the books about them as part of the story made them just a little too campy, and that continued here.
•I wish we delved a little more into Mag's background.

The Down & Dirty:
Dream Maker brought back everything I love about Kristen Ashley. If you are one of those people who wishes they could experience the Rock Chick or Dream Man series for the first time again, Dream Maker brings it. I read the whole thing with a happy, satisfied smile on my face, teared up at the end, and literally hugged my kindle when it ended. Now I want to go back and read all the old stuff again.

While Dream Maker FELT like a 5 star read to me, it wasn’t perfect, and it kind of felt like a campy reunion show, so I’m going to go with 4.5 Stars (rounded up for other platforms).
Rating: 4.5 Stars, 3.5 Heat

This Rock Chick spin-off is a dream come true. Gahhh, It's good to be back with this gang. I was fangirling over each special appearance.
There's a reason why I always refer to Kristen Ashley as The OG. I get so immersed in her stories. It's easy to feel like you're part of the group. With Dream Maker, you get it all, action, humor, steamy romance, and camaraderie. Yeah, I'll be preordering the rest of this series.

3.75 stars--DREAM MAKER is the first instalment in Kristen Ashley’s contemporary, adult DREAM TEAM erotic, romance series. This is twenty-seven year old, exotic dancer/IT specialist Evan ‘Evie’ Gardiner, and thirty four year old, fixer Daniel "Mag" Magnusson’s story line. DREAM MAKER and the Dream Team series is a spin-off from the author’s Rock Chick, Chaos and Dream Man series.

Told from first person perspective (Evie) and third person (Daniel) DREAM MAKER follows in the aftermath of a blind date between Evie and Daniel that went all to h*ll. Evie’s brother Mick is in jail, once again, and has called in another favor from our story line heroine but said favor was about to put Evie in the direct line of fire forcing Daniel to claim Evie as his own, pulling her into a lifestyle she knew nothing about. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Evie and Daniel, and the potential fall-out as Mick’s involvement with the seedier side of the Denver underbelly places Evie and Daniel at risk, along with Evie’s friends and fellow dancers at Smithie’s club.

Evie Gardiner’s family is the poster family for troubled and dysfunctional, and the deeper Evie is pulled into Mick’s life, the more at risk our heroine becomes but Mick isn’t the only family member placing Evie at risk as the apples don’t fall far from the proverbial trees. Working two jobs in an effort help pay for future college tuition, Evie struggles with her family and their negative impact on all of her relationships.

Daniel ‘Mag’ Magnusson is a retired US army soldier, and struggles with PTSD, and issues of rage and anger having witnessed atrocities no one should ever have seen. Meeting Evie Gardiner gives Daniel hope for the future but Evie’s inability to say no to her family places everyone at risk including our story line hero.

The relationship between Evie and Daniel begins acrimoniously as Evie believes she isn’t worthy of love or affection. Their first date quickly spirals out of control, and soon thereafter, Daniel calls in his friends and co-workers, including members of the Chaos MC, and the Rock Chicks, for help and support. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and erotic but I struggle with the use of a certain four-letter word in my romance story lines.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and familiar, secondary and supporting characters including Hawk, Auggie, Chaos MC member Kane ‘Tack ‘Allen; Mo, Elvira, Tex, Duke, Lottie, Axl, Boone, the Rock Chicks and their significant others; as well as Evie’s mother and father, and her step dad Rob; brother Mick; the ‘Dream Team’ dancers Ryn, Pepper, Ava; Lottie, and their boss Smithie; and Cicso aka Brett. The Rock Chicks reputation and life stories precedes their introduction to Evie’s fellow dancer,s and in this, Smithie’s girls want to be recognized for themselves, thusly calling the group the Dream Team. Ryn’s story is next in Dream Chaser.

DREAM MAKER is a story of family, friendship, betrayal and revenge. A story of a dysfunctional family unit who believe our heroine is expendable, using Evan Gardiner as their personal emotional punching bag. The premise is captivating and enjoyable; the characters are energetic and charismatic; the romance is seductive and intense-prepare for a case of insta-lust for Daniel ‘Mag’ Magnusson, and the use of baby and honey at every opportunity; and for fans of Kristen Ashley, a familiar formula as the heroine is kidnapped on more than one occasion.

Wow, it has been so long since I have read a Kristen Ashely book I forgot so many of the side characters involved in this one. I loved the Dream Men series and unfortunately I only got through the first couple Rock Chick books before life happened but man, now I really want to go back and jump into those books again because so many of them make cameo’s in Dream Maker.

In typical Kristen Ashely fashion there were a whole lot of alpha commando’s in here and there were moments of picturing a caveman with the way they talked. Mag/ Danny was actually one of the more milder alpha’s in a Kristen Ashley book, he was definitely take charge and wanted to take care of Evie but he was not as heavy handed as I remember some of the other hero’s being. I loved Evie, she was a dorky klutz who was a tech genius but had to strip to pay the bills and bail her family out of constant trouble. I wish I would have seen more of her techy genius side… especially if she used it get herself out of a couple jams but other than that I loved her independence and struggle to cut her family loose. All in all it was an enjoyable book, not super addictive in a I can’t put it down sort of way but I wasn’t bored at all.

Not my first read by the author and I have read every single of her books. She happens to be one of my top 5 favorite authors and I was so excited for this NEW beginning to a series!! So little explanation, I must be the only person alive that can not seem to vibe with the ROCK CHICKS series by KA. I have tried for years and it just is not my cup of tea, the heroine’s styles. That said this was a 50/50 for me because it does bring in the Rock Chicks ladies.

It was a bit heavy on trying to pay attention to who is who, also the reason because I have not read the rock chicks series so I had to kind of piece things together at to who is who and what. Luckily it does go into detail and explain but again with me not vibing with that series, it was harder for me to get into this new series book.

I absolutely LOVED EVIE the heroine OMG i fell in love with her right away, she is a little bit of nerd and a lot of klutz in the cutest way! She is always there for everyone and has the sweetest smile and biggest heart, even if she is doing something like dancing at Smithie’s for money, because let’s just say that, her bank account just can’t seem to cover living expenses. So what’s a girl to do, she’s gotta do what she’s gotta do and take care of herself. MAG is a sexy, handsome, sweetheart who has a lot on his plate but gets a lot more when he meets Evie. Something about her just drives him to her, and I gotta say these two have a lot of fun and really are a true TRUE couple! Lot’s of previous characters, lot’s of new characters, lot’s of sexy hot men aside from the hero and more use of the word ‘babe’ which coming from a badass is really sexy! All that said, Evie kind of helped make me fall in love with the whole story and book and I will say that I will read more in the series aside from all. It’s a new beginning I’m ready to ride out with the author!

Are you an experienced Kristen Ashley fan? Awesome!
Are you NEW to Kristen Ashley? Excellent starting point!

This book is perfect for old and new fans alike. This author has a very specific style, and this is no exception. Strong males, quirky females, super dramatic situations, sweet romance, and spicy love scenes.

Evan is experiencing another episode in the life of her family, which is never a good thing. She is driven and stubborn, she never gives up on who or what she believes in. Mag is the uber-alpha male, he's a commando with a heart of gold and a temper to match.

I really enjoyed the ties to the Rock Chicks and how they all flowed into the Dream Team. The situation that Evan finds herself in was interesting, Mag was perfect throughout the story, and they had some serious chemistry together. I felt like this was Kristen Ashley getting back to her original style of writing, and I truly enjoyed it!

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This may be the first book in a new series, but it is deeply immersed in the Kristen Ashley world of Rock Chicks. In fact, it is a fun reunion with everyone you ever met before – I love that I know them all so well, but even if you are new to this world, then Ashley makes sure that she gives plenty of background too.

Lottie is on a mission to set up all her friends at Smithie’s with single men she knows... after all, if she can find love, so can they! Evan “Evie” is her first vict... I mean subject, and by the end, one would have to agree that Lottie does well. Danny “Mag” certainly gets to show off his skills as Evie gets involved in something far bigger than she ever expected when helping out her no-good brother.

I enjoyed the camaraderie, the plot twists, and most of all, the crazy romance. It was the very best form of escapism; thank you, Kristen Ashley, once again for stopping the outside world and letting me join yours!

Avid Reader – ☆☆☆☆
M/F Romance
Triggers: Drugs

Evie is working her tail off to provide a better future for herself. She grew up knowing that she was the only person that she could count on. With a less than stellar family life, Evie has had to scrimp, save, claw, and scratch her way through life. Her good friend, Lottie, is trying to set all of her girlfriends up with decent, loving men. Evie is first up.

Mag has been closed off for a while. He knows that he has come home with scars, but when his good friend, Lottie, sets him up on a blind date, he also knows that Lottie will harp on him until he goes. What Mag isn’t expecting is the fun, flirty, slightly nerdy woman who meets him for their date.

With everything going on, Evie isn’t sure about having Mag help her, but he isn’t taking no for an answer. This story has a lot going on, but nothing overshadows the other. I loved watching Evie and Mag figure out their relationship and seeing Evie learn to let her family deal with their own issues. I can’t wait for the next book.

Love love love these commandos! Being back in Denver, with the Rock Chicks AND Commandos was nothing short of a brilliant idea by KA! As always we get the laughs, sexiness, action and emotion to round out this first installment of the new Dream Team series!

If you are a fan of Kristen Ashley's Rock Chick and Dream series then this book will make you the happiest human. It is swoony, fun and filled with suspense that kept me glued to every single word. I loved seeing characters from her previous novels come onto the scene while getting aquainted with a new couple that I am now in love with. Kristen's brand of alpha males and their sassy female counterparts are the book candy I always look forward to.

I was so excited to learn Kristen Ashley has a new book out and I was even more excited to learn it is a Rock Chick spin off. I am a huge fan of everything KA writes, so I was happy to read and review this book. This engaging story is full of hot alpha males and spunky females, who manage to get into trouble and sometimes need rescuing.

I love Danny (Mag) and Evie’s story. They meet on a blind date and neither of their lives are the same after that meeting. This story is full of entertaining characters, bad guys, protective alpha males and women with lots of attitude.

Evie is a stripper with a heart of gold and she is also a genius. Unfortunately, her family’s demands keep her so busy, she is having a difficult time finishing her degree. Evie is always helping everyone else and she doesn’t make time for herself.

Mag works for Hawke; they are investigators commando style. If you read Mystery Man, you know who Hawke is and if you haven’t read Mystery Man, I’d encourage you to do so. It is one of my favorit KA books. Mag is a good guy, but he has some issues from his past and he is trying to avoid having to deal with them. Mag is a protective alpha male and from the minute he meets Evie, he is in full protection mode and of course, Evie tries to fight him.

All of the entertaining characters and their crazy antics make this a captivating story. The story and dialogue are fun and engaging and I enjoyed the bantering back and forth between all the characters. The Rock Chicks get into the mix and many other characters from past books make appearances, which add to all the rollicking fun. This is a wonderful start to the new Kristen Ashley Dream Maker series.

I really enjoyed this book but I got lost with all the characters from previous series and there were a lot of them. Fans of the other books, will love seeing their favorites return but for someone who hadn't read any other Ashley books it was a bit overwhelming.

I loved Evie. She's been taken advantage of and emotionally abused by everyone in her family and yet she's the kindest person ever. She's aslo wicked smart and nerdy which I adored her for. She's got a lot to deal with beyond the most obvious threats to her life.

Mag is also a great character. He's got issues with his anger and PTSD but he's very aware of them and quick to try to shield Evie from his worst side. He's so good to her. So supportive. So able and willing to take down the threats to her.

The story had plenty of suspense and rich characters. I'd definitely raise my hand for the next story.

Thank you fantastic Forever Team for the privilege of granting me this ARC.

I do however feel I failed you. I have to face the facts: I'm growing out of love with Kristen Ashley's writing style and stories.

As much as I would love to say I loved it, I did not. It's not bad, mind you, but it's just so repetitive. Same kidnapping the heroine, same comando guy with personality or anger issues, same strugging female lead who has assholish family. It was dejavù actually, reading this story. I know she's written so many like it.

That said I think the ONLY saving grace this book had, was Susannah Jones narrating the audiobook. She did the entire Rock Chick series, and I loved every minute of those, so I decided to give it a try since I know her narrating style and she did not dissapoint. What bummed me more was the actual story. Too much of the same, just a different title.

This doesnt mean I wont read the rest of the series. I have a newfound curiosity for Evan's co workers and their commando's, I just cross my fingers these are more attention grabbing.

Dream Maker is the start of a new series but characters from the author's previous series, Dream Man and Rock Chick (some Chaos) heavily feature in it. I've read books in Dream Man but none in Rock Chick, I was able to hang in there in regards to who was who and connections but barely. If you're completely new to Kristen Ashley, this probably isn't where you should start.

One could say I was correct in my concerns about Daniel Magnusson. I didn’t know if he was toxic. But he was a bossy damned alpha. And meddling.

If you're not new to Ashley, you'll recognize her writing style but with some tweaking. Danny speaks in full sentences but “Babe” and a controlling nature that make Ashley heroes a love them or hate them, was still evident in the character. Evie was the klutzy nerd that makes her adorable to the hero and because of how forced and jammed in it felt at times, she super duper cares about the environment (she drives a Prius and wears shoes from recycled bottles!) in what I think was probably added to make her seem more Millennial/Gen Z. Evie broaches pushing back at Danny's controlling nature, he's a “commando” so he wants to run the show in regards to protecting her, but Danny ends up pretty much doing what he wants. There's insta attraction between the two and I think all the “babes” and whispered talk was supposed to be the evidence for these deep feelings. I can't say these two left a lasting impression on me.

“Mac is no fool. This isn’t about you sorting my shit. It’s her setting me up to sort yours.”

Lottie, Evie's friend, set-up Danny with Evie and told Evie Danny was sleeping his way through Denver because he was having a hard time emotionally. However, Danny sees how crappy Evie's family treats her and then reads a text message that shows how much danger Evie is being put in because of her brother and he thinks Lottie put them together to help Evie. The plot involving Evie's brother, drugs, and danger was supposed to be the continuing thread throughout the book but it never gets filled out enough and gets ignored for the majority of the time in favor of Evie and Danny whispering at each other in short sentences that “Ooh that must have meant something, they really care about me!”. The suspense plot felt ignored, was slow, and never filled out to create any semblance to a plot.

“I’m a little scared, Danny,” I admitted.
“I am too,” he surprised me by saying. “But you’re worth the risk.”

The whole series gets laid out, Evie was set-up with Danny through Lottie and we learn that three other women that Evie works with at the strip club and she realizes are her friends, are lined up and paired off with Danny's friends and co-workers. There isn't any surprise or suspense in who the couples will be in the coming books. There was a couple that interested me but the utter lack of plot in this has me very tentative to try another in this series.

These people. These crazy, kindhearted people.

Evie felt like a fully formed character but Danny's background was absent and it left his character a bit vapid. Evie gets kidnapped twice and their first sex scene is after Danny was shot and was previously in a lot of pain. There's enough of Ashley's tried and true elements that previous readers could find enjoyment and enough tweaking that it could bring in new readers, for me, I really just needed more plot.

Evan was fun, and quirky.  I liked that she didn't have it all together, that she was able to laugh at herself, and that she was so level headed.  Kristen Ashley has a way of writing characters you can't help but love, and she nailed it with Evan.  Evan's other half, Danny was just as fun.  These two seemed to be on the same wave length, and found things about each other charming when others would be put off by it (ie, Evan's dorkiness).

Like every other KA book we had a wealth of amazing side characters that added depth, feeling, and craziness to this story.  There were multiple side stories  that will peak your interest, and leave you itching to know how these stories will play out.

I enjoyed this book, it was a fun quick read.  I just didn't love it like I did/do other KA books.  It just wasn't at the same level as her past work.

What can I say? I've read everything Kristen Ashley has written and fall in love with Denver and Fortnum's every time I open the pages. If only I could get a Textual this afternoon! As usual, her characters are well-rounded, yet openly flawed, which makes them real! That is one reason I love these titles so much. They are perfectly imperfect and that gives me hope!
