I have since purchased a copy, but this excerpt sealed the deal for me as far as borrowing from the library or owning a copy.

Sarah J. Maas writing is amazing in this new book of hers. With this small excerpt, I already want the book and will buy it. Her character and world building is quite amazing and addicting. I’m already in love with this new series.

Thank you for the excerpt of House Of Earth And Blood. I will defiantly be buying this book. I have been looking for a fantasy book to dig into as I don't read very many of them. I can't want to see what the rest of the book brings.

What I Loved: Part murder mystery, part epic fantasy this doorstop of a book has so much going for it. In a world full of shapeshifters, angels and fae everything is great for Bryce, until her best friend is murdered and she becomes the prime suspect. I made it about a fourth of the way into this book and liked what I read but I had to set it down because it’s such a long book and I didn’t feel as invested as I should have. I tried it on audio but think I will give it ago in physical form since my library hold has basically been extended until May so I have time right?

What I Didn’t Love: the thing I disliked most about this book are twofold. First, why does SJM call everyone male and female. It annoys me to know end! I cringe everytime I read it but I’m hoping that the story will make my pain worth it. The other hang up I had about the first 15 chapters or so was how long things took to happen? Am I going to walk away from this one feeling like it could have been 300 page shorter? Probably, but I still plan on giving the rest of the book a try next month.

From the publisher:
Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night-until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She'll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose-to assassinate his boss's enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he's offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City's underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion-one that could set them both free, if they'd only let it.

This was just a taste of what was to come and I am incredibly excited! I was a little concerned that this book would resemble her Court of Thorns and Roses, but it doesn't. There is a wonderful bad-ass main character and a steamy romance, but the plot is far different. I can't wait to read the rest!

I’ve read every single one of Maas’s books. ACOMAF being my absolute favorite. Maas knocked HOEAB out of the park. The plot was great, the mystery was great, the romance was amazing. I loved the relationships between Bryce and everyone she knew. This is a book that shouldn’t be missed! IT WAS SO GOOD!!

An absolute wonder! I'm so beyond excited to read the full book (it's been preordered!) and know Sarah J. Maas as an adult writer. New worlds with new loves and new hearts to fall into.

I've said it once and I'll say it again; I would read this woman's grocery lists and discarded receipts.
Admittedly, Crescent City hasn't hooked me yet, mainly I think because urban fantasy is not my thing. I have no doubt the romance will seal the deal once I sort out all the characters and better build the world in my head!

Wow. I mean wow. She's done it again. I'm in love with another series. I knew I would enjoy this but I wasn't expecting how much. I wasn't expecting it to pull me in as quickly as it did & make me love these characters so much. It's that wonderful fantasy creatures & magic you love but in a fun modern setting. Those last couple hundred pages absolutely kept me on the edge of my seat not knowing what to feel & with every page it never slowed down once. There's so much emotion in this book. I felt so much through out this story & I won't stop thinking about this book until the sequel comes out.

Loved it and Cant wait to read the full book,
It does have a slow start but you can tell that, that could be because if the big new world .
I already like Bryce, and cant wait ti see more of her, but to be honest while I liked her she was a bit annoying at first. but my guess is there is so much mire to hr than we see in the first few chapters.
Overall liking what I saee and looking forward to reading more

House of Earth and Blood is literary magic. It pulled me in as if it casted its enchanting spell on my senses and I, willing to be tamed, allowed Maas's writing to encompass me with every word like the sing song lyrics of your favorite poet's piece, dancing within your heart. I was taken by this world and find myself yearning to stay!!

Really enjoyed this preview! So unlike anything SJM has written before. Has made me very excited to read the full novel. The plot is fascinating so far and I really enjoy Bryce and Hunt's characters. The worldbuilding is a bit confusing and feels info-dumping, which I expected better because this is SJM's 12th (?) novel. But hopefully the full novel is better. However, even now -- having not read the whole book -- I can tell this is going to be unnecessarily long. Hoping to be proven wrong.

3.5 stars for preview.

Another reviewer said the first chapters start off with huge info-dumps rather than show, don't tell, and that's true. Too much world building, way too early made for confusion. Still, the main character was likable and interesting, and she was surrounded by great secondary characters like Fury. The sole reason I'm off to go look up the price of the full length book, though, is that last scene where the angel was attacked - what a hook!

This review can only be based on the except provide, but of what I read I am keen to read more. Good characters, an engaging story and what looks to be the start of an amazing series and one to look out for.

Honestly the first few chapters weren’t anything to write home about. However that last chapter made it all worth it. I want more!!

This book, y'all. I've loved Sarah J. Maas since I first read Throne of Glass but this is so far away from that first book! First, I absolutely LOVE how adult it is. There's a lot of cursing -- so beware if you aren't a big fan of f-words. It's more suggestive, playful and serious. She really let her writing loose with this one, and it really worked in her favor.

I saw in another review that someone called this a good friendship story over a good love story, and that is the truest statement to ever be heard. Bryce and Hunt flirt and have an obvious attraction, and that's amazing. But over insta-love, their story focuses on healing together, understanding each other, and really knowing what it means to have a friend that's there for you through everything. It's beautiful. I just shed a tear thinking about it.

The one thing I wish was a little better in House of Earth and Blood is the world building. Which is crazy to say because Maas is so good at it. But the first half of the book, I couldn't really get a solid lay of the land, especially when it came to the distant war they mentioned and all of these cities and territories outside of Crescent City. There was a lot of info dumping in the first few chapters, which made it even more difficult to sort through this world and what was going on. It cleared up more as I read it, but it could have been avoided -- even with just another map. There wasn't a full world map outside of the Crescent City one when there definitely should have been.

Despite any flaws this book may have, I read it in 4 days. Which is pretty fast for me, but I know there's some speed readers who probably read it in 24 hours. I've always thought Maas' books were compulsively readable, but this one takes the trophy. I couldn't put it down. I loved the friendships, the journey, and OH MY GOD THE ENDING. This ending probably takes the trophy too.

You honestly need to prepare yourself for those last 200 pages. I am still a mess. Even though we've only known these characters for one book, I cried through the entire last section. That's how attached I got to all of the people in this story. I already miss them and can't wait to read the next book (for which there is some great foreshadowing).

Absolutely loved. This world is such a different design than any of came across. It just keeps you needing more. Cannot wait for the full book. The writing is in typical Sarah j Mass style. Which I’m loving, as it just flows so easily. I had zero complaints except it was just not enough.
