This is the first Sarah J Maas book (excerpt) I have read and I realise now that I am seriously late to the party! I love the first 5 chapters I was lucky enough to read. I’m throughly into the story and cannot wait to find out who killed Bryce’s friends and what she plans to do about it.
I was slightly overwhelmed with details at the beginning and the sheer number of characters coming at me was a bit confusing but sometimes you have to have faith it will all fall into place.
I have pre ordered this book from Waterstones (gotta have the exclusive edition!)

This was an exciting excerpt from the novel and I can’t wait for its release! Thank you NetGalley for the excerpt!

I had the privilege of receiving an excerpt of this novel through Netgalley. Since House of Earth and Blood is set to be released on March 3rd and I just got a taste of the novel, I will not be providing ANY spoilers. This post is primarily to interest readers in this novel and incredible series!
UGH Sarah J. Maas why must you tease me so! When I got the notification that this was released to Netgalley, I requested the excerpt so fast, it’s nuts. I am a massive Sarah J. Maas fan, she is one of the only authors who I can read third-person perspective through.
It wasn’t available to readers what the writing style of House of Earth and Blood would be like until the book released. In the past, Maas has written in both first and third-person perspectives. Alas, this was written in third-person.
I want to start this review by saying how grateful I am to be able to get a sneak peek of the novel! I honestly loved it and now am craving more!
Let just start by the cover. It is GORGEOUS ugh, so beautifully done, I cannot wait to get my hands on the hard copy and fully analyze this cover. The amount of detail that went into it amazes me. I am just obsessed.
Now, this is a fantasy novel, but unlike the other works that she has published, this is her first adult novel. Just with reading the first 5 chapters, I can say that she fits well into it. Frankly, I was a bit worried we were going to have a Casual Vacancy incident, but thankfully it was avoided.
For those who are wondering what House of Earth and Blood is about, here is a blurb provided by the publisher:
Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.
Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.
As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it. With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.

How I wish to tell what the first chapters are about, but I feel like that is just taking away from the excitement that comes with this book!
In all honesty, the excerpt is written incredibly, I am rarely lost for words when reviewing a novel, but I literally cannot formulate words to express how much I am in LOVE with this novel.
Sarah, you have done it again. I know for sure that this novel will be on the NYT Bestsellers list!
If you are at all contemplating or are just intrigued by this novel pre-order it! By doing so and submitting your receipt, you will receive an exclusive art print! I have pre-ordered mine and am so excited about the novel and the art!

This is my most anticipated book of 2020. I love Sarah J Maas! She is my queen of fantasy! So of course I wanted to read whatever I could of this book the minute I could. So when the first 5 chapters was available I jumped at the chance to read it. I’m not saying I regret it but holy crap did stuff just go down and it’s going to hurt to have to wait another month for it to actually come out. Long story short I loved this a lot and I need the finished copy in my hands!!

It's no surprise that Sarah J. Maas is my absolute favorite author and I am ecstatic for the release of this book. I flew through this chapter sampler so quickly and was left dying for more. I love the introduction of a new modern world and I'm excited to see what Sarah does with it since we've had high-fantasy low-technology worlds in her previous books. Not only that, but the main character Bryce is so wonderful already. I am very intrigued by her and her story and what will happen next!
All I can say is that I have 6 copies preordered and will still be driving to the bookstore on release day to get a copy in my hands ASAP.

Getting access to this excerpt only makes me more excited for House of Earth and Blood. This adult urban fantasy follows Bryce a half-fae/half-time seeking to avenge those she's lost. This first few chapters seem to give a lot of information, but so far we know there are magical abilities and every sort of paranormal being you could want. I Pre-ordered this book this afternoon after reading this sneak peek.

After getting a taste of this.... I'm even more excited! I'm SJM trash so I'm sure to love this! So glad she's finally into the adult market!

I want more!! I know this was only the first five chapters but I'm hooked. I want to read more of this new series from Sarah J. Maas. I've read her previous two series and this is a whole new unique world with fascinating characters and I NEED to know what will happen next! The characters had me invested immediately so when the final chapter of the excerpt ended with a shake up of the characters I was aghast and am desperate to know what will happen next! Awesome start to what looks like a fascinating new series!

Well it's only 5 chapters but it was actually a lot to read. I know it's a long book but I was glad I got to read some of it because it is definitely one I will buy and read for sure. There were a lot of terms and a lot of characters so in the beginning I thought it would be difficult for me to follow but it was actually ok. I did get attached to some characters only to be disappointed when some of them don't seem to be making it to the end of the story but oh well! Definitely loved what I read and cannot wait to get my hands on this book and read it.

This rating is subjected to change once I’ve read the completed novel.
When I saw the excerpt of Crescent City available on NetGalley, you can bet I jumped at it! I loved Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series and I’m super excited to read her adult debut.
I don’t know how I feel about our protagonist Bryce yet, it’s still to early to say. I did like her independence and her strong sense of self-respect. And I absolutely adored her friendship with Danika. I find Maas does a really great job writing relationships.
That being said, I did find the beginning of the excerpt very info dumpy, to the point where I felt overwhelmed and was having a hard time keeping track of what I’m being told and what was currently happening in the scene. Which is understandable, to an extend, as this book is introducing a new world and I’m only five chapters in, still trying to get my bearings. Because of the information overload, the plot did feel really slow at first. However, it does pick up in the latter half of chapter 5. The ending definitely left me craving for more! I can’t wait to get my hands on this book!
Please Note: I was fortunate enough to receive an excerpt of the first 5 chapters from Bloomsbury via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my opinions in any way.

THIS EXCERPT WAS EVERYTHING I NEEDED IN LIFE
Literally
I feel like I made myself suffer now that I read this sneak peek because I WANT MORE
I'm in love, absolutely

Loved the excerpt and I cannot wait to continue reading the story. All of the elements are working for me so far from the unique worldbuilding, to the strong characters and sassy wit.

This is very exciting. In this excerpt, Maas has set up a vast fantasy world with so many facets to her and an intriguing plot. I can't wait to read this!

Wow! That was amazing and the cliffhanger epic. It was so action packed and fun. It took a long time for the plot to get going and all the exposition made my head spin, there was probably a way to do it more subtly but I'm sure you'd get used to it the more you read.
I enjoyed the mix of magic and technology in the story and the best part was hands down the relationship between Bryce and Danika!
The excerpt shows promise of a great novel.

This review is for the first five chapters teaser that the publisher has made available on Netgalley. Welcome to planet Midgard were apparently humans once were in charge but now they seem to be woefully outnumbered by supernatural beings . We meet Bryce who is half Fae but determined to live her life her way. Her best friend is the Alpha of the local Werewolf Pack but as this story begins it’s revealed that a bomb happy human has been released on a technicality from prison and everyone is worried that further terrorist atrocities are on their way !
This snippet if I’m being brutal would only get a three from me because one Bryce just didn’t strike a chord in anyway and two because most of this is setting the scene, giving the reader information and generally trying to world build . HOWEVER the last few pages most definitely got my full attention and as much as I didn’t like much about Bryce I am most definitely desperate to know who, what and why ! My lips are sealed but the story took a very unique turn considering how characters were introduced so I will rate this a four and say that I’m sincerely hoping the entire book will satisfy my bookish soul !

To whoever decided THAT is where to end the excerpt:
“Yeah, I have a lot of questions. Number one, how dare you?”
This really does have the feel of Sarah J. Maas heading into a fully adult style of storytelling. It has the classic feel that Maas has with words, but it’s more grown up and edgier than her previous works.
It takes seconds to start falling for the characters on the page. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Maas book if she didn’t completely rip your heart out and stomp on it, I just didn’t expect for it to happen so quickly.
This excerpt has definitely whet my appetite and pushed all of my worry of a new series aside. I can already tell this will become a book to be savoured.

I'm glad I was able to read an excerpt, although I guess it wasn't entirely necessary as I enjoyed reading all of her work. ACOTAR more than the TOG series.

So excited and thrilled to read an excerpt of SJM's newest book "House of Earth and Blood"! I love the cover, it's so pretty. The characters were very interesting, I DID like Bryce. If I had any complaint, it would be that it got a tad bit info-dumpy at times, so it was slightly difficult to keep track of what was happening at times.

* I was provided an arc by NetGalley in exchange for a review*
There are two types of people, those who love this author and will consume any and all words she writes, and those just don’t care for her at all. I definitely belong in the first group.
This book is such a smooth and easy read. I honestly had no idea I was at the end because I was completely engrossed in Bryce’s story. Which brings me to my only criticism; it’s too short! I want more now, because waiting is going to suck! It seems to be a very different world than we’ve read from Mass before, with Werewolves, Angels, Witches, and many others. I immediately connected with the main characters because their dialogue was so easy going and familiar, and it allowed you to fall into this friendship. This for me just added to my love for this author and this book. Then the story itself is really interesting, and I look forward to see where she goes with it. That ending though..!

Well played Sarah J. Maas, well played. I just go to read an excerpt of this book and well crap on a cracker I MUST have this book now! I have love all of Ms. Maas's previous books so I was excited about this one but after reading this heart wrenching beginning, just wow.
