I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I saw an email offering me an arc of this book! I was so excited you’d think I’d won the lottery!
That’s when I actually took the time to read the BIG CAPITAL LETTERS saying this was only an excerpt.
Oh well, I didn’t win the lottery but I still got to read 70 pages of pure bliss. (For me, not so much for the characters in the book. Some pretty bad stuff happens)
Honestly though, I was expecting greatness from Sarah J Maas and she didn’t disappoint. This was everything I could’ve hoped for. It was thrilling and exciting. The characters were strong and intriguing. And the world building, oh the word building. Maas is just too good.
I can’t wait to read the rest of the book! (And proceed to write a lengthy review about everything that’s amazing about it)

'House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1),' the first of a brand new adult series by Sarah J. Maas is only a little less than a month away and I can't wait..
Yesterday, I got a glimpse of the entirely new world she's created around main character, Bryce Quinlan through the first five chapters of the novel. I must say, as a freshman Maas reader, I did not know exactly what I was getting into.. but that's good!
I like to go in as blindly as possible when I start a read. Even though I obviously read the synopsis when I first take interest in a book, I like to let as much of that fall away as I can before picking it up. I like to give the author fresh eyes.
In this case, I also didn't have any sort of predetermined idea as to her style or the types of things she might throw at the reader. So, as I immediately grew attached to certain characters in the opening chapters, even though what happened was put out there right in the blurb, I was crushed when that pivotal moment came. And to think, that scene is such a small thing as to begin the journey..
Clearly, this is going to be a rough road to travel and I'm all in. If you can break my heart with a setup you've told me is coming.. I want to see what more you have to offer.
The Crescent City world is huge. All manner of magical and non-magical beings existing in one place.. seven quarters in the city.. an Imperial Council (we all know how well that went for the people of the Star Wars universe).. and what appears to be a couple of very nasty players in the game. Both above and below the divisional class lines.
March 3rd can't get here fast enough!

Holy Hel!!! The only thing that could have made this better was if it had been the whole book instead of an excerpt. I have been hearing so many wonderful things about the way Sarah J. Maas writes that I had to FINALLY check it out myself and.......I am officially a huge fan! I have like 6 of her books on my TBR list but now that I've read the first few chapters of this new series I just HAVE to get my hands on an actual hard copy come March 3rd. Bryce Quinlan is a strong female lead that has a pretty big task ahead of her trying to figure out who is responsible for killing her friends. I mean, what's not love about a series that has Fae, Witches, Sprites, Wolves, and Fallen Angels (and so many more)?

To be honest, this is one of my most anticipated releases of 2020 and reading the five first chapters got me even more excited!!
We mostly get to meet some key characters and some stuff about the world and the species. I think that these chapters take place before the main story and they end in a big and very important moment to Bryce's future!
I can't wait to read the whole book!

I am so happy to have gotten a chance to read this excerpt and it makes me more excited for the release date! There is a lot going on in this book and I expect the world building will be intricate and take some time to settle in my head. There are four houses in this world which cover a whole of creatures, fae, and everything else. But I'm excited to learn about them all and Bryce. So far so good and I'm excited to read the whole book!

I have been very excited for this book recently so when I saw the excerpt I had to read it ASAP! The beginning was a little bit of an info dump, but other than that, I really enjoyed this. I am so intrigued and it left me wanting more. Definitely looking forward to it’s publication.

I loved this teaser! Can't wait to read the entire work on March 3.
I don't know what to say for such a short section of work, but I can say that fans of Sarah J Maas' other series will love this one too, even though the writing does make it clearly pretty early on that this is an adult work.
I can't wait!

Its grabbed my attention and now I'm even more excited to read the entire story! The authors writing is just as compelling as ever.

For a very long time, I loved reading SJM's writing, but now that I've come back to it after stepping away for a while, I find that I don't enjoy it nearly as much anymore. The entire first chapter introduces readers to too many elements of the world. I don't want to call it an info-dump, but really that's what happened. I really wanted to like this book. The plot intrigues me to no end, but the writing just doesn't hold my attention anymore.

I’ve heard so many good things about this author so when this excerpt came up I was excited. I guess I need to go back and read the other books because I was super confused. There are so many characters and different creatures I got lost. It did get better at the end so maybe I need the whole book.

This excerpt left me starving for more of Sarah J Maas's words, stories, worlds. The release date of this book can't come soon enough! Even though the description of the book lets you know of the heartbreak to come, it almost makes it more agonizing to read how the events play out. The rich character development and the relationship buildup in just five chapters shows the majesty of Maas's craft. This is my most anticipated book of 2020, and I can't wait to devour the rest of this book!

My goodness, what a tease!! After reading these five chapters I cannot wait to have the whole book in my hands! Sarah J Maas does not disappoint and I am already hooked and extremely intrigued and excited to read on!

I was really excited to read this because I have been on the fence about pre-ordering this book or waiting to read some reviews first. I have loved all of the author's other books, but since this is an adult rather than a YA book I was unsure if I would like it. After reading this excerpt I am definitely more interested in the world she has created for this series and I am looking forward to reading the full book and getting to know the characters better! Looks I will be pre-ordering this one after all!

I've got to be honest here - I'm an extremely biased Sarah J. Mass fan. I bought this book when it came up for pre-order, and have loved everything she has ever written. That being said, this excerpt felt NEW. The tone is definitely more adult, and even though this is a short excerpt, I could tell this is something we have never gotten from Mass before.
This excerpt did a PHENOMENAL job of setting the story up. The map is beautiful, and the house separations were clear and helped us understand the division and politics of the city. I appreciate those being included.
I loved the way we were introduced to Bryce and especially the friendship between her and Danika. You could feel the camaraderie and love between these two. As well as the rest of the Pack of Devils.
Everything about this excerpt drew me into the story - and by the end, it made me so excited to get my hands on the full novel. No spoilers... but holy monkey. Color me impressed. Mass is such a talented and imaginative writer.

Like basically everyone else here, I am beyond excited for this book. I love everything Sarah J. Maas writes, so this will be no exception. There was a lot to unpack in the first 5 chapters, and I am glad to have had the opportunity to read them first. I cannot wait to see where this story goes, and to experience Sarah's first adult novel!
I was given an advanced reader's copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own

I am not sure how to convey the level of excitement I am feeling about this book. Insert girlish shriek here. I am completely hooked and cannot wait for the full book.

An exciting look at the first five chapters of this gripping new series by Sarah J. Maas. Bryce Quinlan half-human half-Fae works hard and parties harder, enjoying all the temptations that Crescent City has to offer. After a night filled with dancing, drugs, and alcohol, Bryce returns home to find her friends slaughtered by a mysterious creature. Bryce chases the creature down but he evades her capture leaving her wounded and waiting for help.
I was so excited to see a new series by one of my favorite authors. The House of Earth and Blood offers a diverse cast of fantasy creatures each originating from a different house of Midgard. I can't wait for this first novel to release so I pick up where the story leaves off and discover what happens with Bryce.

This may be only a small excerpt of a very large book, but it's already quite clear to me that it is going to be an intriguing and complex story, with interesting character and race dynamics. However, I'm not too sure about the writing style.
In any case, this is one of my most anticipated releases of 2020 and I'll be sure to buy a copy as soon as it's released!

Seems like an interesting world but there’s almost an information overload and I couldn’t keep track of all the different kinds of creatures and their houses. Took me a while to get into it and I didn’t feel the main character was very compelling, but that ending of the excerpt does setup for a very explosive mystery.
I know I’m gonna read it anyways because I love SJM but I wish the overuse of the words “male” would have stopped. Alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case and I’ll be well prepared to be annoyed.

I think I'm going to listen to the audiobook for this series (the narrator isn't even announced yet with less than 1 month to go! Its just that theres a ton of information overload in the beginning. Its interesting though and I'm curious for this book.
