I love this manga series. So much. It just makes me completely giddy. The characters are unforgettable and truly I think that Yuji is one of the best protagonists out there. Beyond that, the world is very interesting as is the power system. I can't wait to see where this story goes as they continue to collect Sukuna's fingers... whew. It's going to be a wild ride. I highly recommend this series.

Incredible start to a fantastic series. Body horror interwoven with folk horror and school themed heroics.

When this came out, readers were calling it the new Bleach or Naruto. It's a very different story, but it does have a similar feel and some of the characteristics that made those stories so appealing and garnered the followings they did. I don't think it's quite at the same level, and I didn't fall as love with it as those stories, but I still enjoyed reading this and went looking for volume 2 when I finished it so I could see what happened next. I don't think it's necessarily the next big thing, but I don't think you'll mourn time wasted if you read it either. It's got action, a little bit of darkness, and all the things that can make a series interesting as long as the ball isn't dropped. Too soon to really weigh judgement on this one, but I would recommend it thus far.

I really enjoyed this manga! The fight scenes were drawn so well! Sometimes with fight scenes it just looks like a bunch of blurs and you can't really tell what's going on but not his manga! The story was great too! I can't wait to dive into more of the manga and explore the world that it's set in. Overall, a great manga and one I'm excited to read more.

Very interesting so far. I’m hooked and can’t wait to pick up the next volume. I’ve also started the anime and am absolutely in love with it.

I wish I hadn't read Vol. 0 first. The story does not continue from that point so its was a bit disorienting when characters you get to know are not in the story. They eventually come back but still the transition is annoying. That aside this is still an intriguing story with good action and well devised character development. The world building and jujustu lore is also very captivating. I need to hurry up and read these because I have a feeling I will enjoy the anime even more than the manga.

An action-packed series with all the fixings of a well-thought-out arc.

Yuji Itadori was like any other highschooler joining a club on campus until a night of afterschool activities go wrong and Itadori ends up eating a cursed object. His actions drag him into the unseen world of curses and to the school of Jujutsu Sorcerers.

This is a great first volume packed with action and detailed plot development. Yuji Itadori is a likable lead with a bit of mystery to his backstory. His interaction with other characters is meaningful and revealing of deeper plots. Satoru Gojo adds humor and mystery to the story with a lot of foreshadowing. Similarly, Megumi Fushiguro's character adds humor and a feminism perspective to the story. The illustrations are haunting, bordering Junji Ito given the detail to unappealing aspects. The shading also adds a haunting aspect that captures the thrill and intensity of the dialogue.

This is an excellent read for action, thriller, and paranormal readers! I look forward to reading the other volumes in the series.

The art is a little weird (as is a bunch of shounen manga) but it’s very good.

The story is about this kid that eats a cursed item and then is tasked with eating a bunch more so that he can live longer.

The main character Yuji is one of my fave types of manga characters to read about. Super kind and does things for other people but always running into danger.

I can’t wait to read the whole series.

Yugi Itadori gets more than he bargained for after he swallows a powerful demon relic and becomes imbued with the essence of the demon it belonged to. Somehow, he's powerful enough to control the demon, and gets picked to go to a mysterious school where he'll learn to be a Jujutsu Sorcerer, so he can help the other Sorcerers retrieve the rest of the relics before they fall into the hands of demons. There's lots of action, a smidge of gore, and some funny moments too. It should be interesting to see how Yugi deals with an increasingly powerful demon sharing his body, and how the "demon of the week" battles go.

Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 1, by Gege Akutami is a manga style graphic novel. Yuji Itadori is resolved to save the world from cursed demons, but he soon learns that the best way to do it is to slowly lose his humanity and become one himself! In a world where cursed spirits feed on unsuspecting humans, fragments of the legendary and feared demon Ryomen Sukuna were lost and scattered about. Should any demon consume Sukuna’s body parts, the power they gain could destroy the world as we know it. Fortunately, there exists a mysterious school of Jujutsu Sorcerers who exist to protect the precarious existence of the living from the supernatural! Although Yuji Itadori looks like your average teenager, his immense physical strength is something to behold! Every sports club wants him to join, but Itadori would rather hang out with the school outcasts in the Occult Research Club. One day, the club manages to get their hands on a sealed cursed object. Little do they know the terror they’ll unleash when they break the seal.


Jujutsu Kaisen is a graphic novel with a good balance of character development and action. There is a great deal of world building that needs to go into a series starter, and this was done well in conjunction with the character introductions and start of growth. Itadori is a young adult that is dropped into a situation that he does not fully understand, but is trying to catch up and do his best to honor he grandfather's last wish. At the same time he is a little flighty and naive. Going along with him as he tries to find his place and the world of fighting curse energy is explained to him and readers alike is quite the adventure. I feel like there is so much more to learn about the major characters and the world, and look forward to reading more. My biggest issue is one that I often have with series like this, that the hook or cliff hanger at the end left me feeling like I was cheated out of some kind of resolution or ending. I knew this was likely, and is a common effort made to get readers hooked and eager for the next book. Sometimes it works, and other times it just makes me mad. In this case their ploy worked ad I am eager for volume two.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a well written and drawn manga with plenty of character development and action. I look forward to continuing to read this series.

Yuji has some trouble fitting in at school. He's super strong and fast, but doesn't want to go out for the track team. Instead, he ends up with the occult research club, sending him headfirst into a quarrel with demonic forces. School quickly becomes the least of his worries, as he discovers a mysterious power within him...by eating a demon's finger. Now he's thrown into this war of good vs. evil where he can certainly help out, but he might lose himself in the process.

Jujutsu Kaisen follows a great albeit well-tread path of a loner finding his place in the world as a chosen one of sorts. Creator Gege Akutami quickly establishes Yuji as a good yet reluctant kid, thrust into the spotlight after a series of bizarre events. All the while he's pushed along by the urge to do good, a message a dying loved one left him. That's noble, even if the way he does it is a little gross.

We learn the demonic forces preying on mankind can be traced back to one large entity trying to get its fingers back. Apparently years ago, people cut off its twenty digits (it has four arms) and each one has a tremendous amount of power. They're near impossible to destroy, but Yuji finds a way to absorb them by eating one.

This is pretty gross on its own, but what makes Jujutsu Kaisen stand out in the horror space is how the demonic abilities manifest within Yuji. A creepy mouth will appear on his hand or face, taunting him like a demented conscience. In order to tap into this power, Yuji must give into the demon. That means losing control. That's a frightening scenario, as it's unclear what this creature will do when it's in the driver's seat.

Jujutsu Kaisen is peppered with humor to balance out the scares. Some of the situations are so utterly bizarre that you have to smile, especially as Yuji gets settled in with at his new home with his new colleagues in the demon hunting league. It takes a special kind of strange to jump into this life and in that case, Yuji fits right in.

There are a wide assortment of demons in this volume. They come in all shapes and sizes, each creepier than the last. I can see how this series could take on a “monster of the week” setup as these folks hunt down the remaining fingers and put down demons along the way.

The monsters are met with swift action. Akutami fills these sequences with tense excitement as Yuji and the others go all out in fighting them. This is one aspect of manga that I absolutely love. The action scenes are so powerful and you feel every single moment of them. My eyes were darting all over the page as each panel delivered such impact.

Jujutsu Kaisen plants a strong foundation with this first volume. We're introduced to Yuji and this world of demons he's found himself in. There is plenty of runway for him to grow as a character and explore this new frightening path. All the while, he's learning what it takes to do good. That can be quite a mountain to climb, but it's clear he's willing to take the challenge. He's already taken the first step...err...gulp.

Well, I guess I found my newest binge read. I wasn't sure what to expect but the cover gave up Parasyte vibes and I loved Parasyte so I was curious enough to check this book out. Plenty to keep any reader curious and hooked and plain ol wanting to know more.

This was a really fun read. I was curious about it due to the new show on Crunchyroll. Manga and Anime are very popular in my community and I was wondering if this title would be appropriate for my YA collection. Thank you netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read it in advance. I think this title was a lot of fun. I found it appropriate for high schoolers throughout. The main character was a typical guy, a little cocky but still down to earth and likeable. It starts out with him in his school club that is interested in the paranormal/occult. Sometime later that day he's visiting his grandpa at the hospital and his dying wish is for his grandson not to die alone and help people. a Jujutsu sorcerer was tracking a cursed object and it turns out that the occult club is in possession of it and unknowingly release the demon. The main character is weirdly strong and adept at fighting the creature and stupidly swallows the cursed object thinking this would help him fight it. This act sets up the rest of the book and likely the series. I'm not typically personally interested in this type of story but the main character was a lot of fun and I'm interested to see how he handles future issues. I will be purchasing this for my library collection and hope my library teen patrons enjoy it as much as I did.

I'm going to be completely honest I'm still a bit confused as to what is going on in this series. I'm getting a hang of the world, which is really cool. In this world there exist curses which are basically a type of demon that wants to kill and eat people. Our protagonists of the series are a group of students who are training to rid the world of these curses. Having previously read the prequel story I am getting the hang of the concept and an understanding of the different ways that they can be killed and operate. Getting into the main story I can definitely see why others are absolutely fawning over it, but again I am still just a touch too confused to truly be into it. I definitely want to continue with the series to see how or if the prequel comes into an intersection with what is apparently our main story. The art was quite appealing and all of the character design was quite dynamic in my opinion. I'd give it a shot, maybe you'll understand it more than me.

I wanted to give this manga a go because of the popularity of the anime, and I have been hearing great things, so I wanted to see what it’s like. I didn’t know anything about the plot going into this. I first noticed the art style and it’s what initially drew me in, and it’s a delight to read through because it is creepy and action packed.

The monster in this give me chills. They’re scary and ugly, and some of them disgust you in how much they get under your skin. The premise of the story fits into the shonen story, with epic battles, and interesting challenges. I think this would be perfect for people who like Demon Slayer and Bleach.

The biggest let down is that things happen way too fast. The pacing is like a jackrabbit. The first few pages are so rushed and packed with story it fails to give the characters a grounded sense of their personalities. You get the basic stereotype they are, but it’s not very deep. Like when our main character swallows the finger, I felt more confused on why he would do that, not that it fit into his very basic characterisation. Because of this most of the characters come off as a little bland. They don’t deviate much to the typical shonen main character, but I’m hoping they have more time invested to become more fleshed out.

This is a great manga that has a promising start that can develop into a great series. If it can focus on characterisation a bit more, then this can be very strong.

This was an interesting start to what I hope will be a great series. It’s dark and has some really disgusting looking creatures so in that regard I really liked it. However I didn’t really get the chance to like the characters yet in this volume. I like the overall story and the action but the characters are kind of bland for me. I know that it will take time as they develop to really make an informed decision about whether I like them or not though. So I do plan on picking up more volumes to see where this will go.

As of now this was a fine start but I can’t say I was overall impressed by it, I did like it though.

Volume 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen features chapters 1 through 8, and honestly I'm a little bit torn when it comes to reviewing the first volume. The whole premise mentioned in the synopsis screams at something I'd like, but for me the first volume fell a bit flat? But... I read on a couple of chapters through the Shonen Jump app and things started to get a lot better very quickly in the second volume.

This review of course is focused on the first volume though, so I won't mention the ones after anymore!

After a brief page showing Megumi Fushiguro, we're taken to the main character Yuji Itadori being in school. He's joined up to an extracurricular class based on the occult and the track and field coach ends up being super upset over it, thus challenges him to a little strength test. Itadori wins by a mile and ends up bumping into Fushiguro, who's shocked that he can sense a cursed object on him.

The story then skips to Itadori visiting his grandfather in hospital where his grandfather has a last heart-to-heart with him. I found it pretty strange how his death doesn't really affect Itadori, as in there aren't even any tears? I think this is more to do with the pacing of Jujutsu over anything else though because things happen super quick throughout.

Fushiguro finds Itadori and is basically after the cursed object, but then Itadori lets him know that it's actually back at school with the other two members of his occult class. This is when all hell breaks loose and we get an action-packed scene of curses attacking the characters.

So, how does Itadori make it so then win? He eats a cursed finger. It's partly smart, partly stupid, partly gross and also partly funny but it ends up that Itadori is the one in a million chance of someone being able to basically merge with a curse. All of this and the above happens in the first chapter alone, if you're after an idea for the pacing!

This sets up the bigger story as we learn Fushiguro is from a team who fight curses, including Satoru Gojo who's a teacher that I can't help but be reminded of Naruto's Kakashi Hatake when reading. He's sassy and appears carefree but also super strong. (This is by no means a bad thing, as I love Kakashi.) Honestly, my favourite two characters in this volume are by far Fushiguro and Gojo. Both of them seem to have a lot more to them based off this one volume and Fushiguro just seems super sweet too!

Itadori's finger consumption has a devastating effect, as the organisation/high school Jujutsu Kaisen basically now want him dead since he's got a curse in him. Gojo manages to convince them to let him live until he's been able to merge with the remaining curses and then kill him. Strangely enough, Itadori agrees to the plan as he doesn't want to let anymore people die from curses (his resilience in that manner is pretty great to see).

Volume 1 ends with Itadori and his two classmates (Fushiguro and a girl called Nobara Kugisaki, who's pretty cool but we don't see much of her character other than that she's a pretty decent fighter) being on a mission against super strong curses, and Itadori throughout shows that he refuses to back down.

Itadori isn’t your average high school student - he’s super fast and really strong. One day, his fellows in the Paranormal Research Club discover a cursed object and awaken a demon. Sorcerers from the Jujutsu Academy try to clean up the mess, but Itadori decides to ingests the object in a move to control the demon. This should have killed him, but instead, he is able to control the demon from within his own body. The Jujutsu reveal that, under normal circumstances, Itadori would be killed to destroy the part of the demon inside him, but they instead seize the opportunity that Itadori might be a perfect vessel for controlling this powerful demon, and they ask him to help retrieve the rest of the cursed items around the world and destroy the demon instead.

Jujutsu Kaisen is another entry in the genre of demon manga, and one volume is not nearly enough to judge whether it is a worthy entry. The world building at the beginning of this volume is pretty choppy, and we get these little snippets of disparate stories between Itadori at school and him visiting his dying grandfather in a hospital. It seems pretty tidy that Itadori is able to pick up and move across the country to attend Jujutsu Academy without saying goodbye to his friends or anything. However, if the build of storyline from volume two forward becomes a little more steady and developed, this has the potential to be an interesting series in a crowded field of demon stories. Akutami's illustrations have plenty of creepy demons, but the character designs are very basic with all Jujutsu sorcerers in the same black, full-body zip-up.

VIZ rates this as Teen Plus for fantasy violence, for the amount of blood and scary demons.

This one is pretty interesting, I still need to read volume 2 and so far. But as this moment I like the characters and story and will continue it as long as my library continues to have it so I can read it! Thank you for letting me read this manga- at least the first volume!

This was freaking epic! I didn't know anything about this except that it was paranormal with a bit of mystery. The art is amazing and after reading this I was excited to watch the anime.
