What a great start to a manga! I had recently started watching the tv adaptation and decided I wanted to read the original source material too. The art is phenomenal and the story is gripping! I can’t wait until the next volume. |
An excellent shounen manga with Bleach vibes--scary, action-packed and with complex interesting characters that will keep you reading to find out what happens to them next. |
Thank you to both Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this title. This feels like a retro 90's manga. The drawing style is fun and the story is typical of the genre, starting with a poor family, a hero who becomes an orphan (essentially), a montage of training, and then moving on to the story of avenging said family. It's traditional and it was fine. I won't be paying to read on in the series as it didn't hook me and I wouldn't recommend it to our library's manga group. |
This just made me reminisce on seasonn one!!! I absolutely love Tanjiro and Nezuko. They are a bomb brother-sister pair. The whole demon fighting scene when Nezuko kicked his head off and Tanjiro lost it when the demon still moved and spoke will forever crack me!! The training scenes are still epic. This was great. Definitely recommend if you've seen the anime and for those who are interested in watching it but haven't yet!! |
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has a killer opening sequence for a manga. Tanjiro's Kamado's entire family is killed while he is out selling charcoal in. All except his younger sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a demon. Rather than let her be killed by the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjiro commits to finding a way to save Nezuko and starts on the path to becoming a Demon Slayer himself. I don't normally associate shounen manga with particularly tight storytelling, but the stakes and world are set up so fast that I was invested almost immediately. I adore the art style of this, too - beautiful and horrific in equal turns and with equal detail. There's a great trend in quasi-horror shounen manga going on at the moment where they're not afraid to go dark and bloody and I love it. It's not gratuitous, but makes the threats feel real and immediate rather than "goon of the week". Worth the hype! |

Though there is a good amount of violence and gore, the series is a great addition to the anime world. With it lovely art and compelling story, action/adventure fans are sure to enjoy! |
I'm already so in love with this story and with these characters from just reading this first volume. I fully intend on reading the entire series, and I'm so excited to get even further into it. It's just amazing. The art isn't overly elaborate, but it doesn't leave anything to be desired either. It's quaint but pleasing. |
Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for the advance copy of this book! I loved this book. The art work was done very well. I had no issues following the story. The atmosphere was everything I wanted it to be. I loved the plot and storyline in the book. I cant wait to move on to book 2. I loved the characters in this story. I highly recommend this author. I will be looking for other works in the future from this author. |
'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 1' by Koyoharu Gotouge is a manga about a young boy learning to fight demons. Tanjiro's fmaily lives in the mountains. One day he visits home and his entire family has been attacked by monsters. The only survivor is his little sister Nezuko. Wisdom says he should kill her, but there is still a bond between them. Now if Tanjiro can become a demon fighter, maybe he can find a way to help her. I liked this story and characters. It had a nice retro feel in story and art. The story seems really grim, but doesn't become oppressively so. I wouldn't mind reading more in this series. I received a review copy of this manga from VIZ Media and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga. |
Although I watched the anime of Demon Slayer before reading this, I was happily surprised that it is an enjoyable read for those new to the series or those who have seen the anime. The art is crisply drawn with great attention to detail. The story moves a brisk pace that keeps you invested in the story. The characters are wonderfuly thought out and each highlighting their uniqueness. Awesome adventure and action scenes. A well balance manga for those who enjoy action, comedy and the paranormal. I give it 5 stars! |
Demon Slayer was an okay read and I'd be interested in reading the next Volume before I decide to call it quits. |
Looks promising, a little vague about the world and the way things work in this type of society but slowly but surely did grasp the workings of the characters' lifestyles. Could be another big one for shounen manga. We'll see... |
The genre of shonen manga has been significantly exhausted. This unique story brings to us a new set of characters with unique backgrounds. The challenges that they face are non-traditional and interesting. |
Demon Slayer follows a boy whose family is killed by a demon. His sister survives but she has been transformed. He sets out on a journey to save her. This manga was emotionally gripping and different to the typical mangas that I have read. |
I had no prior knowledge of this manga before going in, aside from seeing a few Nezuko cosplays and thinking she looked kind of sweet. In this manga, Tanjiro must learn to slay demons, protect his sister Nezuko, and restore her humanity. It has a pretty dramatic opening, which hooked me in. I liked the character designs, they're cute and unique, and kind of quirky. And the family relationship between Tanjiro and Nezuko is really sweet, even with the horrible circumstances. The art is appealing to look at as well. It's quite simple most of the time, and the frames aren't too cluttered. It is quite fast paced, I felt like time was going by super quickly. A lot happens in this first volume! I'm hoping for later volumes that it slows down a bit as I felt like we were skipping over character development and things like that. But it is a fun and easy read. Despite it covering some pretty terrible events (demons that eat humans!), it doesn't feel super dark or depressing which was nice, I enjoyed reading it. My favourite part was Nezuko shrinking to fit into a basket, that scene was adorable (and funny). I'll probably keep reading this manga, I'd like to see where the story goes. |
Demon Slayer has quickly become one of my favorite Manga of all time. We follow Tangiro who, after a series of misfortune, is left with his sister turned into a demon and the rest of his family slaughtered. This first volume details the road to Tangiro becoming a demon slayer, but the cliffhanger at the end gutted me because I wanted so badly to read on! I have since binged the entire anime and am super invested in the manga. I would recommend it to anyone! |
The book had a slow start but picked up quickly when Tanjiro returns home to find his family has been slain, and his sister has been turned into a demon. He begins his journey as a demon-hunter-in-training. I was hoping that the story would progress a little faster, but it was good anyway. |
arc provided by the publisher and netgalley in exchange for an honest review So, I had zero expectations going into this, all I knew was that there was something to do with demons and demon slayers. That’s still.. all I really know? I wish we would’ve gotten more backstory about the demons and the demon slayers and how all of that came to be. I wasn’t really blown away by this one, it was a pretty average read. The plot was simple and predictable and the main character didn’t have as much character building as I would have hoped. This also involved a lot more child death that I thought it would contain. I will say that the ending did leave me intrigued so I might try volume two but I don’t know when that will be. 2/5 ⭐️ tw: child death(it gets pretty detailed at some points), death of parent/loved one, blood, death, violence. |

Not for me. Shonen series with lots of battle scenes and some monsters at the end. Pinocchio mask guy was creepy. |
One of the best manga of all time. I don't even know where to begin with how to describe my pure obsession with this series. Artwork? Phenomenal. Characters? Incredibly developed with compelling backgrounds, all of them. Anime? Sticks to the manga and is beautifully done. But back to the manga, volume 1. Tanjiro is a simple older brother to a simple family. He sells charcoal to help make money for his family but even while poor they are happy and love being together. Tanjiro's father has passed so it is just him, his mother, and his younger siblings. Nezuko is closest in age to him and also helps take care of the siblings with his mother while Tanjiro goes down to town to help the people there and sell charcoal. It's on such a day that he is just leaving town when a neighbor notices how dark it has gotten. He begs Tanjiro inside and tells him a tale of demons who sneak in the night and slaughter families. Tanjiro feels bad for the lonely man who tells tales. The next day bright and early he heads home and finds... his entire family has been slaughtered. They are all dead but Nezuko .... and this is where you should stop if you don't want spoilers! So Nezuko is alive but just barely. Tanjiro puts her on his back and races down the mountain when Nezuko attacks him! What is happening?! He is trying to fight her off and protect her when another person appears. A demon slayer?! He declares Nezuko is a demon and must die but Tanjiro protects her with his last breath before passing out. Just when the man is going to end Nezuko he sees something he's never seen before: Nezuko is not attacking Tanjiro's unconscious body. She's protecting it. Thus begins the journey of letting Nezuko the demon and Tanjiro her brother live, and Tanjiro becoming a demon slayer. You should read the manga, (I have every hard copy printed) and watch the anime to see the action scenes in ... well, action! This is in my top 5 manga of all time. |
