Wow!! This was so good! The story really took a turn that I was not expecting but I am here for it! The art is stunning as well. Can’t wait for the next volume!! |
Very excited to dive into volume 1 of this series after binging the first season of the anime last Halloween. It is an excellent story, full of twists and turns, with intelligent protagonists and, at times, even more intelligent villains. The art work is evocative and detailed, bringing to life this psychological story of children attempting to escape the orphanage they were raised in. What I love about this series especially is that it really lets there be weight to characters' decisions and the situation they find themselves in. An absolute must read for anyone interested in psychological horror or just very very good storytelling. |

I had been looking for the next manga series to dive into and this was perfect! Such an intriguing story. I love how on one hand it is sweet and innocent, featuring little children and a doting caregiver, but then gets extremely dark and ominous. The art also is very well done. |
Gorgeous manga for kids and adults that will convince even the most reluctant of readers to get stuck in! They won't even realise they're reading. I thought it was going to be a spin-off of Peter Pan and the lost boys but it was so original, fresh and engaging! Loved it! Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. |
Based on the title I expected a graphic novel very similar to the Peter Pan, that was not what I got at all. That story presented was compelling and original. I will be picking up the other books in the series as soon as I can. |
This was an interesting read. I enjoyed the plot and characters and sparked my interest in watching the anime. |
This was NOT at all what I was expecting from this manga. But boy was it so much better than I could have expected. I was pleasantly surprised. I haven’t yet been able to continue reading the next volumes. But I absolutely want to. |

This was the first Manga that ive ever read and i was really excited to read it as i had heard so many good things about the series that when i saw this on here i knew i had to jump at the chnace to read it. I wasnt surprised when it turned out that i loved this book so much. I loved that the characters were children een though while reading they seemed much older then what they acctually were. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of the book and how the reader got to play detective with the children and try and figure out what wad going on. |
I didn't get to finish before it was archived and I can't wait to get a copy in order to finish. I really enjoyed what I was able to read. |
This manga was totally not what I expected at all but it was actually better? This is a creepy mysterious manga that follows a group of children who live in an orphanage and have never seen the outside world. When they turn 12 they leave the orphanage, thinking that they will be joining a foster family but this might not be the truth...This was a clever and intriguing volume filled with unexpected revelations, I can't wait to read the rest. |
The Promised Neverland by Kaiu Shirai is an interesting and captivating manga which loosely follows the beloved children's classic - Peter Pan by J.M.Barrie. The plot examines the lives of three of the brightest kids - Emma, Norman and Ray - who live in the Grace Field House Orphanage. They are happy and carefree, however, there is a dark truth hidden from them about the outside world. |
Absolutely amazing! Just one volume, and I’m already obsessed. I’ve checked out more volumes from my library and I fully intend on reading the entire series. It’s just so enrapturing and I love the main characters. Amazing start to a series that I have very high expectations for. |
This was definitely a strong start for this Manga series. I can't say I did not enjoy these characters story because I did, however it did not interest me as much as I thought it would. I 100% looooved the main character, Emma, a whole lot and she was probably the driving factor for me personally. I wish we had gotten to know Ray more, considering he seemed to be quite an interesting character. Norman was a little grey to me. Not quite likeable but not bad either. Overall, I really enjoyed the plot, however, the characters were still a little green for my liking. Will definitely continue reading though. Thank you to VIZ Media for the ARC. |
Nice artwork, messed up story (in a good way!). The kids at Grace Field House orphanage want for nothing- they have good food, a nice place to live, they're clothed well, schooled, taken care of by a kind caregiver they call "Mom," and have only one rule: stay away from the gate. Now doesn't that sound like a great set-up for all hell breaking loose? Two of the orphans find out all is not as it seems at Grace Field House, and a sinister plot is revealed...... #ThePromisedNeverlandVol1 #NetGalley |
'The Promised Neverland, Vol. 1' by Kaiu Shirai with art by Posuka Demizu is a manga about a group of children living in what seems to be an idyllic setting. Emma and her fellow orphans live in Grace Field House which is run by a woman they call Mom. They are well fed, and tested. They can play in the forest, but they are forbidden from going near the gate. One night, Emma and her friends go near the gate and find out the horrible truth about their existence. Now they have to find a way to escape. I really liked the set up and everything up to the kids finding things out. After that, the pacing just kind of got stuck for me. The planning to escape was endless and they hadn't even left by the end. The art is quite good and I liked the style. I received a review copy of this manga from VIZ Media and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga. |

I wouldn't call this a Peter Pan retelling but more of a Peter Pan inspired story. This takes a dark and intriguing twist that keeps you on wanting to know more. The prison escape story clouded in unknowns will lead you feeling frustrated right alongside the characters as they face increasing obstacles. Not necessarily a horror but definitely gives a creepy feel that you'll love. Great story to get sucked into. |
I will be complete honest. I did not realize what this was when I started to read it. My mind for some reason did not register the fact it is a horror manga. Because of that my review might be a bit different. I am not a lover of horror. I did though find the story interesting, but because of my preferences I will not be getting the rest of these. But if you are into horror and like manga i suggest picking this series up. |
Stop me if you've heard this one: in The Promised Neverland, children live a happy life in an orphanage in the countryside, where they're cared for by Mother until they're adopted! ... Yeah, you know that's not how this goes, the house is absolutely a trap, and the children are being raised as food. I can't say that I like the art; it's good at motion, but all of the proportions feel a bit off in a way I can't put my finger on, especially for the faces. But I'm so invested in the story! The children have believable plans and concerns for each other, and their reactions are fairly smart, but because they're actually written as children, it's very easy to believe that they're going to be outplanned or give themselves away. It's tense! I wasn't expecting it to be! And for all the characters are familiar tropes, I'm still invested! The worldbuilding so far is fairly scant; what the characters believe is true is explained, but we've only got hints for what actually is true. Like, extrapolating what we know about Mother raises some horrible suggestions for the fate of any children that don't get eaten, and that's all we've got. Basically, I don't know that it's doing anything new and interesting yet, but I found myself getting impatient that I was writing this review instead of reading the next volume, so it's doing something right! This was a great read. The art was cool and the plot was super intense. I really love the character of Emma. It starts of sweet and nice and take a very dark turn which I liked. I have heard the anime is also really good. I am definitely interested in reading more. |
So I've been um-ing and ah-ing about whether to start this series as it seems to be one of those that polarises fans of manga. When I finally managed to sit down and read this one, I was pleasantly surprised. Having been told it was a horror manga, I was expecting blood and gore when initially all I got was a seemingly normal story of an orphanage and its inhabitants. It was quite obvious though that there was something more sinister to come. When it finally gained some traction, I loved the abundance of twists and turns, while also loving the character art. Overall it was a good manga, but I'm not sure whether I could class it as a favourite. Oh well, looks like I will just have to keep going with the series before making a decision! |
