With an Advanced Reader Copy graciously provided by NetGalley, readers are introduced to the amusing daily adventures of Tatsu, the legendary "Immortal Dragon."

This was an interesting manga for me. I'm giving The Way of the Househusband a 3.5-4 stars rating. It wasn't what I was expecting, and I was surprised how much I liked reading it.

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and the author Kousuke Oono. This book was hilarious. Rough and tough gangster turned to a soft loving husband making sure his wife is well taken care of and he is still has the mentality so be careful when you interact with him. Haha..it was good.

Weird and the best

It’s so weird, barely has a continuing story from chapter to chapter and yet I LOVED IT. I can’t wait to read the rest. The art is so good and is like every yakuza movie I’ve ever seen.

Delightful read with a lot of slice of life irony! Love the humor. It helps that there is an anime adaptation but I think readers will like the dynamic between the househusband as he navigates every day life of the community around him!

This manga is so adorable. A gritty and sometimes scary former yakuza member becomes a doting househusband and does simple daily routines such as grocery shopping and cooking. It is so fun to watch the housewives of the neighborhood slowly get over his scary demenor and warm up to him.

Opening scene... a man is at the sink, shirtless, he has a large, detailed dragon tattoo across his back and numerous scars. Meet Tatsu, the Immortal Dragon, rumored to have taken down yakuza families barehanded. The entire family! What is Tatsu going to do? Why make and adorable bear bento for his wife. Miku is sadly running late for work and forgets her lunch. As a supportive househusband, Tatsu-chan decides to take Miku her bento, unfortunately he is stopped by the police because he is scary looking.

Hilarious vignettes show Tatsu perfecting his household skills and adapting his yakuza abilities in ways that will impress you. How will his former yakuza rivals react when they bump into him again?

I really enjoyed this opening volume. I look forward to reading about Miku and Tatsu's first meeting in a future volume.

I found this to be an interesting and amusing manga. The concept seemed to be a bit weird but it was actually quite enjoyable and I can't wait to read the next installment.

'The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 1' by Kousuke Oono with translation by Sheldon Drzka is a manga about an unusual man who is content to cook and clean.

This manga is the story of what happens when a feared ex-yakuza nicknamed The Immortal Dragon gives it all up to become a househusband. There are random people who want to kill him, and all he wants is to shop for bargains. There is the honorable sending out of the Roomba to clean. There are cute cookies and bento boxes to be made as well as the funny aprons he wears over his scary yakuza clothing.

I thought this manga was hilarious. The setups are great and everything feels like a really fresh take on the fish out of water comedy. The art is great too. I'd definitely love to read more in this series.

I received a review copy of this manga from VIZ Media and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.

Really interesting take on the mafia/yakuza trope, pretty much "what you see is what you get," but it's an amazing concept that is executed well. (Pun intended)

This is a fresh take on stay at home spouses, and hilarious to boot! I really enjoyed the main character and how he reacts in certain situations.

A hilarious contemporary story about the everyday life of a former Yakuza.

Tatsu was known as one of the most deadly members of the Yakuza before his sudden disappearance. Now he tries to master life as a full-time house husband while his wife works hard as a fashion designer. He does everyday things but cannot escape his past and intimidating looks.

Tatsu is a very funny character less so because of what he says, but rather what he does. His intimidating looks and rigid approach to simple tasks make a fun read. The plot is engaging and the illustration captures the humor and irony well. The cast of main characters is small and the character development is gradual throughout the chapters. The illustrations are full of detail expressing as much as the dialogue. There is limited text, allowing the images to speak for themselves.

I readily recommend this manga purely for the ridiculous comedy.

Quick Thoughts:

Quick read- both very short and fast-paced short vignettes.
This was hilarious some of it was subtle humor and some of it was more on the nose but it all worked well together
I love the premise- what better candidate for king of domesticity than a former Yakuza
The art is to die for
there were some truly heartwarming moments in here
I need more

This comic made me sort of chuckle several times, but there's not a lot of substance to it. If this were an anime it would be one of those where each episode is only 3 minutes, haha. Each chapter is basically a one-shot and they're only loosely interconnected, all about this man who used to be a boss in the Yakuza (The Immortal Dragon, scary!) and is now a househusband for his highly successful wife. It's mostly a lot of him shopping, cooking, learning to DIY, etc wearing a cute apron and kicking the crap out of anyone who crosses him by, like, bruising his peaches or something. It's funny and cute, but I don't think I'll be reading any more of the series as there's not really an overarching plot to draw me in.

This manga was a delight to read. It follows a former yakuza legend called "The Immortal Dragon" as he pursues absolute excellence in his role as house husband to his career motivated wife. The story is arranged as a series of vignettes and each one is comedic and interesting as the material also shines a light on Japanese home culture. This is a very fun read.

I’d seen this series around for awhile and in the bookstore at times. I had a flick through to see what it’s like, and I have to say it’s hilarious.

We follow our househusband, who used to be a member of the yakuza before settling down with his career wife. It combines the banality of everyday life and homemaking with the severity of the yakuza energy and lifestyle. It leads to some misconstrued situations and perfect comedic timing. I did read the most recent volume, but I do believe that one is stronger in comedy. The first volume introduces the premise and characters, but it’s very much dependent on the slice of life formula.

I do hope we get more backstory into his relationship with his wife, how they met, and why he left the yakuza. The series is so dependent on episodic moments that it can get tiring and repetitive at times. I feel like a light story arc can strengthen the series into a more memorable one. My favourite scene was the husband and wife shopping and trying to find new outfits to make him less intimidating.

This is a funny and lighthearted series, perfect for anyone who wants something a bit wholesome

Excuse me, I think I have a new favorite manga series.

This is absolutely adorable and hilarious. I love how each chapter starts off with a vague scene that comes across as violent or sketchy, and then there's always a reveal that his goings-on are totally innocent and helpful. Honestly, just absolutely precious and I laughed out loud so many times reading this one volume that I already can't wait for Vol. 2!

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this review copy in exchange for an honest review!

Diverting gag manga that bases its humor on pretty outdated gender roles (He's a Yakuza Assaasin! And he's cooking! And telling a Roomba how to clean!) but actually held my interest from the domestic vignettes and from the way the househusband does his husbandry yakuza style. Slightly retrograde, but still really charming.

This book is so good! It has great humor, tons of awesome action and the perfect amount of adorableness. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

My friend recommended this to me, and I wasn't sold on the idea, but here I am, totally trash for this series now after one volume.

This has to be one of the most unique Shonen manga I've ever read, with this slice-of-life aspect mixed with intense characters and action, yet it's about...a guy who cleans his house and likes to cook for his wife. It's honestly super wholesome.

I really hope the story continues with this vignette-style for each chapter, where they're each connected sequentially but that's about it. I'm already fascinated by the different characters, and I want to see how the world changes around this mysterious househusband.
