Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. This was a great read right from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. A story told me 3 separate women. Would recommend. |
Thanks to Orion Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. #LikeMotherLikeDaughter #NetGalley Ellie Croft certainly knows how to put the thrill in a thriller. 'Like Mother, Like Daughter', is a literal page-turner that simply oozes with suspense. Then there is the tension which builds and builds to unbearable level, until the stunning, final denouement. What intrigued me about this book is the perennial question of nature vs nurture, which is at the heart of this intricately plotted psychological thriller. Put simply, are we born or made? Is that certain something which makes us who we are hardwired into our DNA, or, does a confluence of other factors, like upbringing, for example, contribute more persuasively to who we are. These ultimately unresolvable questions are intelligently wrapped around a thriller-like format by Ellie Croft. It is the core of the mystery of who we are, and the core of the mystery of the tangled interplay of human relations of the main protagonists in this book. Kat has two daughters: Imogen and Jemima. All straightforward, apart from the fact that Imogen is the biological daughter of serial killers. Imogen's lineage is the catalyst for greater scrutiny from her adoptive mother, Kat. Is the scrutiny warranted? Nature or nurture? What is not in doubt is that Imogen's biological heritage is about to catch up with her.... Can Kat protect her daughters from the insidious evil that threatens to destroy all their lives? I'll leave that for you to find out. What is not in doubt is that this is a corker of a thriller that will hook you from the get-go. Tautly-plotted with an all pervasive air of menace, this is a psychological thriller that really lives up to its billing. 4.5 stars |
Wow! Such an amazing book, that builds up and up - and when you think you’ve read the climax and next will be the aftermath, it twists again and there’s a shocking and unexpected climax. I absolutely loved this book, it was unputdownable! Fabulous fabulous fabulous. |

Wow!! I absolutely loved this one !! Ellie Croft has a beautiful way of writing !! The story was told from 3 different perspectives and different timelines and it works really well !! Highly recommend!! |
I really enjoyed reading Like Mother, Like Daughter. It's told from the points of view of Kat, Imogen, and Sally. As the plot builds at the start of the novel it's clear there are secrets in the past lives of all the characters. As the story picked up pace and the past was revealed I was quite shocked about what had gone on, and found it all terrifying and creepy. The timing of the story means that the reader finds out how much danger the characters are in as they go to meet their fate and I was left with a continual unease that it was all going to get so much worse for them. There are some deeply flawed, evil characters in this novel. However I think Elle Croft handles some difficult and troubling issues in a sensitive way, and created a balance in those characters by offering the reader an insight into why they may have ended up so damaged. The twist at the end leaves an interesting question around the extent people are 'born evil' or a product of their upbringing. Overall - a fantastic psychological thriller that I couldn't put down. Highly recommended. |
A story told by three separate women Kat, Imogen and Sally. Kat is worried when her teenage daughter Imogen starts to behave badly and then she goes missing. Kat then finds out that her daughter has recently had a DNA test done that would have shown that she was not her biological child. A psychological thriller with twists and turns. Thank you to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review. |
I enjoyed reading this book and I felt that the story was well executed. The characters had depth and added a lot to the overall sense of the book and it was very enjoyable to keep turning the pages. |

A quick-paced novel which is told from the perspectives of the main 3 female characters; Imogen, a teenager, Kat, Imogen's adopted mum , and Sally, Imogen's biological mum (and a serial killer to boot). When Imogen goes missing after discovering that she's adopted, Kat fears the worst. This novel had an interesting concept of nature versus nurture when raising a child. However, the characters weren't written well enough for me to care about them particularly. There were quite a few twists, some of which seemed to be thrown in for the sake of having twists. I found this book to be a quick read, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it. |
I was looking forward to premise of this novel, especially after Good Me Bad Me, which was simillar - but this one didnt quite live up to what I was hoping for. Despite it being pacy and a good page turner, I didn't really engage with any of the characters and the plot twists were predictable. It was a fun, solid read though - a good one for a holiday. |

3.75 stars I read this in one sitting. It was a proper page tturner. I'm picturing a lot of people on the beach with this one this year. The classic story of nature over nurture and is evil inherited. Sally was a fascinating character, abused and sold by her father, she then goes on to have numerous children and in turn abuse and murder them.she sees this as protecting them from the outside world. As one of a trio of three narrator's,she's probably who kept me gripped. The other two, Kat and Imogen are dragged into a story that twists in the right places, and left me at the end with an "I knew it" moment. Fab stuff. |
What a fantastic thrilling read. It was great from beginning to end. It had me hooked. Was on the edge of my seat with twists and turns . Never quite knowing where it’s taking you. It was very well written |

Blimey. What an amazing book. If you can only read one book this year make it this one. Amazing. Suspense at its best. |
Finished this fabulous proof by this evening. A very clever plot that twisted and turned at an incredible pace with some truly dark characters. |

I really enjoyed this book, it had me gripped almost from the start. Plenty of twists and turns along the way, and a really shocking ending. |
Thanks to @netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this ARC! I was addicted to this book, each chapter was from Kat, Imogen and Sally's POV. It was fast paced and I found myself getting so hooked! I loved Imogen's character throughout but especially at the end, absolutely pulled on my heart strings. This is one of the best thrillers I've read this year! The end and the twist absolutely had me 😳 I was not expecting the book to go the way it heading but it was amazing!! |
The book grips you from the first page. One daughter goes missing, and it is revealed that she is, in fact, adopted. But also that her natural mother is a serial killer. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep the suspense in this great novel. And the last couple of pages made me gasp with surprise! However, with the exception of the serial killer, the characters aren't well drawn; I didn't feel invested in their dramas. I would highly recommend this book. Perfect as a Summer holiday read. Thank you to Netgalley for letting me have a digital copy in return for giving an unbiased review. |
Kat loves her daughters, Imogen and Jemima. Along with her husband, they are the best things in her life. But while she adores Jemima wholeheartedly, she has always felt concern when it comes to Imogen. She may appear like the perfect 16 year old, but her heritage hides a dark secret, and Kat is terrified that her perfect family might be about to fall apart. Because Imogen's biological parents are serial killers, and much as Kat would hate to admit it, she worries about who her beloved daughter will become. Nature or nurture - which is strongest? Kat is about to find out... I absolutely love these kinds of thrillers - quick and easy reads that lure you in immediately and make you want to finish it all in one sitting. Plot wise, I won't be commenting, as I really feel like its one that you're better off reading a bit blind (that way you get to fully appreciate the twists and turns along the way!). What I will say is that it is very unusual, and really stands out against others in the genre. I also thought that the writing was really strong. Croft makes great use of a dual narrative structure, alternating between the POV of mum Kat and her adoptive daughter Imogen, as well as some chapters from the perspective of Imogen's biological mother Sally. Sally's chapters are particularly harrowing, and offer a terrifying insight into the mind of a serial killer. It was also really interesting to read some sections set in the past which reflect on the complexities of how Kat and Dylan made the decision to adopt the child of a murderer, as well as reading the present day chapters which show how Imogen's past have influenced how Kat treats her. This was a really unique and interesting read, that reflected on a range of complex issues. To what extent does your heritage determine your fate? Can you ever truly escape the horrors of a traumatic past? Or is your path destined even from birth? I absolutely loved this book, and I would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy a good thriller and a quick and enjoyable read. I can't wait to see what she produces next! Disclaimer - I was lucky enough to be provided with an advance reading copy by NetGalley. This has not affected my review in any way, and all opinions are my own. |
I really like this book. Its witty and engaging, and I was left absolutely floored by the ending. The clues were there, but the reader is really cleverly led down the 'I know how this is going to end' path. |
I’m leaving a middle star review because this book didn’t work for me but that doesn’t mean it’s not for you! Too slow a start, if a book can’t grip me in the first 10% then it’s not worth my time. |
Quite a chilling read but very hard to get into. If you don't mind the slow starters and having to read some lines a few times then give this book a try. If not then like me you'll probably want to give it a miss. |
