Lady Mary Mowbrah, daughter of a duke, fell in love with Duncan Starrett son of a youngest son of a retired army colonel, a man well below her station in life. Mary and Duncan ran away to Gretna Green and married. He went off to war only to return a changed man both physically and mentally. He returns home a very broken man and Mary rushes to his side and refuses to think Duncan might die. He fears a future is impossible for them and Mary is fighting both him, his stubbornness and their love. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.

Worthy of a Duke's daughter.
Duncan Starrett followed the drum in hopes of making himself worthy of marrying a Duke's daughter. He returns years later as a Colonel, but severely injured. Mary still loves Duncan and she won't give up until she has him for her husband. A very emotional love story that's sometimes uplifting, sometimes not, but compelling nonetheless.

This was an enjoyable book to read. It had two main characters who were interesting especially Mary who was very strong. It was a love story written well. There was plenty to learn about the training of War horses and the war. I recommend that you read this book.

Lady Mary is the daughter of a duke and Duncan is the son of a colonel and beneath her station. They fell in love while young (Mary was 16); Duncan joins the military in order to prove that he is worthy of her. Five years later, Duncan returns from the war disabled and with an uncertain future. Mary and Duncan need to know each other as mature adults, rekindle their love and overcome some severe obstacles. The story was realistic, the two leading characters were admirable and it was wonderful getting to know them and their families (even Catherine, Mary's mother). Many romances end at the wedding and thankfully this did not. The ups and downs of their romance and the marriage were well written.

The book is very detailed which at times was fascinating and at other times, made me a bit impatient. Overall a wonderful romance set in the 1790's.

Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for an ARC.

An absolutely enchanting spin on the classic Persuasion tropes. This story was absolutely heart-twisting and so beautifully written. I have never read this author and would love to read them again! 4.5 stars!

3 of 5 stars

Lady Mary Mowbrah has loved Duncan Starrett since she was 16 years old. Waiting for him to return from the war, it was a long 5 years before he returned, gravely injured. They were both different people now and it will take love and patience for them to reconnect. Will their love blossom now?

I enjoyed this book, but there was something just a bit lacking for me in this story. The other 3 stories in the series were easily devoured. Not so with this book. I found I could put it down time and time again. I kept waiting for a huge conflict or twist in the storyline. The biggest conflict in the book is Duncan's feelings of unworthiness and that got old after a while. Ms. Golden is a talented writer and has woven some memorable characters into the series. I did find the epilogue confusing with so many couples and their children mentioned. I didn't really care about any of them and it took a while before the reader learns whether or not Mary and Duncan have any more children. It was a decent read, but certainly not my favorite of the series.

This was a lovely addition to the series, fourth in the series. Mary and Duncan fell in love when they were young but when they meet again, Duncan in particular is a different person emotionally. I loved watching them grow together and overcome obstacles. In particular, I did like Mary and Catherine making peace with their relationship. I loved seeing the other very well liked characters from the previous books and seeing how their families have grown. This is a really nice series for anyone who likes historical fiction with a romance that actually has character development/growth.

This is another delightful addition to the Enchantress series. Duncan Starrett and Lady Mary Mowbrah fell in love in their youth, yet found their relationship doomed, by parental disapproval. In an attempt to gain approval from Mary’s parents, he buys a commission in the army, in the hope that he can earn a rank and approval. Yet his actions, ultimately lead to his downfall. Several years later, he returns a broken man. Fearing that he will not survive, Mary returns to his bedside, determined that he will survive and return to his former self.
This is a touching second chance romance. The intensity of the romance and the determination of both Duncan and Mary, had me reading late into the night. This story has stayed with me, long after the last page.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
