Welcome to Your Period! is a book that every girl and young woman needs to read at least once. It's a thorough and scientifically accurate guide to having a vagina and period. I love how they address virtually everything related to the topic, yet manage to explain with such easy language - it's a great way to help girls understand what's up without going into medical details that they don't necessarily want or can even understand yet. The added notes from girls and women about their experiences is another amazing part to the book - it helps see that we all have some awkward and/or bad experiences, but in the end all is good, as having a period is normal. The illustrations in the book are another great thing about it - we see girls of all shapes and colours, which serves to reminds us that we all get our periods the same way, no matter how different we may look on the outside. And the pictures themselves are cool and beautiful. Another great point is that the authors mention sanitary products outside of traditional pads and tampons - cups, reusable pads and period panties are amazing and deserve to be more widely know and used. I'm a bit sad that when I was at the age when I needed such a book, they weren't really accessible in my country, or very short and missing a lot of information outside "you bleed and need pads", I would have really benefited from it. On the other hand, I'm excited that young girls will be able (soon) to get this book and read it and learn. Overall, amazing book, highly recommended! *Thanks to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for providing me with an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.* |
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Unfortunately I did not notice that is in protected pdf format only and I cannot read that format. I will make sure to pay attention next time. |
In this book, we learn all about starting your period with handy advice about what they are, types of products to use of which there are more options now than before when I started mine years ago and how it can differ for every woman out there. It was a colourful and nicely illustrated book including body positive drawings of various girls each of which will have a period showing every girl gets it, you just can't tell when they're on it from sight. Another point I loved about the book is that it includes real life quotes and sharing stories/experience about being on your period too making people more aware than virtually any situation has occurred before it's not a worry or unique to happen this book overall is a big relieving hand book for every young girl to have or read! Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them! |
This is a clear and inclusive guide to periods that is perfect for any girl! The language is easy to understand, and the visuals cute enough to demystify a topic that can feel awkward. |
When life for the entire universe and planet turns on its end and like everyone else you "have nothing to do" while your place of work is closed and you are in #COVID19 #socialisolation, superspeed readers like me can read 250+ pages/hour, so yes, I have read the book … and many more today. (I AM BORED!!) I requested and received a temporary digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review. From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸. This frank, funny guide to getting your period gives preteens all they need to master—and even celebrate!—menstruation. Getting your period for the first time can be mortifying, weird, and messy—and asking questions about it can feel even worse. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This taboo-free guide is packed with honest advice and big-sisterly wisdom on all the things girls need to know: from what cramps feel like to whether you can feel blood coming out, to what you should do if your pad leaks onto your clothes. Welcome to Your Period includes case studies, first-person accounts, questions from real teens, and answers from health journalist Yumi Stynes and adolescent health specialist Melissa Kang, MD. Cheerful illustrations keep the tone fun and help with how-tos on different period supplies. There are even suggestions for throwing a first-period party. With its inclusive, body-positive message, pocket-size, and reassuring vibe, this must-have menstruation manual will make girls feel not only normal but proud. WHERE WAS THIS BOOK WHEN I STARTED MY PERIOD? (Well, I was nine!) My mom was too embarrassed to tell me about it and figured that she had a couple of years to prep me (my older-by-four-years sister had not started. This book would have helped so much! (It was the days of non-stick-to-your-underwear pads with a belt ... and the mantra that tampons were only for non-virgins ... oh, how things have changed.- they even have eco-friendly re-usable pads ... oh, I would not want to launder those ... and underpants that are removing the pad from the equation!) The book is well written and would appeal to young women with its tone and presentation. I do wish that there had been more about "problem periods" - I had dysmenorrhea from day one - I am still plagued by PCOS and endometriosis 44 years later. (Oh, I could probably have afforded my dream trip to Antarctica with all the monies I spent supplies over the years!!) Please buy this book for all your daughters/granddaughters/nieces/etc. and this should be in every classroom (that way the teacher can be there for their student should the girl start their period at school) ditto school and public libraries and community resource centres. As always, I try to find a reason to not rate with stars as I love emojis (outside of their incessant use by "🙏-ed Social Influencer Millennials/#BachelorNation survivors/Tik-Tok and YouTube Millionaires/etc. " on Instagram and Twitter... Get a real job, people!) so let's give it (because you should not be embarrassed to talk about your period.) 🙊🙊🙊🙊🙊 |
