The artwork is good, though I found myself feeling like it either should be in color or needed more contrast. The style was often gray fading into white and losing detail. Very wispy and "dusty". Made it a bit annoying to read on a screen. That effect may be lessened if you're reading a physical copy. Story felt like it started off a bit hopscotched, which isn't unusual for stories based on a show or film. I wish it had been a stronger start. Made it hard for me to care about the characters or world because I didn't really get the chance to form any connections. Good for what it was, but I won't be picking up the second volume.

The art in this book was so RWBY and yet so fresh. It's very accessible for readers who are new to RWBY and yet fans will love!

In 2013, Rooster Teeth released a new series from the mind of the late Monty Oum called RWBY. It is the story of four strong girls who are training to become Huntresses; humanity’s only hoped of defeating the shadowy and threatening creatures known as Grimm. For seven seasons, team RWBY went through a lot of twists and turns that left fans in awe with suspense. Now, Viz Media is bringing the story of RWBY in manga form with RWBY – The Official Manga Vol. 1.

RWBY – The Official Manga Vol. 1 is not a variation of the story, but rather a one-to-one retelling for the animated series in manga form. You get to meet the main characters of the story again from the base level. Meet Ruby Rose. She is the youngest student attending the school of Beacon. Ruby wants to become a huntress to try to protect everyone. Being the new kid on the block, she meets her teammates and BFFs for life, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and her sister, Yang Xiao. With the main cast all set, RWBY – The Official Manga Vol.1 takes you through the beginning trials of team RWBY’s path of becoming Huntresses. If you are familiar with the series, Vol. 1 does not throw anything new at you. It is exactly how you remember the first season of the show. For new fans, the book does an excellent job guiding the story at a comfortable pace. There is a lot of action immediately introduced to a modern reader that engages you sparring any dull moments. I also have to admit; there are some scenes in RWBY vol.1 that I am glad to experience all over again. Seeing the gang fighting against the Grimm was fun to see. Volume 1 gives a less complicated RWBY world from where they currently are in the series today.

The best thing I took from reading RWBY – The Official Manga Vol 1. is its art style. Bunta Kinami makes the series her own by introducing her creative style of the world of Remnant. I adore her blend of dark ink colors and light white touches she puts in each panel. I am impressed with Bunta Kinami’s character designs of team RWBY and the other supporting characters themselves. They are marvelous to look at, and I cannot wait to see even more in its future.
Overall, RWBY The Official Manga Vol 1. is a fun series to read. With the fantastic pencils, Bunta Kinami provides, it gives the reader a fresh look on a retelling of the story. Being reasonably familiar with the RWBY series, the story did not quite catch me the second go-around in the manga format. However, Fans who are introduced to these characters for the first time will have a great time reading this inaugural volume of the series.

As a fan of the anime, I wanted this Manga right away and it did not disappoint. It wasn't exactly the plot of the show so you get some new additions and changes, but it was a great story with characters you already love.

I just could not seem to get gripped by the story. It has taken me several months to complete even the first chapter. The concept is in my preferred genre of folk tale fiction, but the art and writing just don't move me to pick it up again and again.

This will be more geared towards people who already love the show, which I thought it followed very well. I think overall the art style is the strongest aspect of this series, super promising start to the collection!

This was really fun and as someone who only watched the show prior, I enjoyed it greatly for diving into some elements a lot more. I have since read all available volumes so far.

This volume of RWBY is actually a new release of the original. That being said, it is a very cute introduction to her world and school for fighting monsters. The cover of this new addition has added some nice foiling and, here I could be wrong, feels like the book is a little wider/bigger in size. Not added pages but that the pages are larger, which is always a plus in manga!

Eh. I wasn't into this manga very much and didn't recommend or vote for it for Mavericks List for Texas. I found it kind of boring honestly.

I would read more, hard to form an opinion on the first volume. The art is intriguing and I like the plot.

Action packed! Great art! Cute moments and even a few funny ones. I've never seen the anime and now I really want to change that!

Will go live on my blog: 10/28/20

Loved this manga! I have waited a long time to finally start reading this series. Got right into it right away. Continued the series immediately after this. I now own all of this series. Thank you!

Thank you, Netgalley, for a complimentary copy of this manga in exchange for my honest review.

Unfortunately, this one was not for me at all! I was really excited to read this one and I really, really wanted to like it. The story itself is fantastic and so were the characters. However, the illustrations were super confusing. Most of the time, I didn't know what character was talking or fighting, who they were fighting, and what was going on. I have read a number of mangas, but this one does not rank among the list of my favorites. I'm sad about that! The idea was great, the implementation was not!

I received an e-arc of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I've been following RWBY since the beginning and was excited to experience it in a new format. Overall, the Manga seemed to follow the initial story line pretty closely and really brought back my joy from watching it. It's an interesting concept and I absolutely love the characters.

Because this does follow the show so closely it is a bit hard to completely separate it and judge it solely on the Manga but I did enjoy the art style and the story line. I found myself often smiling because of the characters and their interactions with each other. This is definitely a Manga series I would enjoy owning and keeping up on.

If you haven't seen the show but enjoyed the Manga or if you enjoyed show and are interested in trying Manga this is a great one.

This was an interesting read. I have never seen the anime, so this was interesting to get into. I enjoyed the characters and the action.

This is a retelling of the first few episodes of RWBY. Volume one covers the first 8 episodes up to when Team RWBY is officially formed. This fills in a lot if you thought the show was missing some details. The art is beautiful.

Ive always wanted to get into RWBY and saw this and thought well, why not?? The artwork is gorgeous enough.
Sigh, my biggest irk is when I’m thrown right in the middle of characters who have been introduced to one another but haven’t been introduced to ME if that makes sense lol. I honestly had no clue what was going on half the time so I’ll cut my losses and watch the anime first lmao.

Thanks for this ARC.

I had not heard of the anime before reading this, but I'll definitely look for it now. This was an action-packed story of young people training to become Huntresses and Hunters who fight the Grimm, monsters that threaten the people of Remnant. This first volume takes us through the students arriving at Beacon Academy and getting settled in, then on to the initiation the next day. After the initiation, the students get placed in teams, depending on their performances in the initiation. There is a ton of action sequences here, monsters getting fought, teamwork happening, trust being gained, all that jazz. It was a wild ride, and the artwork really lived up to the action, making the scenes feel like you were there with the characters. While we haven't got to know the characters very well yet, we can see the friendships forming, and see the start of character growth. I'm curious to see how the story plays out, and will keep an eye out for the next volume.

While the cover and the premise mad this manga seem like something I would be very into, something about it just didn't quite click with me. I didn't feel close to any of the characters, the plot was only so-so for me as well.

I will say, however, that the plot might get more interesting for me if I were to continue reading the series since I find it to have that potential. As for the characters, I suppose I could get closer to them as well if I were to "spend more time with them" so to speak.

There are typically 3 things that I look to that could hold my attention when it comes to a book (or movies and TV shows even): a good plot (something that holds my attention, lots of action, or lots of romance), beautiful writing, or intriguing characters. If I don't get at least one of these aspects, it's difficult for me to push through, or continue the series (if it is a series).

So, I may continue reading the RWBY series, or I might not. But I did also want to say that even though this manga wasn't for me, there were a lot of elements that other readers would definitely enjoy!
